    1. gate. Delia and Sykes fought all the time now with no peaceful interludes. They slept and ate in silence. Two or three times Delia had attempted a timid friendliness, but she was repulsed each time. It was plain that the breaches must remain agape

I believe skye is having an affair, and if the sparks not there anymore when why are the holding in ? Neither one of them are happy.

    2. He done beat huh 'nough tuh kill three women, let 'lonechange they looks,

Skye is he doesn’t respect women, he’s not a real man, and Delia doesn’t respect herself either, she doesn’t know he worth.

    3. gum." With all this they left the store, with Sykes reminding Bertha that this was his town and she could have it if she wanted it

He seems to be very conceded and has a really big ego.

    4. ? Yessir, mah wife! She tol' him tuh take 'em right straight back home, cause Delia works so hard ovah dat washtub she reckon everything on de place taste lak sweat an' soapsuds

As one of my peers pointed out skye has a reputation

    5. Ah done tole you time and again to keep them white folks' clothes outa dis house

I already told you* dialect here, she clearly doesn’t really enjoy white ppl clothes in her house.

    1. know you do. That's why I tried to stop you from saying these things about him. It would have been so simple if you could have just despised him for being a weak man. But he's your father. You love him and you're ashamed of him. You're ashamed of so much!

Hally is letting out his frustration in an aggressive way he doesn’t realize that he is pushing those closest to him further away, readers such as my peers also forget to remember the fact that hally is still young and still finding himself, so he probably doesn’t know how to express his emotions outside of anger.

    2. Good. Because what you've been trying to do is meddle in something you know nothing about. All that concerns you here, Sam, is to try and do what you get paid for - keep the place clean and serve the customers.

Hally is finally letting out all of his pain and frustrations and he’s letting them out on sam, not in a positive way but a negative way, causing a dent in there relationship.

    3. Hello, Mom . . . No, everything is okay here. Just doing my homework

Hally continues to pretend everything’s okay even if he’s not okay, maybe if he told his mom how he actually felt he will feel better.

    4. Sam? Just when you're enjoying yourself, someone or something will come along and wreck everything

As I stated before hally is supportive in a brutally honest way. Others may say negative vibes.

    5. You're right. We mustn't despair. Maybe there's some hope for mankind after all. Keep it up, Willie. [

I think hally is finally getting the understand and importance of dance to same and willie. Hally has always been supportive in a rude brutally honest type of way.

    6. There's no collisions out there, Hally. Nobody trips or stumbles or bumps into anybody else. That's what that moment is all about. To be one of those finalists on that dance floor is like . . . like being in a dream about a world in which accidents don't happen.

Hally assumed that dancing was for “simple minded people” however he failed to realize the importance of dance and how important every step is , make no mistakes

    7. Maximum of ten points each for individual style, deportment, rhythm and general appeara

They need 10 points in order to win, according to sam . Same explaining the rules for the contes and how they are being scored.

    8. didn't say it was easy. I said it was simple - like in simple-minded, meaning mentally retarded. You can't exactly say it challenges the intellec

Hally is to smart for his own good, he’s smart however how smart he thinks he is only makes him stupider.

    9. Get back to your work. You too, Sam. [His ruler.] Do you want another one, Willie?

As I previously stated, hally is holding in all of his pain, stress and anger and when bottling up your feeling you eventual explode and direct your frustration on the wrong people.

    10. No! I wait too long and I practice too hard. If I find me new partner, you think I can be ready in two weeks? I ask Madam for my leave now and we practice every day

Willie is in a rock and a hard space, without his dance partner he will have to work 10x harder then before.

    11. Yes, they are! They bloody well deserve what they get.

Hally doesn’t seem like he wants to see his dad. Perhaps he’s not ready to see his father in his condition or maybe he’s just scared, he can also be avoiding reality as well.

    12. Don't misunderstand me, chaps. All I want is for him to get better. And if he was, I'd be the first person to say; "Bring him home." But he's not, and we can't give him the medical care and attention he needs at home. That's what hospitals are there for. [Brusquely.] So don't just stand there! Get on with it!

Hally may be covering up his feelings, with everything going on with his family he might jus be saying this in order to keep his mom less worried and stressed.

    13. I don't like Mohammed. I never have. I was merely being hypothetical. As far as I'm concerned, the Koran is as bad as the Bible. No. Religion is out! I'm not going to waste my time again arguing with you about the existence of God. You know perfectly well I'm an atheist .

Hally feels very strongly about his beliefs, which is why they are playing “tit for tat”. With neither one of them willing to open minded to each others thoughts and opinions.

    14. Gosh], you're impossible. I showed it to you in black and white. SAM: Doesn't mean I got to believe it.

They are both very passionate about there beliefs. Hally also has to think outside of black and white , hally needs too be more open minded.

    15. on't confuse historical significance with greatness. But maybe I'm being a bit prejudiced. Have a look in there and you'll see he's two chapters long.

As my peers pointed out hally and same have different perspectives on the book. There each reading the book from a different stand point and may not be able to see it from each other’s perspective.

