    1. "Sport is part of culture and a good way to learn about another country… To discover why people are so passionate about it, it's like, 'Tell me what your sport is and I'll tell you who you are,' " he said.

This is true, a sport in a different country can really show someone the culture and how passionate the people are.

    2. "The fans, they pray for two things. The first is that the Canadiens will win. The second thing is that they pray for the Canadiens to crush the Maple Leafs, but I think you don't need any God for that," he said with a laugh.

I think this is really how some people feel. Especially today when religion has been put on the back burner or is not even part of half of the peoples lives. Its Sad!

    3. The arena is their temple, the players are their saviours, and those who worship them pray that the sacrifices made on the ice — of blood, sweat and tears — will lead them to glory.

This is a great example of how people are actually viewing hockey. Like in the video, Hockey in Quebec is bigger than the church!

    1. The Richard Riot is generally considered the firstexplosion of French-Canadian nationalism,

This is interesting to think this way. It makes sense but with only a small view into the history I would not have drawn that conclusion. I do see how they are after reading and watching video on all of the events.

    2. . On the night of Thursday, March 17, 1955, the haze was aghostly yellowish white. Smoke from a tear-gas canister haddriven thousands of hockey fans into the streets, sparking afour-hour rampage that yielded the requisite fires, shatteredwindows, looted stores, overturned cars and 137 arrests. Sportsriots have become commonplace, but the one in '55 was like noother because one of its central figures, Maurice Richard, waslike no other hockey player.

Thinking on this riot makes me think about the riots that have happened across the country here in the USA. Today we are more equipped but are battling more than the rioters. It appears that in todays age the news media is calling a riot a protest instead of calling it what it is. News anchors that give false information should be charged with inciting a riot as they are promoting the behavior acting as if it is ok.

    1. Authorities feared a sequel to Thursday night’s rampage at Saturday’s game against the Rangers. The police took “emergency measures” in advance to prevent that.

What measures can you take to attempt to control a crowd that has the potential for a riot with that mass amount of people. Even with all officers, reservists and outside agency help its just about containment.

    2. For five minutes, the tempest rages. The crowd, on its feet, cannot believe the madness before them

After watching the video I can not imagine having that much violence in todays hockey.

    1. Sticks were high, fists flew, blood often smeared the ice, and the owners thought this was all manly and a great way to sell tickets.

I can not disagree that this would be a great way to sell tickets. The problem is getting a full season and then getting more players the next year.

    1. Three or four times a day Maria or Telesphore brought them a bucket of water which they stood in a shady spot to keep it cool; and when throats became unbearably dry with heat, exertion and the dust of the hay, they went by turns to swallow great-draughts and deluge wrists or head.

This just makes me appreciate running water and water bottles/coolers.

    2. "Three weeks at least before they can be turned out to pasture."

Being from the country I fully understand this. running low on food for your animals you are desperate for spring to come soon so the pasture grows.

    1. Those who touch me still more are the poor widows and orphans of la Conception, which was the Village commonly named by the Hurons " the Believing Village,"

An honor for the village to be nicknamed that.

    2. also the entire crew, with a captive yroquois. Item, sailed the nostra dame.

This again is another passage as I continue to read that I have no clue what it is saying. I have continued to try and piece together these stories and timelines as French words are used over and over again. I understand that French is the language they are speaking but I speak not one word of French. I get from this that a lot of people were there.

    3. Creature of 15 or 16 years, a thief.

Imagine not giving the youth of today a second chance. Makes you wonder if the criminal justice system back in the day was better than today. I say that somewhat sarcastically but I do not read about a lot of repeat offenders in history books. Also keeps the population down, helps with global warming and overcrowding.

    1. This Council was one of the most important that the Hurons have

This to me is showing how big of a deal this council is. If it is one of the most important things that the Hurons have then I would place it in the top 3. This to me would be comparable to the US Supreme Court or Congress.

    2. everything was so dry and so and that at the least spark of fire the forests and fields were at once in a blaze. Thus it happened that many Savages, going about the country and not being on their guard, had their Cabins and provisions burned, as did also two of our men. But to speak only of the Huron Country,—the drought was very great,

This is a depiction of how "great" the drought was and of how dry the land became. The land became so dry that a great blaze not only burnt the land and houses but also consumed two of their men. "Great" is utilized as a powerful word that we are used to being used for positive but in this text it is to describe a negative.

    3. All come willingly to hear us; all, without exception,

Willingly is used lightly in this instance. It does not appear that all were willing to come hear what was being taught.
