we defiantly have enough food on earth to feed everyone if everything was allocated correctly. This could be done without over consuming our resources. However, greed and completion has taken over the world; leading to “Developing countries” and poverty.

    2. that no oneanywhere feels properly represented by their government, no matter which style of government itis. Dystopia is surely one expression of that feeling of detachment and helplessnes

This can cohere with Young’s definition of oppression with using the face of Powerlessness. Often we feel trapped in our society due to the feeling of being unheard by our government. Representation is imperative but to put your trust in one person to with hold your grievances and hope they speak for you is ridiculous. For instance I feel that the popular vote should be used to dictate who is our president; not the electoral college.

    3. portray the feeling of the present for young people today, heightened byexaggeration to a kind of dream or nightmare. To the extent this is typical, dystopias can be thoughtof as a kind of surrealism.

I can defiantly understand the view point of hunger games now. The constant feeling of pressure and anxiety is exactly how this generation of teenagers and young adults in their 20’s feel

    4. Together thetwo views combine and pop into a vision of History, extending magically into the future

For instance, The Handsmaids tale having a society where the patriarchy of men have taken over. Women have now became property and objects again with little to no freedom. This could foreshadow the Roe vs. Wade overturning which dictates a women’s choice on what she can do with her body.

    5. Possibly dystopiashope to kill the societies they depic

This definitely makes sense due to the ending of all dystopian societies resulting in a revolution and the demise of the society.

    6. There are a lot of dystopias around these days, and this makes sense, because we have a lot of fears about the future.

There is a lot of fears that are present in the uncertainty of the direction our future will head in. Therefore, its interesting to see the more contemporary dystopian movies and novels that are coming out.

    1. To achieve this, it is at once too much and too little that the prisoner should be constantly observed by an inspector: too little, for what matters is that he knows himself to be observed; too much, because he has no need in fact of being so. In view of this, Bentham laid down the principle that power should be visible and unverifiable. Visible: the inmate will constantly have before his eyes the tall outline of the central tower from which he is spied upon. Unverifiable: the inmate must never know whether he is being looked at at any one moment; but he must be sure that he may always be so.

The constant sate of living like this is in my option a type of oppression. Not only are you creating powerlessness amogst these individuals , you’re also creating a constant state of anxiety and uncertainty of what could happen at any given moment. All they know is that they are being watched and must full under some order in fear of what could happen.

    2. Behind the disciplinary mechanisms can be read the haunting memory of “contagions”, of the plague, of rebellions, crimes, vagabondage, desertions, people who appear and disappear, live and die in disorder.

This reminds me of the Giver, how they wiped away the bad memories that were caused by the aspects of society and its structure. additionally, this could connect to the ideology of deterrence in sociology. This is where the higher authority or class gets to determine what is deviant and who can commit deviance. It’s almost as if the plague allowed their government to be in full control to get rid of” deviant acts”.

    3. A whole literary fiction of the festival grew up around the plague: suspended laws, lifted prohibitions, the frenzy of passing time, bodies mingling together without respect, individuals unmasked, abandoning their statutory identity and the figure under which they had been recognized, allowing a quite different truth to appear.

This reminds me of the pandemic we experienced. How it was a “choice” to wear a mask and to social distance. Even though millions of people were dying, people were still defying these regulations.

    4. This enclosed, segmented space, observed at every point, in which the individuals are inserted in a fixed place, in which the slightest movements are supervised, in which all events are recorded,

I’ve noticed that heavy surveillance like this is commonly used in dystopian society. Maybe it’s because we’ve place a huge value on privacy.

    1. Laws of Nature, whereof I shall speak more particularly in the two followingchapters.

This short reading justifies the question of is violence, war, and struggle part of human kind? To call this the laws of nature suggests that. However, the wording of this article makes me agree with how human nature is naturally raw.

    2. For everyman looketh that his companion should value him at the same rate he sets uponhimself

Jealousy would not exist if man were to look upon the greatness that lies in himself and that lies in others the same way. You are as great as YOU are.

    3. And the invaderagain is in the like danger of another

This to me means that taking another mans property or place leaves room for others to take that exact property or place for the same reason. The invaders also have enemy’s that have envy.

    4. And therefore, if any two men desire the same thing which nevertheless theycannot both enjoy, they become enemies; and, in the way to their end, which isprincipally their own conservation and sometimes their delectation only, endeavour to destroy or subdue one another.

This sentence singlely sums up the concept of war. The envy and greed that man possess only allows room for retaliation. This reminds me of how Marx suggested evil exist only due to jealously created by material things.

    1. I gave this phenomenon thename of 'the narcissism of minor differences', a name which does not do much to explain it.

I believe that it is human nature to categorize each other which ultimately causes groups and the constant aggressive mindset of “them vs. us”. It the thought of outsiders destroying the love within the primary group. The constant insecurities that each group have about themselves which leads to both groups making little problems huge problems which results in feuds and war.

