      I disagree with this simplistic portrayal of "guide on the side" and the "sage" -- students can and must have opportunities to choose, to lead, to follow their curiosities and connections to 'shared knowledge' without abandoning the path/curriculum.

      I think Hirsch should also stipulate that charter schools are not necessarily 'the' way forward. The implication is the opposite.

      This is a justification for IRW, where a shared text and the sustained and shared reading of, talking about, and writing about (testing ideas to other experience), and sharing this in a group can elevate the 'ratcheting' ...

How this effects "reading" instruction?