    1. doesn't have to be that way. There is something called progress, you know. We don't exactly burn people at the stake anymore.

In lack of better word hally is a young activist, he believes in change, modern day evolution. He believes that times will change and continue to evolve.

    2. Tried to be clever, as usual. Said I was no Leonardo da Vinci and that bad art had to be punished. So, six of the best, and his are bloody good

I can tell that this was around the 1950s or so maybe even later in time either ways it was a long time ago. Schools punishment back than was a lot different from school discipline now.

    3. suppose so. [His mood has changed.] What's on the menu . . . as if I don't know

It seems as I’d hally is not too excited about his father coming home, or maybe he’s having mixed emotions, it’s difficult to tell.

    4. His clothes are a little neglected and untidy: black blazer with school badge, gray flannel trousers in need of an ironing, khaki shirt and tie, black shoes. Sam has fetched a towel for Hally to dry his hair.

Hally is a child that is either neglected or his family doesn’t have a lot of money to get him the latest.

    5. You the cream in my coffee, you the salt in my stew."

I thought they were singing a song at first , however from what Justine has said it’s most likely a figure of speech, kind of a like saying “your the cereal to my milk”.

    6. You hit her too much. One day she going to leave you for good.

Willie beats on his wife/girlfriend, as Ryan said above. Sam is pointing out to wille in his own way that he is mistreating his girlfriend, that’s why she doesn’t show up to dance classes.

    7. now she's making trouble for me with the baby again. Reports me to Child Wellfed, that I'm not giving her money. She lies! Every week I am giving her money for milk. And how do I know is my baby? Only his hair looks like me. She's [messing]around all the time I turn my back. Hilda Samuels is a [bad woman]!

I agree with Daniel A. Wille is clearly a horrible person to claim the mother of his child is a liar, and also he is denying the child is his. Men are trash.

    8. ow can I enjoy myself? Not straight, too stiff and now it's also glide, give it more style, make it smooth . . . Haai! Is hard to remember all those things, Boet Sam.

I agree with Tiffany, Wille seems as if he is younger than sam.

    1. “Because every time I see her I want to tell her I’m sorry your mother is alive, because it reminds me that mine is dead

This justify my previous statement, building off of the envy I was discussing, Claire was feel a bit jealous towards her friends and she know knows how to express it.

    2. So now Claire doesn’t know two things, where her shoes are or who this Aaron is who has a life she knows nothing about.

Claire wants to believe in her mind that she doesn’t know Aaron because of previous situations, between Angela & Aaron. Maybe she just feels a little envious and has a hard time showing it in her own way she’s jealous because she will never get her mother back meanwhile they have had a second chance.

    3. Claire is three? Four? Four drinks in to something bright pink that the host calls panty-dropper punch, one drink for every month her mother has been dead so far.

Not to justify for Claire’s actions but clearly she has not moved on from her mother death, and maybe her way of dealing with it is rebelling.

    4. So a hundred people can send me death threats, but I can’t put a flag in my window.”

Claire clearly doesn’t see that what she did was wrong . I agree with my peers that Claire is very ignorant.

    5. When they kitten-pile into the grass, Claire turns to Angela. It is a love that requires touch, and so Claire snuggles against her, nuzzles into her neck to say it out loud against her. Love love love. Angela is her best friend, her other self. Someday they will go to college together. The world will unravel for them, fall at their feet

Claire and Angela’s relationship seems to be more than just a friendship they may into each other romantically.

    6. change.Claire and Angela forever. By adolescence they have both lucked into beauty, but neither has really noticed yet; there is so little room for interlopers in the tight world of their friendship that they are often each other’s only mirrors

Claire and Angela are very close, they don’t notice that they are simply the same person as the author describes.

    7. Claire, not yet entirely clear on the rules of family,

Claire is not able to understand the rules of family due to lack of having family around her which is why she treats Aaron the way she does.

    8. Claire is fascinated by their accents, and, yes, by the dark tint of their skin,

As said previously Claire rebels in order to get attention. Being around black people made her feel important mostly it gave her the attention she wanted. The writer continues to add details about Clarie to give readers more information about her.

    9. You look like white trash,” Puppy says to her the first time she sees the bikini

The writer wrote this in away for readers to get perspective from all angels.

    10. Jackson presents the bathing suit wadded up in a supermarket plastic bag, the sort of awkward non-gift you give someone in an awkward non-relationship—he bought it for five dollars on a spring break trip, he says, for a girlfriend he subse-quently found blowing one of his friends in their shared motel room and broke up with

This shows that jack and Claire may have a platonic relationship, in which there relationship is more of a close friendship with some intimacy.

    11. They get high and make out in the pool house that afternoon, and the next and the next and the next

Maybe Claire is trying to rebel against her father and step mother to gain attention from him.

    12. Puppy, having no job and, from what Claire gathers, limited ambitions beyond strolling the house in expensive loungewear, is always home to miserably watch her eat it.

Claire most likely believes poppy is a gold digger only with her dad for his money
