I think that this source is interesting because the number of fake and spam accounts become an important part of a huge business deal. It let me realize that data on social media is not just numbers, because the way a company collects and reports its data can affect very important decisions. I also think that different people can use the same data to support very different arguments.

    1. Can you think of an example of pernicious ignorance in social media interaction? What’s something that we might often prefer to overlook when deciding what is important?

I think one example of pernicious ignorance can happen when people make jokes on social media. Different people may be sensitive to different things, but sometimes we only think about whether a joke is funny and ignore how other people may feel. For example, someone may joke about another person’s accent or appearance in a group chat and think it is harmless. However, that person may actually feel embarrassed or offended.

I found that this source is terrible because it made me think that online harm may not always come from real people. If bots can repeat the same misleading messages many times, one person could feel like a huge group of people is attacking them, even if many of those accounts are not real. I think this can make online harm spread much faster and feel more serious.

    1. On the other hand, some bots are made with the intention of harming, countering, or deceiving others. For example, people use bots to spam advertisements at people. You can use bots as a way of buying fake followers [c9], or making fake crowds that appear to support a cause (called Astroturfing [c10]).

I feel like that hurting other people has always existed, but harm on the internet can sometimes feel even more serious. In real life, people are more limited by laws and rules, but online rules are often harder to enforce, so people may feel more free to attack others and cause greater harm.

    1. How are people’s expectations different for a bot and a “normal” user?

I think that people expect a normal user to share their real thoughts, feelings, and experiences in order to get some feeling feedback. However, a bot is usually expected to to some specific tasks automatically. For example, I would not expect a bot to have real emotions, but I would want it to be faster and more accurate.

    1. How often do you hear phrases like “social media isn’t real life”? How do you think about the relationship between social media and “real life”?

I often hear the idea that “social media isn’t real life.” For example, on Douyin (TikTalk) in China, some people may brag in the comments that they own big houses or expensive cars, even though in real life they are just ordinary workers. Also, as there are more and more people attacking others online, I think that people become less willing to share their real lives on social media.

    1. Being and becoming an exemplary person (e.g., benevolent; sincere; honoring and sacrificing to ancestors; respectful to parents, elders and authorities, taking care of children and the young; generous to family and others). These traits are often performed and achieved through ceremonies and rituals (including sacrificing to ancestors, music, and tea drinking), resulting in a harmonious society.

As a student who grew up in China, I have been influenced by Confucianism since I was very young. However, I think there are both advantages and limitations. I think ideas like respecting parents and treating others with respect are very valuable, but I also think that some complicated traditions and very strict ways of education can sometimes limit people's creativity and make them afraid to make a change or challenge existing ideas.
