Haitian folklore tells of voodoo shamans, or bokors, who would use digitalis, derived from the foxglove plant, to induce somnambulant trances in individuals who would subsequently appear dead.
This reminds me of the documentary we had to watch and how they talk about sometimes their lost loved ones won't really dead when they put them down to rest.
