    1. Value: Integrity Ethical Principle: Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner. Social workers are continually aware of the profession’s mission, values, ethical principles, and ethical standards and practice in a manner consistent with them. Social workers should take measures to care for themselves professionally and personally. Social workers act honestly and responsibly and promote ethical practices on the part of the organizations with which they are affiliated.

Based on the podcast with Allen Barsky on technology in social work, the standard that I would adopt when using technology is to ensure I have a strong sense of integrity because, despite the advancement of technology having many pros, it also comes with a lot of cons. The creation of Artificial Intelligence has made many people have to question others integrity and authenticity because many people are abusing this tool. In social work, it is important to have integrity because your clients should be able to completely trust you and know that you would never lie to them in any situation.

    2. A code of ethics cannot guarantee ethical behavior. Moreover, a code of ethics cannot resolve all ethical issues or disputes or capture the richness and complexity involved in striving to make responsible choices within a moral community.

Despite a code of ethics being made and taught to future social workers not every social worker is going to abide by the expectations that is set for this profession. As a result, this makes me worry about power and structural inequality for clients who are minorities or who are in vulnerable situations because social workers are trained professions who are supposed to help people. However, if a social worker cannot place their personal values and beliefs aside when working with clients then in some situations a client may be more at risk at the hands of a social worker. Also, some social workers may take advantage of their clients because of the power they hold when working with vulnerable clients.

    3. Value: Dignity and Worth of the Person Ethical Principle: Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. Social workers treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion, mindful of individual differences and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers promote clients’ socially responsible self-determination. Social workers seek to enhance clients’ capacity and opportunity to change and to address their own needs. Social workers are cognizant of their dual responsibility to clients and to the broader society. They seek to resolve conflicts between clients’ interests and the broader society’s interests in a socially responsible manner consistent with the values, ethical principles, and ethical standards of the profession.

This social work core value is one that I feel I would question the way I would handle most in different situations because it I were assigned a victim who had experienced child abuse, I am unsure if I would be able to treat the parents in a respectful and professional manner, despite the objective of my assistance being for the well-being of the child. I have not had to deal with this scenario yet in my line of work but I fear if I will be able to handle it with the best of my ability.

    4. Value: Service Ethical Principle: Social workers’ primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems Social workers elevate service to others above self-interest. Social workers draw on their knowledge, values, and skills to help people in need and to address social problems. Social workers are encouraged to volunteer some portion of their professional skills with no expectation of significant financial return (pro bono service).

In my current field placement, the social work core value, service, relates to my work because I am assisting children who are in need of it. For example, while I was at my placement, there was a call for assistance in a classroom for a preschool student. The teacher and the child who was displaying aggressive behavior both were in need of my assistance to deescalate the situation.
