This meant that my parents were never going to make an effort to communicate with my teachers and that they would never come to the school, and for the most part this ended up being true
It’s tough because school expects parents to engage, but for some families, it’s not that simple. I'm pretty lucky since my mom participated my school life until high school. But I understand when parents are too busy working to make a living or feel disconnected from the school system, the student can end up feeling unsupported or alone in managing school challenges.

Both Clara and Francisco found conscientious, caring counselor-mentors at school who helped them get scholarship aid for college-and, in Clara's case, a graduate degree.
I think Clara and Francisco's stories show how important having supportive mentors can be, especially when students come from challenging backgrounds. It’s inspiring to see how their counselors helped them find scholarships and guided them toward achieving their goals.
