Objectives: Develop updated estimates of lives saved and cost-effectiveness measures (cost per life saved, cost per HIHT) for LG programs in Uganda and Kenya using 2021 program monitoring data, forthcoming external evaluation (randomized controlled trial) results, and an external data source such as DHIS2 electronic health records. Review and build on previous methodology and estimates from deterministic models using data from 2019 – June 2020, and the results of our first RCT with IPA on 2010-2013 data from our program in Uganda Update existing analytical decision support tools and potentially structural upgrades of this. We’re looking for multiple Research Engineers to join the Alignment team. Potential focus areas/projects include: Aligning large language models to follow instructions Training models to find flaws in other models’ outputs Exploring ways to efficiently train from human feedback Training models to assist human feedback About the Role As a Research Engineer on the Alignment team, you should be able to: Write performant and clean code for ML training. Independently run and analyze ML experiments to diagnose problems and understand which changes are real improvements. Write clean non-ML code, for example when building interfaces to let workers interact with our models or pipelines for managing human data. Collaborate closely with a small team to balance the need for flexibility and iteration speed in research with the need for stability and reliability in a complex long-lived project. Understand our high-level research roadmap to help plan and prioritize future experiments.

About the Role We’re looking for a full-stack software engineer who will develop tools and prototypes for human-model interaction that can be used by the Alignment team to both carry out existing research and test out new research domains.  In this role, you will potentially: Build flexible infrastructure for assigning human labeling tasks that supports complex workflows such as debate, and implement those workflows Create great UI experiences: for both labeling tasks (e.g. humans giving feedback on model outputs) and internal dashboards Design and implement infrastructure for having humans interact with and red-team models in a live manner Explore HCI tools that use machine learning models to help humans think, write, code, do research, etc.

Responsibilities: The Data Research Analyst will report to CSET’s Director of Data Science and Research and will be responsible for:  Supporting research through data-focused tasks, including but not limited to identifying and evaluating data sources, preparing datasets for analysis, applying appropriate methods to extract information from datasets, and conducting data/code reviews;Developing data visualizations for use in presentations, reports, and interactive web visualizations;Design and execute research proposals and produce data-driven analytic products in coordination with Research Fellows, Research Analysts, Data Scientists, and Center leadership;Collaborating with CSET’s Data Science team to identify data requirements, determine appropriate methods, foster cross-team communication, and effectively leverage CSET data resources;Writing and contributing to CSET publications under the supervision of the Director of Data Science;Communicating, in written and verbal formats, CSET’s data resources and data-driven findings to a range of audiences, including contributing to DC briefings and events;Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, and national security policy.
