    1. alternate reality games (ARGs) can be used as an immersive learning system that combines rich narrative, digital technology, and real-world game play.

ARGs are a wonderful tool to really help students build their intuition and analytical abilities. They are more than just a cool marketing tool, and often are a good source for “Unfiction” stories.

    2. He feels that Civilization holds a unique value in letting students experiment with “what if ” scenarios to see how changing variables like political structures or social policies affect and alter the course of a nation

This is a good way to go about this, actually.

    3. Commercial games were repurposed and modified to support curricular goals, as opposed to driving them.

Minecraft is a good example of this, both as the game itself and its repurposed educational edition.

    1. In addition, we believe educators should develop ways to create participatory cultures around aspects of the academic experience

      Usher in discord, twitter, etc.

    2. “Which is worse: apathy or ignorance?”

Both are bad in their own ways and often feed on each other, but it also cannot be helped when there is such an explosion of information coming at us at all times, often leaning one way or the other.

    1. With the advent of low-cost digital production tools and online platforms for sharing media, we have seen an explosion in the growth and visibility of youth creative production, including varied formats such as podcasts, YouTube videos, blogs, tweets, memes, fan fiction, and game mods.

A lot of these things have created their own industries especially. Self-created media still is not always getting the recognition it deserves compared to “official” productions from Hollywood or anywhere else, but there is so much out there made by individuals with an idea that it makes stuff like the Oscars feel like Hollywood huffing their own fumes while stuff like “Local 58” causing me to lose sleep.

    2. Not all forms of participatory politics are tied to a deeply felt interest; signing an online petition or liking a cause of Facebook are expressions of civic agency and potentially impactful (Earl, 2013Earl, J. (2013). Spreading the word or shaping the conversation: “Prosumption” in protest website. In P. G. Coy (Ed.), Research in social movements, conflicts and change (pp. 3–38). Bradford, UK: Emerald Group Publishing. [Crossref], [Google Scholar]), though not necessarily tied to a personal interest, social bond, or affinity network.

Ive signed a few things like that out of a “civic agency” or personal responsibility before.

    3. school math and everyday math turn out to be quite different sorts of things

School math and everyday math in America can be summed up with “they wont let you get away with this in college” and then immediately finding out that, yes, they do in fact let you get away with that.

    4. It turns out that the ability to connect learning across settings rests on a host of other contextual factors, social relationships, and mediating practices

In my experience, at least with learning digital programs for stuff like video or 3D, there is a lot that can be transferred in terms of what can be “learned”, but there is definitely the struggle of learning new “contexts” and where everything is, what resources are available, etc.

    5. 1. by constructing hybrid narratives, young people mine their cultural contexts and products for civic and political themes relevant to issues of public concern;

This occurs a lot with many popular medias. People often push or “dig” for underlying themes in the things they love or have a high interest in (likely something built from our formal education and being asked “what did the author mean by the curtains were blue”).

    6. Through participatory politics, young people use digital tools and other emerging forms of social connectivity to express voice and influence on issues of public concern

“Participatory politics” has been something I’ve seen for years, often in occasions that feel hollow or “grandstand-ish” for the purpose of acquiring “clout” or employing a “my side vs your side” tribalistic mentality. This isn’t always the case, many occasions are good and put pressure on corporations and other bodies of power to let them know that people do not want X thing.

    7. young people to engage with peers in a range of ways

True, but this wide range of opportunities also present their own challenges as everyone needs to take advantage of them.

    1. t is also clear that there are learning processes that involve the creation of activity contexts in a new setting or the pursuit of learning resources that are found outside the primary learning setting.

Of course, some of the best ways to learn is just go out and make the thing!

    2. Luis worked tirelessly to position, shoot, and edit his movies. He added his own sound effects and music, sometimes using the clubhouse sound studio. Once the shots were assembled in the Digital Blue software, Luis added edits and special effects to enhance the narrative.

I wish I had access to these kinds of things earlier in my life. While I had access to a white plastic macbook as my daily driver from elementary (I think) to high school, I had no idea stuff like this was possible. This is also due to my schools never having anything close to a computer club or anything like a sound studio. I didn't even get into anything creative until my senior year of high school.

    3. He also was able to generate design process ideas from examples in mass media, such as when he picked up the ideas of developing concept art (drawings to guide digital look and feel) and storyboarding from a special feature in a video game

This was also my exposure to the world of concept art and storyboarding, which I now am looking into as a possible side/career path

    4. Recent research has shown that despite the emerging cultural image of the average youth as constantly connected and technologically savvy, those who can actually create digital media or interactive environments are in the minority
