    1. Medical Illustration

adding art to other majors is really important because of the stigma that goes with art. because people think that getting an art degree will get you no where here is actual proof of the jobs available for people that want to keep art in their lives and how there are so many jobs that need art in them

    2. Examples right now include Sports Statistics, Medical Illustration, Theater for Social Justice, Sustainable Event Planning, Outdoor Science Education, and a host of others.

majors should not be black and white you shouldn't have to choose one thing and then have zero knowledge about everything else. that's not how the real world works you need skills all over to get to where you want to go. there are so many new jobs being created everyday and one major is not enough

    3. self-motivated, creative, and autodidactic

being able to design your own major was everything i didnt know i wanted until i found it. it gives you freedom and new perspective. not only do i feel like i really found my place in education but i feel in control. I am no longer just taking classes because someone told me thats what i needed, i am taking the classes i want to learn to build my experience so i can get the job i want in a field i want. IDS lets us see this new view where you understand not just one discipline but how the disciplines work together

    4. This is not a story about scale. This is a story about what happens when a program refocuses pedagogy around learners, and retools program design in order to create more flexible structures to support degree completion and student agency.

this program is so much more than just "oh i couldnt decide my major so i made one up" IDS is about your own power and creativity over education. It allows you to learn in and view education from a hole new light that is less about getting an A on the test and forgetting the information a week later and more about taking away experiences and expanding knowledge

    5. Domain of One’s Own program;

having your own online portfolio really is helpful for me as an artist to have a place that both shows who i am and my artwork. I feel like if i did not have my eport of wouldnt have somewhere that I can explain all that IDS majors really do. here i can talk about everything i have learned and show the art i have been creating. it is a great place to get our name out there

    6. This year, we opened a very visible food pantry in our office, which also stocks basic staples (feminine products, detergent, toothbrushes, winter coats). While it gets moderate use, it also helps our students understand that we see food insecurity as an academic issue, and we understand that they will not be able to learn or succeed if they are hungry. Similarly, we offer a child-care co-op program that lets students volunteer to babysit for their classmates’ children when there are childcare emergencies. We also offer a transportation co-op that works much the same way, where we use a text-messaging app to help students request rides from other students if their normal transportation fails for some reason, and we stock gas cards in our office as well. We offer a Veteran’s Support Group and counseling on how the GI Bill affects our military students, and we have a separate contract pathway for GI Bill students that allows them to reduce the number of issues they will run into with their government funding due to the customizable nature of their program.

      IDS is a family <3

    7. (ePorts

the best part about ePorts is that it really is a reflection of your work. when you get a transcript from the school it does not say what you learned and by having your own website and building a profile online you can share the work you did and write about the things your learn and what you actually took away from the classes listed on your transcript. this interdisciplinary program makes people feel more than the letter grade they can get in a class its all about the take away

    8. work across disciplines?

many assume that they are not creative enough or have the time to design there own major but really being an interdisciplinarian is something many do by just expanding their knowledge and building a wider skill set.

    9. (what is a discipline?

so many people learn in an interdisciplinary style and do not even know it. but once people are aware of how impactful this style of learning is they see it in their everyday life.

    1. The first barrier facing interdisciplinary students is attitude.

attitude can be a big barrier because it is how much a person cares about getting the education. their behavior is important that it shows how ambitious they are

    2. Knowledge is like a mosaic: every tile represents a scholar who has spent an entire lifetime exploring a single idea.

i think that just because it takes 10,000 hours to be a master it doesnt mean i am putting 5,000 into one thing and 5,000 into another i am still learning and putting 100% into both disciplines i do

    3. Society needs people to be masters in specific areas because they contribute to the understanding of the world at large.

its good to have a variation of many people but just because i am not a master in just one things doesnt mean i am less at what i do

    4. Why is it desirable to be a “master?”

I would rather be a jack of all trades and learn everything and be able to do many things then be a master at one thing-this is like the other article where the geologist didnt know a commonly known things because he didnt have to know it

    5. 10,000 hours

this reminds me of how much goes into an education because it is so much more than just classes, it is volunteering, working jobs, homework, and extra curricular. so much more goes into an education then just classes its more of the experiences where you learn things

    1. By collaborating a variety of fields, the researchers have been able to close gaps and gather more information that will lead to future research and development in the field.

