    1. The mainstream’s anxiety results from the conflict between its relatively recent public creed of inclusion and its continuing subconscious belief that most black men should be excluded.

    1. The nymphs are departed. Sweet Thames

      Nature VS unreal city

Nymphs embody wild nature. The Greek heroes would go out into the wilds, shepherds and shepherdesses would encounter nymphs. The nymphs have gone and the Thames, which is a key identifier of the unreal city.

    2. upside down in air were towers

Towers reversed is a Tarot card meaning fear of change and avoidance of disaster, which if intentional, is hilarious.

    3. Phlebas the Phoenician

      Tarot card reference

    4. Tiresias have foresuffered all

again, knowing things before they happen; foresuffering all. I'm sure everything that happens in the Tarot reading is unfolding through the poem.

    5. last fingers of leaf

      Autumn

    6. And if you don’t give it him, there’s others will

While this common piece of wisdom doesn't require psychic talent, I still feel like it serves the role of prophecy in this section.

    7. wicked pack of cards

      Tarot cards

    8. clairvoyante

Clairvoyantes are people who can see the future and/or things that are happening in the present, but to someone else.

    9. Marie

The speaker of the poem (at least so far) is a woman, and therefore not the author or an author-insert indistinguishable from the author.

    10. FABBRO

I Google Translated the text from the image. I don't know how to type in the Russian characters, but the Latin says this: "In fact, with my own eyes I saw the Sibyl hanging in a jar at Cumae, and when the boys said, she answered"

    1. Worships

Such a charged image, with repitiions and frenzies. What purpose this religious, devote word paired with door? Simple door? Plain door?

    2. Neglect

I'm still really interested in the intention vs abstraction in this poem. In order to neglect there has to be an accepted order. What's the accepted order here?

    3. Arrange

This is such an intentional verb. It implies a plan, but this whole poem seems to cascade without order. Why this juxtaposition?

    1. human

Time has not warped them for good or for ill. This is also an out of place word in the first stanza (what else should clerks be, if not human?) that hints towards the subject of the second. We expect poets and kings to be more than us, yet they are not now and never were.

    1. As if I couldn’t see through him!

The irony here is that it sounds very much as though John has been gaslighting her this whole time. HIs actions, limitations, and undercutting comments and opinions have been toxic this whole time. It's only now, in the grip of this rapidly increasing delusion, that she can finally see how shady John really is.

    1. the Nation

Aka, White People. Also, I'm thinking of "The Birth of a Nation" here.

    2. while sociologists gleefully count his bastards and his prostitutes, the very soul of the toiling, sweating black man is darkened by the shadow of a vast despair.

In another class, we're discussing how pathologizing populations through studies harms that population. Using statistics ("counting his bastards") to support cultural thinking about a population... like that Black men are bad, absent fathers. At the same time, the statistic fails to convey any real understanding of the group being studied--such as the soul darkened by the shadow of a vast despair.

    3. meant not only the loss of ancient African chastity, but also the hereditary weight of a mass of corruption from white adulterers,

The worst of the white legacy is rape, adultery, and sexual immorality that was forcibly stamped onto the current "Negro" population.

    4. it changed the child of Emancipation to the youth with dawning self-consciousness, self-realization, self-respect.

Education is always a contextualizing force. Self-respect and self-knowledge are often a byproduct of the humanities, and general education as a whole.

    5. Away back in the days of bondage they thought to see in one divine event the end of all doubt and disappointment

Freedom was supposed to be equality. Simply being free didn't make up for other forms of oppression working against the newly free people.

    6. He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an American, without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors of Opportunity closed roughly in his face.

The ideal situation is not a reversal of position, but gaining true equality.

    1. The repose of the hung belly

Fatness in wild pigs indicates health and abundance. In domestic, that slaughter is nigh.

    2. out of bus ride, West Virginia to Kiss My Ass, out of buried aunties,

This stanza deals heavily with origins, and he blends physical origins with family, historical origins. The physical journey of a bus ride is the same kind of emotional journey as dead aunts and mothers you can see harden.

    3. They Lion

They vs their is a distinct use of diction that's intended, in this case, to present not only a working class feel but one that suggests race. While "They Feed They Lion" doesn't say that it's about the struggles of African-Americans, the language of the poem is precise and clear.
