    1. At first I had trouble getting into this book but I listened to it on the last couple of chapters and it makes me want to listen to it in its entirety. It's very interesting the way Satan is portrayed and the different view from which it is being told.

    2. Husbands will [ 195 ] Thine shall submit, hee over thee shall rule.

So is he saying that because you proved that you couldn't handle being his equal because of the mistake or sin you committed so now you just need to do what your husband tells you to do

    3. Was shee thy God, that her thou didst obey

Basically saying that I told you to do one thing and you decided to listen to her instead of do what I told you to do. This is what women tell their men in today's time when they decide to hang out with the fellows instead of coming home like they had been instructed to do.... lol

    4. that thou art naked, who Hath told thee?

God knew once he said they were naked that something was wrong because they should not be aware of their nakedness. From my religion God knows all so he knew what was going on so he asked to see if they would lie?

    1. So dear I love him, that with him all deaths I could endure, without him live no life.

This is a beautiful sentence. I love it. I might include this in my vows... okay I am stretching it but it is still very beautiful. Like she confesses true love for her husband. She can do anything with him by her side.

    2. Experience, next to thee I owe, Best guide; not following thee, I had remaind In ignorance, thou op’nst Wisdoms way, And giv’st access, though secret she retire. [ 810 ] And I perhaps am secret; Heav’n is high,

Wow.... interesting statement.... saying that Eve would give Satan credit for opening her eyes. I mean that is what I et from these lines

    3. Why then was this forbid? Why but to awe, Why but to keep ye low and ignorant

And this would be a good question if you were to question God.... why put a tree in the garden that they could not eat from, nor touch. I wonder if this was what Eve was wondering before Satan appeared. If so it could have been the reason why she was so easily tempted

    4. Find place or refuge; and the more I see Pleasures about me, so much more I feel [ 120 ] Torment within me

This is a really interesting line.... the more beautiful his surroundings or the happier people are around him the more hatred builds within.... thats a personal battle and that battle I feel lives in raciest everyday. I don't know what made me out those two together

    1. The place wherein God hath set an husband; namely, to be an head (Eph 5:23); the authority which he hath given unto him, to be a Lord (1 Peter 3:6), do all require obedience of a wife.

This is true but only if that man is of God and is leading the right way. So like the part above say that if a man be drunk and do evil then the wife still should follow him. So does this mean that a wife is free from damnation if she is following the wayward ways of her husband. He assumes all the blame?

    2. Surely she must. For the evil quality and disposition of his heart and life, doth not deprive a man of that civil honour which God hath given unto him.

I tend to disagree with this statement and think the Bible would disagree as well

    3. Though the man be as the head, yet is the woman as the heart

This line speaks volumes because to me it is a man's place to lead the family and it is the woman's place to provide love not saying that the man shouldn't give love but normally women love way harder than men. My mother use to say find you a man that loves you more than you love him and you will forever be happy.

    4. For the Lord hath made vs

I believe God made us in His image and that is why it is crazy to read the dude's account about women in the beginning. Like he makes women seem like some terrible creation.

    5. A fair woman commonly will go like a Peacock, and her husband must go like a woodcock.

Oh wow.... now that is super funny. Someone really did a number on this dude. I almost feel bad for him but I did say almost

    6. women whose beauty has brought their husbands into great poverty

So okay I get it now some pretty woman got him for all his money and land and left him heart-broken because she decided another man was better worth her time. He is real salty!!!!

    7. she quickly procured man’s fall. And therefore ever since they are and have been a woe unto man

Does this man not realize that he came from a woman? He was her down fall. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

    8. women are crooked by nature,

So by this..... God created an imperfect being and from what I have been taught is that God doesn't make any mistakes and all His creations are perfect and beautiful

    9. she helps to spend and consume that which man painfully gets.

This dude is crazy.... I can't read two lines without thinking what the heck is wrong with this cat...... little dummy

    10. This first Chapter shows to what use Women were made; it also shows that most of them degenerate from the use they were framed unto by leading a proud, lazy, and idle life, to the great hindrance of their poor Husbands.

