    1. Concerns about nuclear weapons proliferation have been one large impediment to creating commercial breeder reactors.

This is likely the main reason other types of reactors, i.e., using other fissile material, haven't been funded and pursued. The Military-Industrial Complex lobbies for this technology over other possible solutions.

    1. If rank-and-file Dems want to get real influence, they should copy a successful Republican device. Ask every Democrat running for office — from the US House and Senate to state legislatures and governorships — to take the following pledge: They must promise that they will not vote for any tax measure that favors the billionaires and big corporations, thereby increasing the income inequality that is already a national scandal. If the Democratic candidates refuse to sign the pledge, put them on the hit list.

      Good advice, good tactic.

    1. Powerful interests, some with huge profits at stake, have tried to undermine America’s scientists for decades

To me, this is the evil that I can't believe people don't see though..

    2. Attacks on science might sound trivial compared to the larger political upheaval happening in America today, but make no mistake: the War on Science is going to affect you, whether you are a scientist or not.

I think this is crucial to understand and the key reason this attack on scientific endeavor and fact-based perspectives is ruinous.

    1. "This administration has raised the level of ethics training and oversight to a new level compared to the practices of the previous administration."

Suppositions - sometimes bordering on ludicrous - without supporting evidence is this administration's real strong point.

    2. “When people hear concerns about democracies declining into authoritarianism, they expect that moment to come in a singular thunderclap where everyone can see that this is the time,” said Ian Bassin, who’s leading the new group. “In reality, often times, democracies decline over a period of years that happen through a series of much smaller steps.”

This subtlety is the real danger, especially when people cling to their political beliefs unquestioningly.

    1. Inside the meeting, Democrats complained about the closed-door policy.“I've never been in a meeting where an agency can designate who can attend,” said Pelosi, according to an aide.

Changes to government openness policies are running roughshod over transparency.

    1. “Careful news organizations don’t just throw unverified leaks into the world,”

While this may be true, it seems like an awful responsibility to have to perform extreme vetting on such leaks, with a lot of pressure on less careful news organizations to be less responsible.

    2. The breadth of the leaks has surprised — and, of course, delighted — journalists, who say it gives the public an unfiltered view of what those in power are thinking and doing.

Am I just being a cynical old man, or does the substitution of unofficial, unvetted leaks for the real thing seem like a step toward "alternate truths"?

While the current leaks are often accompanied by copies of allegedly official draft documents, beginning to rely on this channel for insights into our government seems like an opportunity for those who would purvey alternate truths a forum on which to spread disinformation.

    1. The smaller waste product is about three times more radioactive than the original, which makes a five-pound bucket of it about a third as radioactive as a typical home smoke detector, says Burnett.

While technically radioactive, the level of radiation is relatively low.

    2. Along with the radioactive elements of uranium and radium, the phosphogypsum also contains trace amounts of arsenic, cadmium and other heavy metals, Reese says.

Contains these poisons, but only in trace amounts.

    1. It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America. This is your day. This is your celebration. And this, the United States of America, is your country.

A call to get engaged. I don't think this is anything more than a dog whistle, presonally, but we need to take him at face value and GET IN THE GAME.