IDS not only provides the opportunity to fill these gaps but also make a bridge between them. IDS connects the fields and helps you realize why all the disciplines are useful and how to use them effectively

    2. “Childhood is constructed from a diversity of social perspectives, such as son/daughter, citizen, community member, student and patient.”

we are so affected by everything around us while growing up. just like of multiple external factors help us learn as a kid is the same way as it taking multiple disciplines to solve a problem

    3. That is where the interdisciplinary parts come in to take the information from different disciplines to create a better understanding of the concept

IDS comes and saves the day to teach the real important parts that are left out of more education programs

    1. overwhelming. But once you are able to understand how everything comes together, is it not difficult at all to find the information that you are looking for.

we are more successful working together and combining our skills because if there is not communication it is so chaotic

    2. There are many employees behind the scenes that deal with the planning and logistics that customers don’t realize.

The plane analogy works well with IDS because having only one view of how to do something limits how you perceive the process and how much of the process you are capable of

    3. there are tons of planning that goes into them

for everything there is so many different parts and different jobs that it takes to get that final product

    4. You don’t just appear in the sky

this definitely goes along with the whole "honeymoon" phase of IDS that you kinda get caught up in the excitement and then like a lot of things there is a lot more than goes into it then people realize

    1. “I will not settle for less! I will make the most of my opportunities!”

It really is a process of finding yourself. because when i look at the major i made it makes so much sense i wonder why highschool ashley didn't think of this sooner. but now that i am here i really wouldn't want anything other than and IDS major because it opens up the most opportunities

    2. “awareness of your own learning and thinking process”

i think this awareness falls next to self reflection. that once you are aware of what kind of learned you are and what it is you want to learn and how to do it you can then learn better and more productively

    3. world would never grow and would never have the chance to become any better

if people are not "thinking outside the box" then nothing will every chance if we keep doing the same thing that is why we need inventions and imagination

    4. creativity

note that when people say creativity they do not mean art as in painting and drawing but art as the way of thinking. Creativity is originality and innovation.

    5. abstract thinking

Abstract thinking is one of the main traits future employers look for. Interdisciplinary studies teaches abstract thinking in many ways other single majors do not touch upon

    1. Interdisciplinary knowledge involves familiarity with components of two or more disciplines.

Expanding your education to this level, where you include many disciplines, not only increases your chances of getting a job in any of the fields, but also puts you one step ahead in of those just knowledgeable in that one field.

    2. Renaissance Scholar

This phrase of being a renaissance scholar is something of an "out of our limits" idea where you're so good in all categories. This concept is made to look unachievable but really is a vital virtue to our life

    3. But I am not an explorer.

This is a clear metaphor of how you can master one thing and be thought of as smart but not know about something just as obvious. This is why having a broader skill set in many disciplines will help you in whatever you wanna focus in

    1. They might also tell you that NYC has thousands more violent crimes per year.

this is out of context because they are taking about percents but not letting you know the population size so the numbers seem crazy different because its not a rate

    1. change shape themselves.

this is important because just because you are studying more than one 'major' does not mean you're just studying a general topic you are just getting educated on more topics

    1. the construction of the whole”

sounds like the cluster programs here at plymouth state where we are focusing on having wider skill sets of knowledge and less on educating on just one 'major'

    2. fragmentation of knowledge itself.

education is only as strong as it is together because you need a solid foundation to build on. the schools need to work together to help students in the most productive and effective way

    3. Instead of helping students learn and grow as individuals, find meaning in their lives, or understand their role in society, college has become a chaotic maze where students try to pick up something useful as they search for the exit

my teacher once told me that he would rather have me leave the class with a C and have gained so many important lessons and knowledge then to leave with an A and have only memorized stuff for tests and not actually learned anything. this is important because you should be working towards taking something away from classes not just doing the bare minimum to pass

    4. passionate interests

you only get something out of college from what you put into it. so if you do not take advantage of all the opportunities like classes, clubs, and events you will not enjoy your time in college. finding things you are passionate about drives you to do more and care about the things youre doing

    1. I agree that owning data has the potential to give students agency and control. But it is not a guarantee.

yes having your own domain and access to the web can create new agency in students because it is easier and for some more entertaining because of the element of technology but there is always that " no gaurentee because ambition isnt going to just come out of no where just because the internet is involved.

    1. students not only would acquire crucial technical skills for their digital lives but also would engage in work that provides richly teachable moments ranging from multimodal writing to information science, knowledge management, bibliographic instruction, and social networking

this new network of education allows a whole new environment for faculty and student interaction and building a professional face

    1. yes it is dangerous to post online as a student because it can be too much personal information out to the public or your work can get stolen but it also opens a new place where a student can build a professional network