This is already starting off wrong

    1. But say I could repent and could obtaine By Act of Grace my former state

But whose to say that he couldn't repent and ask God for forgiveness. God forgives all but that a good question....did Satan feel like he had done to much to go back?

    2. To wreck on innocent frail man his loss Of that first Battel, and his flight to Hell

So is this the reason Satan did what he did.....he wanted Man to feel loss as he did when he was kicked out of Heaven?

    3. excellent form and happy state

So, I am wondering while reading this if they had not committed the sin and ate the apple what would this world be. Would I still be here? Would we all be in excellent and happy states all the time.... meaning no depression, no sadness, no anger, no disease, no cancer, no crime, no rape and no murder. That's amazing tom think about!!!!

    4. Satans first sight of Adam and Eve

So, I have always been told that Adam and Eve were naked but did not know it because they were pure. So, I am wondering when Satan first saw them..... did he know that they were naked or was he just as naive about their state as they were prior to eating the forbidden fruit?

    1. I am not sure how I feel about this selection but my faith won't allow me to get into it. I feel as though this is an over exaggerated battle between good and evil. It's definitely not like the other selection we just read about Adam and Eve. I just don't know about his one.

    2. At once with joy and fear his heart rebounds.

This is a powerful sentence to me...... it's not being used in the sense of love or relationships but if it were it would be right on point

    3. :

Didn't we just read this story. I love the Lord but they didn't have anything else to write about. But, I guess it makes sense because the clergy were the ones that could read and write. Where are all the stories like Beowulf with killings or the funny stuff????

    1. So will I, Signior Gremio: but a word, I pray. Though the nature of our quarrel yet never brooked parle, know now, upon advice, it toucheth us both,—that we may yet again have access to our fair mistress, and be happy rivals in Bianca’s love,—to labour and effect one thing specially.

LOL..... huddle up.... lets come up with a game plan to get the sister married. We can come back to our fight later.... right now we need to fight together..... oh boy this is funny

    2. ?

They really don't like the poor sister... I am starting to feel bad that no one wants to marry her.... and I am lowkey wondering what she looks like. Cause ugly+bad attitude+smart mouth+tomboy does not equal wife. IJS

    3. And call him ‘madam,’ do him obeisance. Tell him from me—as he will win my love,—

What??? So they are going to act like this man is a lady and expect him to believe it or are they going to trick him into believing that he is gay to see if he will run with it. I am so confused why someone would think this is a good idea

    4. O monstrous beast! how like a swine he lies! Grim death, how foul and loathsome is thine image! Sirs, I will practise on this drunken man. What think you, if he were convey’d to bed, Wrapp’d in sweet clothes, rings put upon his fingers, A most delicious banquet by his bed, And brave attendants near him when he wakes, Would not the beggar then forget himself?

This is going to be like the movie Trading Places with Eddie Murphy. He was a criminal and some rich man played a trick on him to see if he could lend in their world and them in his. This is what this is sounding like so far

    1. A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted

This is beautiful and just makes me think that we all are beautiful just the way we are.... you were born beautiful and we are all made different because no two hand pained are quite the same

    2. Where wasteful Time debateth with decay To change your day of youth to sullied night,

I see this sentence to mean not to waste precious time. Do waste time be mean and hateful or doing what you don't find enjoyable. Enjoy your life while you can cause the lights eventually go out and you don't want regrets to follow you to your grave.

    3. Despite of wrinkles this thy golden time. But if thou live, remember’d not to be, Die single and thine image dies with thee.

To me this is saying enjoy your older years and be happy you made it that far. Don't be bitter and mean-spirited that your not young anymore because no one will want to be around you and you will just exist and die alone and no one will miss you and there will be no memories to live on.

