    1. But we ran our course, we pretended we're okay

Their relationship is described as an course, filled with many challenges obstacles. When a person fails an obstacle they are often hurt in the process which they much shrug off as a little painful but in reality, it hurts, just like how they kept quiet through pain in their relationship

    2. Well, it's eating me up inside

Choice of word of eating shows a negative effect of consuming, as it talks about the anxiety and jealousy that is consuming him inside as he watches his ex with someone else which makes him feel as if she is being taken away

    3. I will go

The word ‘will’ suggests the decision he’s made is final, implying that he will leave her alone for real and finally fulfil his wish of making her happier

    4. When the evening fallsAnd I'm left there with my thoughts

Contrast to the morning, it signals the start of night time, which connotes the start darkness, which may reflect on the speaker’s thoughts. The diction of the word ‘left’ shows the loneliness he is facing

    5. image of you being with someone else

Visual imagery of the significant other with another person creates disgusts and jealousy in the persona, but at the same time, this will cause home to feel depressed as can’t do anything about it

    6. want

Repetition, want is repeated to show the persona’s demanding view of wanting for this to happen, although this may not necessarily be directed to her, but to himself as he knows if he wants her to be happier, he’s the one to take action while it is repeated to remind himself and emphasise how much he wants her to be happier.

    7. I've been thinkingI want you to be happier

‘I’ve been thinking’ shows that the persona had finally made the big decision of making the significant other happier. The diction of ‘you’ shows how the persona is directly pointing at his significant other and how his heart is set on only making them happier. Happier connotes being more joyful. It can be accomplished through love or affection. However, this is not the case as in order to make her happy, he has to leave, showing the contrast

    8. Even though I might not like thisI think that you'll be happier

The persona admits his true feeling about letting each other go. The persona then goes on to doubt whether or not she’ll be happier if he left, but shrugs off that idea as he has come so far, determined to leave to make her happy

    9. I think that we both know the way that this story ends

The speaker foreshadows about how their relationship would undoubtedly end. The word ‘story’ symbolises their relationship, which both may have a start and an end. The different parts of a story can resemble the life in a relationship with someone you love. The ‘introduction’ resembles how they meet, the ‘rising action’ resemble how they have taken things further and started to date, the ‘climax’ can resemble the fights or arguments that start to take place inferred from the previous line. And it carries on until the ‘conclusion’, where they separate. From this, I can reflect on the theme of relationship as how it may only last for a brief moment, and shatter, which can hurt so much so it is hard to let go. I feel proud for the speaker even though he fails repetitively to let go but tries his best to do so

    10. When the morning comesWhen we see what we've become

Morning connotes the start of daytime, where everything can be seen clearly, which suggest why he is able to ‘see what we’ve become’. It can be seen what they have ‘become’ in the next line; a flame in the wind, which indicates vulnerability between their relationship, suggest this is what they’ve become.

    11. I wanna raise your spiritsI want to see you smile butKnow that means I'll have to leave

Word intensity of spirit, as it connotes that of someone’s mood as can change drastically if it is lifted or lowered. There is a juxtaposition between “see you smile” and “I’ll have to leave” as the persona knows he would not be able to see her smile if he was there for her, but at the same time, wouldn’t be able to see her smile if he left, showing that the two contrasting idea cannot be fulfilled together either way The juxtaposition can also suggest how in order to make someone happy, they have different choices of things to do giving love and affection, but in his case, he only one choice, he has to leave.

    12. Then only for a minute

The absolute word of ‘only’ shows how the persona wants a minute to change his mind but isn’t able to as his want for his significant other to be happier would be pointless

    13. In the cold light of day, we're a flame in the windNot the fire that we've begun

From “ In the cold light of day” it suggests that the speaker has come to his senses that someway or another, his relationship did not last and he has to accept it while “we’re the flame in the wind not the fire that we’ve begun” emphasises this. From the metaphor, it tells me how at the start of the relationship, the speaker originally had the notion that nothing could’ve stood between their relationship and it was like ‘fire’, despite the gust of wind blowing, will be unaffected and continues to crackle. However, after their separation and time passes, he soon realises that the ‘fire’ he saw at the start had died down into a (candle) flame. Although being separated but not have an extinguished flame, the flame left signifies that the persona feels that there is still hope for them to reverse their relationship and continue to stay by each other’s side despite knowing it will most likely not happen

    1. I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster

The writer compares her loved ones passing to “losing two cities, lovely ones.” which portrays the intensity of how great her suffering from losing someone is. From the words ‘vaster’ it shows her foreshadowing for more losses to come her way.

    2. so many things seem filled with the intentto be lost

Lit device: word intensity The word ‘seem filled” shows an intense urge of a given entity yearning to be lost. The speaker makes it seem as if it looses itself purposefully rather than it being lost inadvertently. I feel pity for the speaker in the poem for her loss because, even though she is convincing herself that she is able to cope, the truth can still be seen on her face. From this, I can see the theme of loss as to how the speaker reacts to her loved one’s passing.
