In chapter 18, a huge hurricane hits the Everglades. At first Tea Cake does not think the storm is dangerous, but it becomes deadly. Janie and Tea Cake try to escape the flooding waters, and during the escape, Tea Cake saves Janie from a rabid dog but also gets bitten in the process.

As more workers return, jealousy grows between Janie and Tea Cake, and he hits her to show control. Which the town oddly admires. Mrs. Turner continues trying to separate them but Tea Cake stands against her. Tensions rise and a big fight breaks out in her restaurant, destroying the place and Mrs. Turner decides to leave the muck.

After the season ends, Janie and Tea Cake stay on the muck. Janie meets Mrs. Turner who looks down on black people and disapproves of Janie’s Marriage to Tea Cake. Tea Cake becomes angry about this, but Janie stays loyal to him. Janie and Tea Cake continue to enjoy their life.

Janie becomes jealous when a girl named Nunkie flirts with Tea Cake. She finds them alone together and assumes something is going on, leading to a heated argument and fight. After, tea cake reassures her that he doesn’t love Nunkie, and their relationship becomes closer again.

Janie and Tea Cake move to the Everglades where eveything is big and full of life. They work picking beans, hunt together and enjoy a fun equal relationship. Many workers come and the area becomes lively with music, gambling, and community. Janie chooses to work beside Tea Cake, and she feels happier and freer than she ever did before.

In chapter 13, Janie goes to Jacksonville and marries Tea Cake. He takes her money and disappears, making her feel he left her, but he returns and explains he spent it on a party. Later, he gambles, gets hurt in a fight, but wins the money back. Janie forgives him and they decide to move to the Everglades.

People in Eatonville gossip about Janie and joe, especially because Joe is controlling. Janie starts to quietly question her marriage and shows small signs of standing up for herself.

Tea Cake is giving her control. This probably makes her feelings stronger because she is free and in control.

Janie meets tea cake and she is drawn to him. He treats her like how she has always wanted to be treated.

This shows Janie’s inner freedom and new beginning while also being at the funeral and not showing happiness.

She is free from joes control. She feels relieved, she is able to be herself and express herself how she wants.

Janie is standing up for herself and is embarrassing joe in public. This shows she was fed up with him and how he was treating her.

Janie is getting her voice taken from her by joe, he is becoming controlling.