    4. Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament

This statement to me is piggybacking off the previous line in stating that everyday you can start fresh..... like reinvent yourself and show your freshest spirit and your newest self

    5. Thy self thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel

This line says a lot because to me its saying that your enemy will always talk bad about you and try to keep you down but that's to be expected. But why do you do those same things to yourself. Why are you so mean and unpleasant to yourself. We are our own worst critics

    1. they have almost the same taste which Cheese has.

What in the world!!!!!!!!!!! Why is she eating maggots and cheese. What kind of snack is that???? It's supposed to be cheese and crackers

    2. .

I mean how long was this conversation. I mean she talked their ears off... I mean if they had any.... I bet they were like.... lady shut up and go walk on some gold or something. This land is beautiful and there are all kinds of things for you to enjoy but you asking all these questions. Like hold your horses.

    3. inform me how Wind is made

So is their air and wind different from what she was raised in.... like these questions are crazy to me. She is human right and she lived on earth long enough to understand the wind, air, sun and moon. What they have couldn't be that different and what they are explaining sounds the exact same as hers should have been. So I am super confused at this point

    4. Emperor

He made her his wife but how did she feel about that? What kind of creature was he and did she think he was cute? I feel like they left out some details in this story..... or am I the only one who cares...lol

    5. Bear-men, some Worm-men, some Fish- or Mear-men, otherwise called Syrens; some Bird-men, some Fly-men, some Ant-men, some Geese-men, some Spider-men, some Lice-men, some Fox-men, some Ape-men, some Jack daw-men, some Magpie-men, some Parrot-men, some Satyrs, some Gyants, and many more

ummmmmmmm I am not sure how I feel about these creatures.... I mean Lice-men.... now they are going to far

    6. the young Lady onely, by the light of her Beauty, the heat of her Youth, and Protection of the Gods, remaining alive

Women are made to survive. We are built to withstand all trails and tribulations. We are so strong and powerful.

    7. execute his design

I picture this evil villain rubbing his hands together and laughing this evil laugh and stoking his v-shaped beard while coming up with his evil plan.... lol... like from a cartoon or something

    1. This was a cool read mainly because I had never thought of Eve in that light. Its true that she should not have all the blame because Adam knew what would come too if he ate of that fruit. He had his own mind and he knew the rules just like she did. But he was supposed to be the leader and he failed at that. He should have remained strong and held his position as the man and said no but then again a woman is hard to say no to.

    2. who forgetting they were borne of women, nourished of women, and that if it were not by the means of women, they would be quite extinguished out of the world: and a finall ende of them all

You better say that..... women are the reason it all exists. If not for us the world would be doomed

    3. Though I on earth doe liue unfortunate, Yet there I may attaine a better state.

This sounds like going to Heaven. Like the saying goes those that are first will be last and those that are last will be first. So if you do whats right and be a good person you may live poor on earth but you will be rewarded in Heaven

    4. Comfort to them that haue no time to liue.

This line is striking to me. Like is it referring to people that are on their death beds? Or does it refer to people who are just existing and not living life to the fullest?

    1. When I saw this title I was excited thinking that I was about to read about women with power. Like women that were having their way with men and running things like being a real boss. And the first story is about the Queen getting her head cut off. I never figured out why she was put to death. What did she do so wrong? It seemed as if everyone loved her so I am just thinking that she couldn't have been that bad. But at this point I will never know I guess. The rest of the poems and stories I just couldn't get into. maybe because of the first one. I mean I was in shock that they killed a lady like that but I mean that's what was going on back then. The language was okay but this was lengthy and not interesting enough for me.

    2. .

Now that the way you open up a prayer. It almost brought tears to my eyes. You can just feel the pain she is in but it also makes me wonder is she just saying these things because she is in jail. You know people get that jailhouse religion.

    3. the quarrel is God’s, and undoubtedly the victory is ours.

This statement is so powerful to me. Let God fight your battle and trust in Him and you will always be victorious.

