    1. Reddit posts from last year point to an injury flare-up after the account holder went surfing.

The surfing injury is another point these news media outlets have continued to talk about.

    2. the high-achieving young man from a prominent Baltimore family had led what many would consider a charmed life, finishing as valedictorian at an elite Maryland high school and traveling the world after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania.

The idea of him being a high-achieving person comes up regularly. This would add to the shock value of him murdering a CEO.

    3. After his disappearance, Luigi Mangione re-emerged as the suspect in a high-profile killing. Those who knew him are dazed.

There is a consistent theme of people being shocked that Mangione would kill someone.

    1. By contrast, Mangione lasted all of five days on the lam, and appears not to have redistributed any of UnitedHealthcare’s revenues. In other ways, though, he comfortably fits into Meyer’s taxonomy of the antihero.

This article attempts to make a connection between Mangione and the idea of the anti-hero. Which, I believe, accurately describes how many people feel about the murder.

    2. Last week, Internet citizens were making dark, cathartic jokes about the fatal shooting, on December 4th, in Manhattan, of Brian Thompson, the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare, which is the insurance arm of the world’s largest health-care company.

This article highlights the internet/social media's response to the murder which not many other articles about the murder have done from what I have found so far.

    1. In his valedictorian speech, Mangione lauded his classmates for “coming up with new ideas and challenging the world,” citing successful fundraisers and accomplishments in sports and academics. “To the class of 2016, a kind of class that only comes around once every 50 years, it’s been an incredible journey, and I simply can’t imagine the last few years with any other group of guys,” he said.

This article really drives the point of how accomplished Mangione was. This tells me that the narrative that this article is going for is that "He had everything. Why did he decide to throw it all away?"

    2. The 26-year-old scion of a wealthy Baltimore family who was a high school valedictorian and an Ivy League graduate

The language used here sets up the idea that Mr. Mangione was very respectable person.

    3. He publicly kept track of nearly 300 books he had read or wanted to read, even posting a favorable review of the Unabomber manifesto on a book website.

What about the other 299 books? Surely there was another book that was just as important as the Unabomber manifesto

    1. Police report a darker turn

This feels like the most important part of the article. It talks about information that could lead to a potential motive for the killing.

    2. Mangione took a software programming internship after high school at Maryland-based video game studio Firaxis, where he fixed bugs on the hit strategy game Civilization 6, according to a LinkedIn profile. Firaxis’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, said it would not comment on former employees.

I fail to see how this is relevant to the discussion. I feel like his software programming internship doesn’t explain why he ended up "killing" Brian Thompson.

    3. Luigi Mangione’s hard turn from wealth and success to murder suspect

This article, much like their article on Brian Thompson, talks about the personal life Luigi Mangione.

    1. What do we know about Mangione?

This article doesn't feel like it is pushing an agenda. It feels like it is just providing evidence about Mangione and what people could gather about him.

    2. Key details about the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO

So far, this title lives up to the information presented in the article.

    1. UnitedHealthcare CEO kept a low public profile. Then he was shot to death in New York

I feel that this title is a little misleading. This leads me to believe that we will get more details about the day he died.

    2. What happened? UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson died in a dawn ambush Wednesday as he walked to the company’s annual investor conference in New York.Who was Brian Thompson? He was the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare and kept a relatively low profile.Who was the shooter? Officials say the shooter, who is still at large, appeared to be a man who was wearing a black face mask and black and white sneakers.

These are the only facts the article covers about the assassination.

    3. Thompson, who lived in a Minneapolis suburb and was the married father of two sons in high school, was set to speak at an investor meeting in a midtown New York hotel. He was on his own and about to enter the building when he was shot in the back by a masked assailant who fled on foot before pedaling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away, the New York Police Department said.

This whole article feels like it is more so about the life of Brain Thompson rather than facts about his assassination

    1. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote.

Due to the sample and how everything was weighed, this survey was probably a random survey.

    2. This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,175 U.S. adults interviewed between Feb. 5-7, 2025.

This CBS Survey was done through YouGov. This is meaningful because they were able to gather a large survey size of 2175. They were able to accurately represent the opinions of most of the US.

    1. Democratic-backed Susan Crawford wins Wisconsin Supreme Court seat, cementing liberal majority

The metaphor in this article is Susan Crawford winning Wisconsin Supreme Court seat. This entails that there was a competition for the seat and someone else lost.

    1. Trump is pressing the nuclear option on tariffs

The metaphor at play hear is Trump "pressing" the nuclear option. The entailment present in this metaphor is that Trump is going for the more extreme option when it comes to tariffs.
