    1. I realized writing is a word-by-word, sentence-by-sentence process.

      Writing is a form of song creation. Each and every word is itself its own note. Each word that is used flows continuously into the next, like a note/lyric in a song flows into the next. Writing becomes a form of art; it's like a paint brush flowing on a blank canvas.

We read the sports page to see if our school won the game, Facebook to see who has commented on our status update, a history book to learn about the Vietnam War, and the syllabus to see when the next writing assignment is due.

      Here he is referring to how most of the readers are searching for a specific topic they are looking for, rather than looking for the reasons behind a writing.

      When he comes to this specific moment, he has a moment where he is enlightened by his own thoughts about texts and simple words on a page, and his ability as a writer and reader evolves to the point where he can begin to recognize aspects of his and other writers' writings.

The reading he was doing previously before coming to his realization was for the purpose of entertainment, but not for the sake of critical thinking of the "whys" and "hows".
