Recruiting Settlers to Carolina, 1666
This document was published 3 years after colony of Carolina was established. The Carolina colony was established March 24, 1963.
-
Therefore all Artificers, as Carpenters, Wheelrights, Joiners, Coopers, Bricklayers, Smiths, or diligent Husbandmen and Laborers, that are willing to advance their fortunes, and live in a most pleasant healthful and fruitful Country, where Artificers are of high esteem, and used with all Civility and Courtesy imaginable…
The new colony offers a higher quality of life; those with labor skills can come to work in the colony and make more money and have a more advantageous life than in England while being highly respected and revered.
-
Such as are here tormented with much care how to get worth to gain a Livelihood, or that with their labor can hardly get a comfortable subsistence, shall do well to go to this place, where any man whatever, that is but willing to take moderate pains, may be assured of a most comfortable subsistence, and be in a way to raise his fortunes far beyond what he could ever hope for in England.
This basically states that if you have unfortunate or rough circumstances in England, you are sure to have a much better chance of being able to sustain yourself and/ or attain wealth, status and land in the new colony. If this is their selling point, I'm interested to know how those with status and wealth in England felt about the possibility of a more level playing field in the new Colony and if the recruitment garnered much interest from them?

Thirdly, Every Free-man and Free-woman that transport themselves and Servants by the 25 of March next, being 1667. shall have for Himself, Wife, Children, and Men-servants, for each 100 Acres of Land for him and his Heirs for ever, and for every Woman-servant and Slave 50 Acres, paying at most 1/2d. per acre, per annum, in lieu of all demands, to the Lords Proprietors:
Slave owners were awarded land based on their ownership of slaves, but slaves were awarded none of their own.
-
If any Maid or single Woman have a desire to go over, they will think themselves in the Golden Age, when Men paid a Dowry for their Wives; for if they be but Civil, and under 50 years of Age, some honest Man or other, will purchase them for their Wives.
John Horne advertised that it would be very likely for a woman who made the trip to be purchased as wife by an honest man as long as they met two requirements; that they were under 50 years old and civil. This particular selling point geared towards unmarried women helps illustrate how important it was for a woman to be married in this time to secure their social, economic and legal status.

Who exactly is Robert Horne? Did he hold an important role within the colony or was he just hired to publish the advertisement?

but the Right Honorable Lords Proprietors
The Right Honorable Lords Proprietors were a group of eight English Nobleman who had been granted the land of Carolina by Charles II as a reward for their support and efforts to help him regain the throne of England.

First, There is full and free Liberty of Conscience granted to all, so that no man is to be molested or called in question for matters of Religious Concern; but every one to be obedient to the Civil Government, worshipping God after their own way.
The promise of "full and free" religious liberty sounds good; however, I have to question how honest this promise of religious freedom is considering that part of the justification for initially traveling to the new world was to religiously influence and convert natives (and advance economically while doing so). Perhaps, some freedom from the dominance of Catholic Spain but not a full and free liberty to "worship God after their own way" as the text suggests.
-
Robert Horne’s wanted to entice English settlers to join the new colony of Carolina. According to Horne, natural bounty, economic opportunity, and religious liberty awaited anyone willing to make the journey. Horne wanted to recruit settlers of every social class, from those “of Genteel blood” to those who would have to sign a contract of indentured servitude.
Robert Horne was recruiting both men and women of various skills, status and backgrounds who were willing to relocate to the new colony in order to help develop/ expand the colony of Carolina with a series of incentives/ promises that included religious freedom, economic advancement and land.
