I think this could be used in any modern retelling. It reminds me of the stories about wives with abusive husbands, and how they find ways to save themselves or their kids a few more days. This reminds me of the type of magic in A Deadly Education, but instead of hiding useful books they throw them at people.

I love how she personifies the books, and shows their thoughts.