    1. I had to go back and read this story a second time. First, I am trying to see what happened to the baby. Like did she kill the baby or did it die? It's interesting because we all battle with the good and the evil. She knew or she felt like the reason that nothing was going right for her was because she had turned her back on God. It's crazy to think that someone could change so abruptly. But in the same breath it's commendable. She had to be really strong to face all the criticisms and her husband acts against her to maintain her faith. This story to me just says that anything worth having is working working for.

    2. And when they came up onto the Mount of Calvary she fell down that she might not stand nor kneel but wallowed and wrested with her body, spreading her arms abroad, and cried with a loud voice as though her heart should ‘a burst asunder, for in the city of her soul she saw verily and freshly how our Lord was crucified.

      What a vision!!!!!

    3. Granteth me that ye shall not come in my bed, and I grant you to quit your debts ere I go to Jerusalem.

So he will give up all rights to his wife's body to have his debts paid. How much does he owe????? And then on the other hand or another way that this is coming to my mind is she saying I will pay you to stop raping me

    4. Ye are no good wife.”

So what a minute.... they are married so why can't they sleep together. And instead of doing what most married couples do she would have her husband be killed. This is crazy to me and he is still married to this woman or creature. And why do they keep referring to this woman as a creature. Is it a woman or a being?

    5. she said that her pride was cause of all her punishing and she would amend that she had trespassed with good will.

If it were only that simple to right your wrongs; life would be so easy.

    1. Sir Launcelot

Some people just don't listen..... like he should've just thought about what Sir Bors was saying. Why would he say this? Where was this feeling coming from? Like did Sir Launcelot even wonder if there was any truth to what this man was saying or did he even care.

    2. Sir Launcelot had done so much for him and the queen so many times, that wit ye well the king loved him passingly well.

It's always funny to me how the King will say that the knight has be loyal and done so much for me but no king ever says.... I know my queen and she wouldn't do something like that. Is the weight of truth solely based on how the knight treated the king? Like does the wife loyalty ever come into play or because they were in arranged marriages the king knew it could be a possibility that the wife would look at another man?

    1. A warrior will sooner 2890 Die than live a life of shame.”

This makes me think of the shorthand Shakespeare quote.... A coward dies a thousand times but a soldier dies but once.

    2. They watched Wiglaf, sitting worn out, A comrade shoulder to shoulder with his lord, Trying in vain to bring him round with water. Much as he wanted to, there was no way He could preserve his lord’s life on earth

I could just see this image so vividly. He is desperately trying his hardest to keep Beowulf alive and his efforts are in vain. It's really sad.

    3. Beowulf shared with him once his own had shattered

Once again Beowulf was selfless. He didn't know whether he would make it out alive or not but he did not let that stop him from protecting the young warrior that came to assist him.

    4. “I remember that time when the mead was flowing, How we pledged loyalty to our lord in the hall, Promised our ring-giver we would be worth our price, Make good the gift of the war-gear, Those swords and helmets, as and when His need required it. He picked us out From the army deliberately, honored us and judged us Fit for this action, made me these lavish gifts– 2640 And all because he considered us the best Of his arms-bearing thanes.

Beowulf was a good person. His loyalty and his word carried a lot of weight. He did what he said he would do and many respected him for that. Beowulf earned respect and Wiglaf could not see leaving him to die in battle knowing that he could have helped save his life. This to me speaks volumes about Beowulf's character

    5. Then he addressed each dear companion One final time, those fighters in their helmets, Resolute and high-born: “I would rather not Use a weapon if I knew another way To grapple with the dragon and make good my boast 2520 As I did against Grendel in days gone by.

It's amusing to me how Beowulf is bragging about killing/fighting Grendel with his bare hands. He is preparing to go to battle with this dragon and he is not sure that he will win this one. Is he trying really trying to remind himself of who he is so that he is less nervous going into battle?

    6. For the last time: “I risked my life Often when I was young. Now I am old, But as king of this people I shall pursue this fight For the glory of winning

Beowulf realizes that he is old and may not b as good in battle as he use to be but for his people he is willing to risk it all for the good of his people.

