Different subjects define history all tied connections. These subjects can provide a better understanding of why history was like that during that time frame.

    2. Unfortunately, most readers first encounter history in schoolbooks, andthese omit the explanations and interpretations-the detective work, if youwill. Textbooks, by their nature, seek to summarize knowledge. They havelittle space for looking at how that knowledge was gained.

It takes knowledge and research to know more able history. Including using textbooks.

    3. I bet there's sixty or seventy-and allwithin a couple inches. Those came when the place was still forest. Then, you notice, the rings start getting fatter all of a sudden. That's when my dadcleared behind the house-in '22-and the tree started getting a lot more

The practicing historians that went on the event asked the feller how he knows how old the rings are, and he explains how in this line.

According to other present time some of us are caught up to current history whether it is World War one or the great migration. We all have a current knowledge of how times were back then. It can be 2 million years ago when cavemen first exist, which is referred to Homosapiens.

    6. his book began as an attempt to bring more life to the reading and learning of history. As practicing historians, we have been troubled by a growing disinterest in or even animosity toward the study of the past. How is itthat when we and other historians have found so much that excites curiosity, other people find history irrelevant and boring? Perhaps, we thought,if lay readers and students understood better how historians go about theirwork-how they examine evidence, how they pose questions,

The word historians reflect to how people go about history. Based on the evidence they provide and how they answer certain questions.

    1. Finally, when you go to a university, you are in a sense going to another country, one with adifferent culture and different values. I have come to realize that the biggest gap between youand me is a cultural difference. I

The professor refers to a transition of going to college as "going to a new country".

    2. If you want to know the biggest difference between you and your professor, it is probably this:You see university as a place where you get a credential. For your professor, a university is notprimarily about credentialing. Your professor still harbors the traditional view that universitiesare about education. If your aim is to get a credential, then for you courses will be obstacles inyour path. For your professor, a course is an opportunity for you to make your world richer andyourself stronger.More:Higher Education Higher Education Reform Millennials Academia

Students should see college as a credential honestly. Especially if they want a rich future ahead of them.

    3. We old-fashioned chalk-and-talk professors are told that we need tostop being the "sage on the stage," but should become the "guide on the side,"

All professors will give you a break down or a walkthrough of the assignment, but it is up to you to go home and study.

    4. our teachers were held responsible if you failed, and expected to show that they had tried hardto avoid that dreaded result. I am not held responsible for your failures. On the contrary, I getpaid the same whether you get an "F" or an "A." My dean will not call me in and ask how manyconferences I had with your parents about your progress. Indeed, since you are now an adult, providing such information to your parents would be an illegal breach of privacy. Neither will Ihave to document how often I offered you tutoring or extra credit assignments. I have noobligation whatsoever to make sure that you pass or make any particular grade at all.Secondly, universities are ancient and tend to do things the old-fashioned way. In high schoolyour education was basically a test-preparation service. Your teachers were not allowed to teach,

The professor will not be held accountable if you pass or fil its up to that student progress. In my opinion this is my first year in college and it is best that students check in with their professor during office hours. Two- or three-times meeting with your professor throughout the semester will be great enough.

    5. First, I am your professor, not your teacher. There is a difference. Up to now your instruction hasbeen in the hands of teachers, and a teacher's job is to make sure that you learn. Teachers areevaluated on the basis of learning outcomes, generally as measured by standardized tests. If youdon't learn, then your teacher is blamed. However, things are very different for a universityprofessor. It is no part of my job to make you learn. At university, learning is your job -- andyours alone. My job is to lead you to the fountain of knowledge.

The professor explains the difference between a teacher and a professor. The professor explains that in a college course it is your job to learn. In high school it is the teacher job to teach you.

    6. For the first time in many years I am teaching a freshman course, Introduction to Philosophy. The experience has been mostly good. I had been told that my freshman students would beapathetic, incurious, inattentive, unresponsive and frequently absent, and that they would exudean insufferable sense of entitlement. I am happy to say that this characterization was not true ofmost students. Still, some students are often absent, and others, even when present, are distractedor disengaged. Some have had to be cautioned that class is not their social hour and othersreminded not to send text messages in class. I have had to tell these students that, unlike highschool, they will not be sent to detention if they are found in the hall without a pass, and that theyare free to leave if they are not interested. Actually, I doubt that the differences between highschool and university have ever been adequately explai

The professor is convinced that most students compare to high school are no that interested. Some students would be distracted by their phones. Most are just mainly absent or not concerned that class is not in their social hour.
