Yes! All throughout college, you are taught to teach and connect diversity with your students. You need to incorporate all cultures so it's more beneficial for students learning.

    2. t the beginning of the year, Jessica had her students write an autobiography of themselves. T

We actually had to do this for another education class and it ended up being very successful.

    3. ome saw it as understandable that these high school students dropped out because they had so few opportunities and because the school seemed to tell them that they were not worth much.

This is terrible, of course students are going to drop out if teachers are discouraging and not respecting them. That's not what teachers are for, they are suppose to encourage their students to do their best and to succeed. If there's a student not understanding something, they should be trying to help them out in every way possible!

    4. hey compared Seward Park High, the school in the book, and its prob lems with their own high school experi ence, and they saw Jessica Siegel as the kind of teacher they would like to become. Many of the students were amazed at how different this school was from the one they had attended.

These students are getting a whole other outlook to something they never thought about!

    1. They decided on a letter writing campaign to the highest level of the gov- ernment, the president:

I think this is a wonderful idea for this class. I remember back in elementary school where my teachers would make us write letters to the president, etc. but they never actually sent the letters out. But, in cases like this, it really increases their literacy skills.

    2. "This kinda reminds me of my dad and my sister, he always teases her and likes to [play] these weird teasing games too, like this Daddy."

This is a really good connection that this student made. It's especially important that this student is making connections when reading because it means that they are fully understanding the context and what's going on throughout the story.

    3. This conversation concerned me, because fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs, are often used to teach across the curriculum,

They are often taught to teach across the curriculum, but there's some teachers out there that don't teach it well. Therefore, students don't have have the take-away that they should have from it.

    4. "There ain't no Little Red in my hood, and if I catch one of 'dem little piggies, I'm gon' have a Bar-B-Que.

This student needs to be exposed more to literacy books that were fairy tale based. I believe if he's exposed more than he won't end up having the same conclusion as he does now.

    1. "Literary fantasy" is an umbrella term given to books with fantastic elements that apply graceful style, symbolic lan guage, complex characters, ethereal settings, alliterative in jokes, meta-references, or non-linear timelines (to name just a few devices)

I like this line and how literary fantasy is an umbrella, it makes me relate this back to the phonological awareness umbrella!

    2. s one of fiction's largest and fastest growing genres.

I think it's one of the largest and fastest growing genres because students love it and when they are reading this genre they are so engaged in it whereas, in some other genres they aren't so much.

    3. The richness of this genre world offers readers great new frontiers to explore,

Yes! Students need to learn about the fantasy genre, it will open up their horizons and their imagination!

I love the idea that teachers should first read and teach students about mythology and incorporating it into their curriculum. Teachers are making it a part of their lessons and I think that's really important that students are learning about myths. It really opens up their eyes!

    2. Most individuals know little about mythology. The

I strongly believe mythology is something that isn't talked about too much in classrooms, I feel like teachers usually skip right over it.

    3. The first is a cultural mythology that includes an indi- vidual's exposure to such concepts as religion, politics, and community beliefs. The second is a personal myth- ology that each person experiences through dreams, symbols, rituals, imagination, and self-impressions of the world he or she li

It's very important to tie these two common forms of mythology into your classroom because students need to integrate their culture and beliefs into their classroom. Having students share experiences through their dreams, imaginations, etcetera is also very important because it brings diversity into the classroom and brings the classroom environment that much better where students are more comfortable. Students and teachers don't know enough how important it is to students learning.

    4. ools. When one considers that the myths people live by directly affect their behavior, the topic becomes immensely impor

I do believe this statement is true and is something that needs to be discussed more often.

    1. The Lesson:

As you read all of the different stories and lessons each one of these books gives you, you notice that each one has such a different lesson. Fables are great to have in the classroom!

    2. Some of these fables may teach different lessons to different people,

I never thought about it this way, usually the lesson I get out of stories are the lessons I would expect others to get out of them as well. But, I never thought about it that way where people find different lessons overall.

    3. These fables are more than children's stories.

This is so true, fables are more than just stories that teach you so many lessons depending upon the story you read.

    1. o matter what our personal feelings about po etry are, as teachers we must endeavor to teach po etry to our students.

This is very important because whether or not a teacher likes poetry, they should be teaching it to their kids no matter what. I believe the teachers that don't like poetry just don't teach it at all and the ones that do like it, teach it. But, what you teach shouldn't depend on your personal feelings

    2. I got my students to love writing poems.

It's definitely possible to change your students minds about poetry. As long as you are teaching them correctly then they could easily change their minds to loving poetry.

    3. ven worse, I can remember being asked to write in the style of that poet. I also recall that I failed miserably in my at tempts to mimic the poet's rhymed meter. T

This is why so many people don't like to read poetry or to write it because of their experience they had in school. Teachers don't give students enough freedom when it comes to poetry, they do want you to write exactly how that poet wrote. When I was in high school I hated poetry for that specific reason because we had to write in the way the poet did. Even though there's a lot of ways that poetry can be written..

    4. What is it about teaching poetry that teach ers find so threatening?

Poetry isn't taught enough in schools and it's a different type of literature that students at young ages should definitely be aware of. Teachers could add poetry into so many different lessons but many of them just don't teach poetry at all.

She had been an uninterested reader and was transformed into an enthusiastic one. She began to request copies of books featuring girls in Afghanist

    2. "This change in our classroom libraries will also allow children of the dominant culture to see literature about others who look different and live differently."

Teachers should be providing such a variety of books to children. Students want to learn from one another and I definitely believe teachers should have more books on culture in their classroom.

    3. "The literacy needs of half the children in the United States were neglected." I definitely feel this is such a powerful statement. The most important thing being a teacher is helping the students succeed in every way possible. The fact that CC neglected half the children's literacy needs is crucial. Every students literacy needs should be met and succeeded in every way possible.