    2. reveals man as a savage beast to whom consideration towardshis own kind is something alien

This is true because man has gave us multiple examples that shows that we have little empathy towards our own kind. For instance, the idea of total war, mass genocides, slavery, murder rates, and the amount of violence we are conditioned to see on social media (filming killing of death).

    3. 'Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself.

This saying is always misinterpreted by the majority. This saying does not mean sacrifice your happiness, emotions, property, or desires for a person. This saying is to instill kindness in everyone. To go out into the world and treat people with kindness without a second thought. We can not fix people but we can fix ourselves. Sometimes this kindness can be easily planted in someone else and soon it spreads like wildfire. Kindness to each other is ultimately what God wanted for human kind in order to create a peaceful world in his image. We do not love strangers, however, we can show empathy and compassion.

    4. His constant association with men, and his dependence on hisrelations with mem, even estrange him from his duties as a husband and father.

By looking at women as objects and limiting them to a role of taking care of her kids forces one to see the world in this way. This is only an excuse for man to neglect his duties as a husband and father. If love is within the family and is imperative like he says, one wouldn’t neglect these duties at home. In stead it should be the opposite way around.

    5. Detaching himself from hisfamily becomes a task that faces every young person, and society often helps him in the solution of it bymeans of puberty and initiation rites. We get the impression that these are difficulties which ar

I understand his viewpoint on civilization when it comes to the formation of secondary groups in society. In order for this to happen one must “leave the nest” and navigate their own lives in order to fit in with civilization and continue their own family.

    6. What is the use of reducing infantile mortalitywhen it is precisely that reduction which imposes the greatest restraint on us in the begetting ofchildren, so that, taken all round, we nevertheless rear no more children than in the days before thereign of hygiene, while at the same time we have created difficult conditions for our sexual life inmarriage, and have probably worked against the beneficial effects of natural selection? And, finally, what good to us is a long life if it is difficult and barren of joys, and if it is so full of misery that we canonly welcome death as a deliverer

Human innovation has its positives and its negatives. It has its positives when human mortality is taken into consideration over nature. This allowed us to improve various aspects of our life where we’ve learned to make a norm. However, we were fine before? Why are we not content with human innovations that have already occurred? Because these innovations have been priced and put in a “supply and demand” category where if one does not have one then that is their natural selection( homelessness).

    1. Thus the mystery of capitalism arises: when everyone is formally free, how can there be class domination?

Class domination happens when a society is built on capitalism. People have to constantly need money in order to obtain necessities. The only way to do that is to work. Therefore those who own factories and companies exploit the labor of lower class individuals do to there need of money and the rich needing production to make money.

    2. an internal organization of self-perception concerning one's relationship to social categories, that also incorporates views of the self perceivedto_ be held by other

So the definition of identity is associating ones self with a social group or category in order to define individualism? Ex: I am a female What makes me a female? A female has feminine attributes Do I have feminine attributes? Yes Therfore I identify as female.

    3. What definesBlack Americans as a social group is not primarily their skin color; some persons whose skin coior is fairly light, for example, identify themselves as Black.

I think what defines Black Americans is not by skin color but but the common experiences we all have as black people IN America. When black people get together and talk about how we were raised, we all have similar stories and experiences that have been passed down from generations. For instance, as a child my mother always told me “Be home before the street light turn on” its not to merely keep me safe from what lurks in the darkness but, what happens to BLACK people after dark. This concept stems from the concept of sundown towns were black people who were caught out after the sun is down would be hunted and hung.

Sharing these experiences aids in the idea of identifying as a Black man or women in America.

    4. Social groups of this sort are not simplycollections of people, for they are more fundamentally intertwined with theidentities of the people described as belonging to them.

I just learned about this topic in sociology. The concept of a group is when multiple individuals who have the same desires, goals, and culture come together. There are in-groups: where an individual is excepted by the majority and is socially accepted. There are out-groups: where an individual does not “fit” in due to social influence, class,or race. These two components of the formation of a group, including what is socially accepted by the majority, ultimately leads to structural institutions that purposely create out-groups to benefit from something.

    5. adopting a general mode of analyzing andevaluating social structures and practices which is incommensurate with thelanguage of liberal individualism that dominates political discourse in t

I do not think because autonomy is valued in politics today that it contradicts the ability to question social constructs. I believe it gives us the ability to re-evaluate and rehabilitate certain institutions that cause structural oppression to these groups. Americas foundation was built on oppression of other individuals and has weaved in these injustices into our constitution, laws, and system. Therefore, questioning the structure of our society that we ultimately make delicious in is exercising or purpose freedom to autonomy.

    6. Someone who does not see a pane of glass does not know that he does not see d.Someone who, being placed differently, does see it does not know the other doesnot see it.

I completely understand the meaning of this specific quote in regards to inequality and discrimination. Those who haven’t experienced discrimination “don’t see the glass”, therefore, not seeing the systematic flaws. They probably actually benefit from it. In sociology this phenomenon is called “the veil”. Meanwhile, when put into a different perspective (race or social classes) one can see the flaws and is aware there is a flaw. The problem lies within getting the person who does not see “glass” to see it from our perspective.
