    1. and of course, we have many students who really don’t fit any of these profiles, or who interestingly fit all of them)

As a 26 year military veteran I am so grateful for the IDS program at PSU. Coming here with "a lot" of transfer credits I accumulated over the years, the IDS program was a perfect fit for me. Being an untraditional student feels a little odd at times, but this is a program I would recommend to others, hands down!

    2. We also have a commitment to replying to student emails within 24 hours (generally within 30 minutes) and the ability to use low-tech videoconferencing (usually through appearin) to accommodate commuters and online students more easily.

The IDS staff, and Dr. DeRosa are so responsive. They truly are approachable, and go the distance to help you. I found Dr. DeRosa's help in getting me connected to an advisor so critical in my success with developing my major. Thank you!

    3. create their own ePorts through the Domain of One’s Own program; they contribute to the program-created OER textbook that we use; they engage in a Connected Learning PLN-building experience to grow their own custom networks over the course of their educations; and they are made aware of the program’s support scaffolds that are in place to help them face barriers (more about all of this later).

I love how IDSintro has exposed me to new platforms such as developing an eport and blog, using twitter and tweetdeck, and even using Hypothises and annotating. It's a lot to take in at times, but the value is so worth it.

    1. Reminds me of a analogy of stove pipes. Instead of having multiple stove pipes or disciplines, we become integrated, and allow information to flow more easily.

    1. There are many employees behind the scenes that deal with the planning and logistics that customers don’t realize.

I see Interdisciplinary brought into flying, and every business plans for success.

    1. Declaring this major feels like me declaring, “I will not settle for less! I will make the most of my opportunities!” And that feels really good because unlike many other majors where it is easy to feel trapped or to feel stuck in this routine that everyone who has graduated with your degree has gone through- the same process; this study has me standing alone and in this case, that isn’t a bad thing.

This reminds me that I am not using the cookie cutter major. I'm developing something unique to me, it's not an already existing mold, it's my mold, and YES, I agree, it does feel really good.

    1. That’s the nature of growing up

A lot of the articles seem to be focused on the younger student. Which I get, that is the majority. As an older student, I find the IDS program a perfect way to take my experience(s) from a long career and apply them towards finishing my education. Reversing the standard order, but applying multiple disciplines in a career to a formal education is very Interdisciplinary.

    1. A person who is genuinely interested in what they’re currently doing is much more valuable to an organization than a person who is doing something as a means to an end.

      Such a powerful statement.

    1. Students are able to combine multiple disciplines and pursue different ways of thinking about the same problem or subject.

IDS is the way to go! I'm so grateful for the program and opportunity to develop my own major and education.

    1. It never really came to mind that teachers of the same subject were together during the school day simply to discuss developments in their field; I just thought it worked out that they were friends

      Networking 101.

    1. Already we see much collaboration in medicine between researchers and doctors, but how much of it is multidisciplinary, rather than interdisciplinary as it should be?

Interesting point, especially referring back to your example of one's skin health.

    1. Distance learning started with being sent a single chapter, but now allows students to complete a bachelor’s degree in two years from an accredited institution

What a huge time and money saver, a great tool for avoiding large student loans and getting started in a career earlier.

    1. You may prolong this branching out process for a while, until a reasonably coherent picture emerges.

Brainstorming, breaking it down, drilling down, etc. I see how it definitely applies to multi fascited and complex subject matter. It reminds me of the onion, multiple layers form an onion, but one onion is usually good for a dish when cooking a meal. It's but an ingredient to the entree.

    2. We need to reconceptualize our model of disciplinary growth and specialization, adopting a more organic model that accounts for the intricate links among the many specializations.

sounds like he is referring to "Interdisciplinary", to me.

    1. An epistemology is a worldview, ideology, or approach to truth and knowledge.

This sounds like "big picture". But dependable and solid information.

    1. Someone might tell you that Plymouth, New Hampshire only has a handful of violent crimes per year. They might also tell you that NYC has thousands more violent crimes per year.

Context IS important. They always say, the details can change everything.

    1. But connoisseurs sometimes wish to mingle fruits

I like this. A fruit is good alone, but can certainly be mingled, and the results are totally different. I see the metaphor when talking about IDS. Very nice.

    1. nterdisciplinarity: Incorporates several fields of study to allow collaboration among diverse disciplines to either specify or broaden students’ education, to gain understanding, and/or to problem solve.

It's neat to see the pure definition and then think of how it applies to what we are doing; designing our Interdisciplinary Degree.

    1. In just four years, students are expected to be informed about such issues as our nation’s history, democratic society, global economy, international relations, and computer technology, and, for many, to be prepared for graduate study in medicine, law, business, art, architecture, or technical schools.

Obviously, these are life long lessons that are not compressed into a four year college experience. I'm an "adult student" and have had the advantage of a full career already, but these are vast subjects that go on for a lifetime.

    1. If assignments are going to live online, don’t they need to be connected to a public dialogue? Don’t they need to be oriented at the proper audience?

I see the benefit of developing one's own website / blog, but it does raise the question, "who is the target audience?" My professor, or my neighbors? What is the benefit to both? Do both have an interest? Developing a digital footprint is important, but is it for everyone, that's another story.

    1. Just as the real computing revolution didn’t happen until the computer became truly personal, the real IT revolution in teaching and learning won’t happen until each student builds a personal cyberinfrastructure that is as thoughtfully, rigorously, and expressively composed as an excellent essay or an ingenious experiment.

I find this opportunity of building my own website and blog a bit intimidating, but also a skill I find great value in. I appreciate the breakaway from other social media platforms to something more tangible, something useful in a professional setting. Something progressive.

    1. At the simplest level, a Domain of One’s Own helps students build their own digital portfolio. They can be used in a classroom setting in order for students to demonstrate their learning. These portfolios can contain text, images, video and audio recordings, giving students opportunities to express themselves in a variety of ways beyond the traditional pen-and-paper test or essay.

This is such a useful tool. Gaining knowledge and experience of tools that are used well beyond academic use, and having a better understanding of the "how to" and the control of your own image is so powerful.
