I found it interesting how Wikipedia administrators are painted less as “authorities” and more as trusted volunteers with extra technical tools. Conversely, the article shows how much power admins actually have, which makes the emphasis on neutrality, accountability, and consensus especially important in maintaining trust on the platform..

The people in charge of social media platforms are typically tech executives who direct their moderation teams with legal council, and their individual viewpoints and business goals this influence the rules that get enforced (or not). As a direct result, moderation policies are more so often subject to political pressure and profit motives, or even the personal beliefs of platform leadership.

I think people should generally give credit when reposting or reusing someone else’s work, especially if it’s art, photography, writing, or originally created videos. For memes and gifs, I can see how attribution is harder because they spread so quickly, but if the original creator is known, tagging or linking them would be the respectful thing to do.

I think Wesch makes a really interesting point here about how internet culture is built around remixing and reinterpreting media, and the critical vulnerability being that most copyright laws haven’t caught up to that reality. It’s kind of strange that so much normal online creativity can technically exist in a legal gray area, with most people not even realizing it.

They could tweak algorithms to prioritize instead a reliable, wider spectrum of content rather than just whatever gets the most clicks or outrage. Also, giving users more control over what they see (and being transparent about why things are recommended) would probably make the whole system feel a lot less manipulative.

I think social media platforms should have a clear responsibility to not push harmful or misleading content just because it drives engagement. At the very least, they should be transparent about how their algorithms actually work and actively try to reduce the spread of misinformation and content that does end up hurting people.

Their whole business model is built on collecting as much data as possible so they can target ads and keep people hooked, so being strict about privacy essentially works against their own interests. Plus, there are not strong consequences when they do mess up, so there’s less pressure to actually prioritize user privacy.

I think I'm most concerned with just how much data platforms like Instagram quietly collect and thus how easy it is for stuff to spread way beyond those who you intended to see it. Also kind of unsettling that even deleted posts or private info might still exist somewhere or get used in ways you don’t get to fully control.

I think that ignoring is often the only strategy available to me as a user (and therefore the 'best way'), whereas I believe that it is the responsibility of the relevant social media platform to itself moderate such trolling, especially by enabling self-reporting features.

This quote, from my perspective, stood out because of its emphasis on 'belief in words.' The delight in discrediting serious argument is precisely the motivator behind many trolls actions, perhaps because they themselves feel incapable of or insecure in articulating or contributing their own legitimate opinions.

I agree with this framework in terms of how I operate with regard to most situations, though I believe that existentialism often goes hand in hand with utilitarianism as people believe in or turn to the capacity of one another to determine what is morally acceptable.

I think that social media has amplified some of the worst tendencies of human beings in real life, such as our obsessions with image and popularity. In this manner, social media acts as an 'amplifier' or microscope to some of our most fundamental issues as human beings.
