A woman named Nunkie flirts heavily with Tea Cake while they are working. Janie becomes jealous and confronts him. After arguing and wrestling playfully, they make up and grow even closer emotionally.

Tea Cake sometimes feels insecure because Janie is wealthier and admired by other men. To show control, he beats Janie lightly, which sadly earns approval from some people around them. Despite this, Janie still deeply loves Tea Cake.

A huge hurricane strikes the Everglades. Janie and Tea Cake try to escape the dangerous flooding. During the chaos, Tea Cake saves Janie from a rabid dog but gets bitten in the process. Many people die in the storm.

Tea Cake becomes sick from rabies after the dog bite. He grows paranoid and dangerous as the disease worsens. When he tries to shoot Janie, she is forced to shoot him first in self-defense. Tea Cake dies, and Janie is heartbroken but knows she acted to save herself.

They move to Jacksonville, where Janie experiences a joyful, equal relationship. However, Tea Cake briefly disappears with Janie’s money, making her worry—but he returns, explaining himself and showing his love. Despite the scare, Janie trusts him and feels happier than ever in their relationship.
