Some instances, however, call for the more radical approach of “working the system” in-stead. Especially early in your career, when you choose to react to wobble by working the system, it’s essential that you have a very firm rationale that is grounded in theory, research, and/or the recommendations of professional organizations, so that you can justify what you’re doing and why to those in positions of power over you

      Learning when "work the system" or "work within the system is a very nuanced special skill that takes a few years of professional experience to master but nevertheless vital to progress.

    1. When the school introduces and trains each child of society into membership within such a little community, saturating him with the spirit of service, and providing him with the instruments of effective self-direction, we shall have the deepest and best guarantee of a larger society which is worthy, lovely, and harmonious.

      This idealistic but is it realistic? When you think about the context and audience of this essay at the time, did it truly include everyone in every society and community? Although his statement is open ended and all inclusive I have a hard time conceiving equity in connected learning in today's landscape and certainly back then. The paradigm shifts to how do you work towards equity with these ideas confined by inequality and the limitations of one's community.

    2. It is as rational to conceive of the locomotive or the telegraph as personal devices. The modification going on in the method and curriculum of education is as much a product of the changed social situation, and as much an effort to meet the needs of the new society that is forming, as are changes in modes of industry and commerce.

      It is fascinating that Dewey used inventions early 1800's to demonstrate the need for change/adjustments in the way we teach and learn when new modes of industry and commerce are developed. Such a progressive in education for his time.

    3. What the best and wisest parent wants for his own child, that must the community want for all of its children.

      The goals of the community should seek equity and be aligned with the best intentions for all.. This is a great aspiration but it conflicts with the dominant culture of our capitalistic society in America.
