The "silence" -- we could feel the sisters are quite sad and even tired, so when there is a difference, they don't want to say anything, because they are already so heartbroken.

    4. wanted to.

I think it let me think about the another book -- The Outsider, the first chapter is a little bit like this, like his mother was dead, and he felt like that he should be sad, and he should cry.

Even before the conduct of experiment, she already forgave him -- she was really, really fell in love with him, I think. And that is no doubt that why she kept the secret so long.

There are many dates in this part of narrative. I think they make the whole story more organized and let us to feel more eager to know the answer of the experiment.

I think the truth is apparent enough. Didn't he notice that the more he dig into this case, the more Miss Rachel alienated him?

    8. She even feels an interest in the other person who was roughly used–Mr. Luker

Maybe she had the diamond and let Mr. Godfrey to sell it to Mr. Luker?

    9. insignificant-looking a person

I think it is kind of a trick -- contrast to the Mr. Betteredge's narrative, so the readers could jump out of the box, to think and to wonder whose narrative is true or, everyone has bias, and then, in such case, who actually is the thief?

    10. The devil’s dance of the Indian Diamond has threaded its way to London

Such a long journey, I guess I must read more to figure the mystery out.

    11. why she should have hidden it

Based on the truth that it could be pulled outside the sand, I guess she want to hide it, not to throw it away. Maybe the cloth is not hers, and she want to retrieve it some day in the future to show her integrity.

    12. that the other ladies and gentlemen in the house will consent, too?

I think it is a kind of writing tricks, which means first give something negative about a character, and in fact, to make his intelligence even more impressed later.

    15. She said, ‘They will never find the Diamond, sir, will they? No! nor the person who took it–I’ll answer for that.’

I think she knew the whole thing -- who stole the Diamond, and maybe the stealer lost the Diamond as well -- that is why she said "Nor the person who took it"

    16. I am afraid she knows more about the Moonstone than she ought to know

I am afraid she is not the only person who know more about the Moonstone than she ought to know -- that is, I think Mr. Franklin may be so as well.

    17. She went up to Mr. Franklin without appearing to notice Mr. Godfrey

With utterly changing of her action, she hurried to see Mr. Franklin, "without another word", "without heeding", "without notice", such a hurry reflects that there must be something happened -- which leads us to follow the plot. It successfully makes me longing to read more ! !

    18. Mr. Godfrey whispered to me

Why these two men -- Mr. Godfrey and Mr. Franklin -- behaved so differently? I think the difference between them must reflect something. Apparently, author wrote such a plot by some purpose, but now it remains unknown.

A-ha, there is kind of messy. Where did she put the Diamond? Apparently she lost it. We could see it just from this paragraph and there is no need to go on to actually find the answer.

    21. this festival was not prospering as other like festivals

    22. moon

Why moon again? Two different places, the same myth? <br/> Is there kind of a list, that lists all the magic things together, like a collection? If there is one, the first thing on the list must be Dragons I guess, and I gonna to find it out, LOL :)