    7. The one who had started all this strife And was now added as a thirteenth to their number.

So he added the slave to his band of warriors? If so that is cool.... basically saying that if you start something you must finish it. Its like real time punishment. You're going to fight the dragon that you stole from and if you live through this hopefully you won't make the same bad choice again.

    8. It was desperation on the part of a slave

He stole out of desperation not greed. In today's time it still happens this way and though I don't agree with the actions of some criminals I totally understand. Sometimes you do the wrong things for what you feel are the right reasons.

    1. I enjoyed this story because it shows that no matter what history you have with someone; there is always a chance to change the future. Beowulf didn't worry about the problems the two groups had in the past. He saw an opportunity to help and did just that. This story also shows that some people will always something negative to say even when your intentions are noble and good. These people you have to look past and continue on with your journey so that you can be blessed. This story reminds us to put a Higher Being first in everything that you do and you will be rewarded. Also reminds us that no matter how good or great you are stay humble and that fame and power will last forever.

    2. And took no advantage: never cut down A comrade who was drunk, kept his temper 2180 And, warrior that he was, watched and controlled His God-sent strength and his outstanding Natural powers.

He didn't put himself above anyone. He was an all-around good and humble man.

    3. The Danes could not burn the dead body Nor lay the remains of the man they loved On his funeral pyre. She had fled with the corpse And taken refuge beneath torrents on the mountain.

It was hard to move on because without the funeral there was no real closure. It's kind of like what happens today with people who come up missing and are never found. It is hard for the family to move forward because there the body is missing and can not be laid to rest.

    4. Heremod was different, The way he behaved to Ecgwala’s sons. 1710 His rise in the world brought little joy To the Danish people, only death and destruction. He vented his rage on people he caroused with, Killed his own comrades, a pariah king Who cut himself off from his own kind, Even though God Almighty had made him Eminent and powerful and marked him from the start For a happy life. But a change happened, He grew bloodthirsty, gave no more rings To honor the Danes. He suffered in the end 1720 For having plagued his people for so long: His life lost happiness. So learn from this And understand true values. I who tell you Have wintered into wisdom.

I think that it is awesome for the King to share this story with Beowulf because he is trying to prevent him from becoming big-headed. To me he saying that the Lord gave you this strength to help the helpless and not to abuse what God has blessed you with. and to remain humble. This is the message throughout the entire story to thank God for his magnificence and in everything out Him first and recognize His role in what you have accomplished. If people did this in today's time there would be a lot less looking down on your fellow brother and people would look to help people instead of destroy them.

    5. They stretched their beloved lord in his boat, Laid out by the mast, amidships, The great ring-giver. Far-fetched treasures Were piled upon him, and precious gear. I never heard before of a ship so well furbished With battle tackle, bladed weapons And coats of mail. The massed treasure 40 Was loaded on top of him: it would travel far On out into the ocean’s sway.

This is a great image to me. I can see this ship with a corpse all decked out with gold, glitter, crowns, pearls and diamonds. All of this material stuff piled on top of this dead kings body and set to sail but in my mind I think they set it on fire and let it burn on the water.

    6. A queen should weave peace, not punish the innocent With loss of life for imagined insults. But Hemming’s kinsman put a halt to her ways

From this statement it seems as if she is a liar. She makes up these stories about people looking at her or disrespecting her to have them killed but the kinsman caught her in her lies and put a stop to her foolishness.

    7. Great Queen Modthryth Perpetrated terrible wrongs. If any retainer ever made bold To look her in the face, if an eye not her lord’s Stared at her directly during daylight, The outcome was sealed: he was bound In hand-tightened shackles, racked, tortured Until doom was announced–death by the sword, Slash of blade, blood gush and death qualms

This is amazing to me that you couldn't look at her face without the fear of being slaughtered. Women with status have been looked at in high regard and protected since what seems like the beginning of time. And funny enough it's still that way now..... women who respect themselves command respect from others but especially men.
