In chapter 18, a huge hurricane hits the Everglades. At first Tea Cake does not think the storm is dangerous, but it becomes deadly. Janie and Tea Cake try to escape the flooding waters, and during the escape, Tea Cake saves Janie from a rabid dog but also gets bitten in the process.

In chapter 13, Janie goes to Jacksonville and marries Tea Cake. He takes her money and disappears, making her feel he left her, but he returns and explains he spent it on a party. Later, he gambles, gets hurt in a fight, but wins the money back. Janie forgives him and they decide to move to the Everglades.
