Ours on the same correct principle, should be adapted to our arms & warfare; and the manual exercise, military maneuvres, and tactics generally, should be the frequent exercises of the students, in their hours of recreation
It is interesting to see that during points of leisure, student were told to do combat and warfare training. I presume at the time being in the military was majorly for the honorable and wealthy families who sent their sons to UVA in the first place, thus they were to be trained in warfare.

To understand his duties to his neighbours, & country, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either.
It is interesting how the University decided that one of its duties was to teach students their personal duty to their country and community. That seems more of something that people learn from their parents and in primary school. Today it is noticeable especially in primary schools with the pledge of allegiance and all, but other than the national anthem prior to sporting events, I don't think this duty is still majorly upheld for students other than those in ROTC.

The Commissioners for the University of Virginia having met, as by law required at the tavern in Rockfish gap on the blue ridge
What seems odd to me is that when the Idea of the University was established, it was birthed in a tavern. I don't know why, but in my opinion I feel like a tavern wasn't the proper place for legislators to talk about the building of a State University. Of all things that really makes me wonder what the conversation must have been like when setting the location, not a board room nor an inn, but a tavern. Also I found it interesting that the meeting at this tavern was required by law. It seemed a bit strange to think that they had thought the only way for the commissioners to meet was to make that meeting legally binding. This makes me wonder whether they would have been punished for not showing up, and if so what would the punishment be?

and it’s centrality to the white population of the whole state:
I found that it was interesting that a major factor for the University was the centrality of the University to the white population. Did that mean they surveyed the land and looked at population distribution or did they make it central to white upper-class families or did they just say central college seems legitimate? Thomas Jefferson built Central College for it to be easily accessible for white Virginians who seek higher education. Again, how was centrality brought to a decision, why was the University of Virginia placed where it was, placed closer to some than others?
