This is precisely why the push to reduce the high cost of textbooks that has been the cornerstone of the OER movement has been a wake-up call for many of us who may not always have understood what we could do to directly impact the affordability of a college degree.
I see university administrators promoting OERs but for various reasons, some faculty won't give up the textbook. I was partnering with faculty to get OERs onto the remedial college writing syllabus, we were so close to OER adoption then our state mandated the elimination of remedial college classes. The remedial students got mainstreamed and I don't know how they did or if they were tracked. Community Colleges seem to adopt OERs at a higher rate than 4-year institutions.
