I didn't know this. Does anyone know if this segregation was a part of Jim Crow or one that happened naturally? By naturally I mean that certain ethnic groups like to stay together for a sense of community, was this the case in NY?

This reminds me of today's political situation. Lawmakers seem to be doing their jobs, however the executive fails to put it into effect. Loopholes are found within laws and yet again nothing changes. This also reminds me of the emancipation proclamation. A big "change" is proposed to take effect, such as the freeing of slaves, yet nothing actually changes. This seems to be a common theme within the civil rights movement that Black people head.

When we say that Black people are victims of systemic racism, this is what we mean. it goes beyond attitudes or biases. The highlighted text is an example of CONTINUED unfair treatment of Black people that resulted in more harm than can be fixed with a single generation of people.

    1. Thatcher

Im curious to know how the majority of the UK views thatcher/how they viewed her at the time of her term?

    2. The Republican Party needed, however, a solid electoral base ifit was to colonize power effectively. It was around this time thatRepublicans sought an alliance with the Christian righ

This is very interesting. I thought that the republican party has always been alligned with the Christian right merely because they share the same beliefs, and not that it was part of a strategic plan.

    3. Working-class and ethnic-immigrant New York was thrust backinto the shadows, to be ravaged by racism and a crack cocaineepidemic of epic proportions in the 1980s that left many youngpeople either dead, incarcerated, or homeless

I often forget how recent this epidemic was. Since the 90's New York City has made so much progress, only to be disrupted in the last 4 years after the Covid-19 pandemic.

    1. and in someinstances (for example in the US) it is often held to have no mean-ing at all.

I laughed a bit reading this sentence because in the US, class definitely holds meaning. The lower classes are looked down upon, the higher classes are also looked down upon, and the middle class is simply ignored.

    2. here was,she famously declared, ‘no such thing as society, only individualmen and women’

Its fascinating to think about how impactful Thatchers terms was. Britain as we know it today would be completely different without her policies.

    3. The group’s members depicted themselves as ‘liberals’ (inthe traditional European sense)

      What is considered European Liberalism?

    1. Some individuals seek out the right place to be in thefuture. These entrepreneurs, who anticipate changing use valuesfrom place, speculate on the future of particular spots.

How does these investors speculate? what factors do they determine?

    2. Public decisions crucially influence which parcels willhave the highest rents as well as the aggregate rent levels for thewhole region or society.

This reminds me of gentrification. Ultimately, the higher ups choose whether or not a whole foods opens up next to your apartment complex driving up your rent. Higher ups choose whether or not the mom and pop shops stay open or shut down for good. Overpolicing or underpolicing? All these impact the people living in the certain location.

    3. Location establishes a special collective interest among indi-viduals. People who have “bought” into the same neighborhoodshare a quality of public services (garbage pickup, police behav-ior); through these forms of “collective consumption ” (Castells,1983), residents have a common stake in the area’s future. Resi-dents also share the same fate when natural disasters such asfloods and hurricanes threaten and when institutions alter the locallandscape by creating highways, parks, or toxic dumps.

I love the relationship the author adds to being a neighbor. It truly is more than just a location. Not to mention in many areas of NYC location is bound to certain cultures and ethnicities. So on top of sharing all those traits with your neighbor, you may also share the same religion or ethnicity which only deepens the relationship.

    1. hey are going to bemore affected by the dynamics around self-driving carsthan, for example, the UK where the automotive industrycontributes 4% of GD

im curious to see which AI creation will impact a countrys GDP the most. Does anyone know?

    2. Ambitious governments have already started to seemachine learning as the core differentiating technology ofthe twenty first century and a race has alreadycommenced.

While this is great for human progress, when too much power rests in a single nations hands, that can get scary. who knows the types of AI software that will be created. Who knows if a different country can hack our nations database an access every civillians personal information?

    3. Commercial applications of machine learning willcreate vast new businesses and destroy millions ofjobs.

This is extremely sad to realize. computer science majors and other similar majors put countless amount of hours in to studying only to get replace by a computer overnight. What shouldve been a really high paying job is now in an extremely competitive pool, causing many to work at minimum wage jobs.

    1. st-industrial theory, both in its classical and contemporaryversions, does not pay attention to a fundamental feature of our societies:we live in an interdependent, global economy whose internal linkages, particularly in the organization and circulation of capital, have closelyconnected economic systems and cultural traditions across nationalboundaries

This is shocking to realize. If one country's economy in the European Union collapses it will find a way to harm the US economy. Globalization has connected us on a level that can be scary. Now imagine how other countries would be affected if the US economy collapsed.

    2. Post-industrial societies, organizedaround social choices, are more directly political than either agriculturalsocieties (organized around survival in a hostile Nature) or industrialsocieties (organized around processes of economic accumulation).

What are examples of each of these? Curious to see which cities/countries have which type of society.

    3. Technology is not just science and machines: it issocial and organizational technology as well. Technological change impliesthe simultaneous change of productive forces and social relationships

Technology has changed the way humans interact with each other forever. People have become so accustomed to texting and seeing a whole persons life on a screen that theyve forgotten how to have real interactions with people in person.

    1. till, there was no clear sign of progress, and increasingly frustratedstudents and faculty opted for more aggressive tactics.

This reminds me of the current protests occurring on our campus right now. Pro-Palestine protestors who wish for the chancellor to address harmful messages being sent to the community are being ignored despite their large numbers and effort.

    2. On the other hand, the more politically radical teachers sawopen admissions as away to fulfill the deepest promise of an urbanuniversity by including minorities not previously served.

I feel a sense of pride in our school reading this. A college where it was once argued whether or not minorities had the right to attend the institutions now has a majority population of minorities. The politically radical teachers of the time should be applauded for their work.

    1. New York City’s problems are part of a larger trend. In almost all of theolder manufacturing cities,

What other cities in America have experience problems such as New York's Fiscal crisis?

    2. MAC soon proved inadequate

Why was MAC proved inadequate? What about the corporation was a failure? What could have been done differently?

    1. No two groups now dominate in this way. Today New York’s immigrantsinclude sizable numbers of most Asian, West Indian, and Latin Americannationalities and many European groups as well.

Many Americans applaud their European ancestors for making the trip to America, yet look down on the new wave of immigrants. Its hard for me to believe that that mindset has to do with anything but the race of the immigrants. If a European were to immigrate to the US today, they are more likely to be accepted than an Asian immigrant. Its a nuanced idea that cannot be explained in an annotation but just something to note and look for in future interactions.
