    1. Steven Tweedie. This disturbing image of a Chinese worker with close to 100 iPhones reveals how App Store rankings can be manipulated. February 2015. URL: https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-shows-how-fake-app-store-rankings-are-made-2015-2 (visited on 2024-03-07).

I was surprised to learn that even app store rankings can be manipulated. The picture shows groups of people using hundreds of phones to download and interact with apps just to push them up the charts. While this tactic may work, it is unfair to normal users because the ranking no longer shows the real quality of an app. It makes me look at the “trending charts” more carefully and reminds me that online data is not always trustworthy.

    1. Bots might have significant limits on how helpful they are, such as tech support bots you might have had frustrating experiences with on various websites.

I believe that this statement is true. These days, I often see websites using chatbots to answer users’ questions, but most of the time, I find them frustrating to use. The bots usually don’t understand what I’m really asking, and their answers feel canned and stiff. They also rarely solve my problem quickly. I often end up repeating myself again and again, and in the end, I still have to wait for a real agent to respond. Even though these bots are meant to help, when they don’t work well, they just make me more impatient. This also makes me realize how important it is that technology should always be designed with the user in mind.

    1. Why did so many people see it?

I think so many people retweeted it because once one person retweeted it, it just exploded on Twitter. At the beginning, only a few will see it, but once someone retweets it or posts a comment, the tweet gets shared with a lot more people, and so on and so forth. It’s an exponential chain reaction once people begin to see a tweet. I also think time is important, because if I post it in the morning, for example, a lot more people are likely to see it.

    1. But just because we use an ethics framework to look at a situation doesn’t mean that we will come out with a morally good conclusion.

I agree with this statement. To be honest, I have always seen ethical frameworks as a tool in people’s lives. This can be a very useful tool. However, it can also be used unethically. For example, almost all social media platforms only show the content that the majority of people like to the public. Therefore, we only see what these companies want us to see in our daily feeds. However, some want their content to be seen more often because it really can help people. However, if they are not included in the “interesting” feed, they will be lost and no longer publicly available. So even if the product was created in an ethical framework and is really good and useful, it may not always turn out the way we want. Moreover, since everyone can see these frameworks, they will be implemented differently and have different results. Therefore, we cannot consider it a universal tool and always expect to have the “correct” answers from it. For me, it is more important to learn to hear different points of view on a situation and then be able to make a good decision.
