    1. And-But-Therefore template is

I dont think I am a fan of this story telling way it is very simplistic and is telling you the story rather than showing you, I personally believe stories should be told orally verbally and shown textually

    2. The tension can be subtle,

I feel that tension could even be even woven in easily into the story as, it is especially necessary when conducting something to have tension because something easily won is not won but rather given and is a forgetful feeling.

    1. designer as a facilitator rather than an ex

I like this quote as well because it is grounding to adhere ourselves to principles of benefiting and working for communities rather than working at them and making things we think would benefit them.

    2. to seek liberation from exploitative and oppressive systems..d-undefined, .lh-undefined { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2) !important; }1Thomas Sinn

I find this one the most impactful in its wording that it directly calls some designers complicit or downright oppressive in their designs by participating and exploiting oppressive systems to their benefits

    1. You could spend an hour or two conducting a walkthrough, and end up either with problems that aren’t real problems, or overlooking serious issues that you believed weren’t problems.

This makes sense especially with how we as students would inevitably try to complete the assignment without trying to follow the requirements as to make our life easier I liked this point.

    1. We call these failures breakdowns, the idea being that someone can be following the correct sequence of steps to complete a task, but then fail to get past a crucial step.

This idea is also important in day to day academic life, as things make sense to you as the one in your head but we must be able to translate that into usability and understanding for others.

    1. if Google could only be used with a mouse, it would immediately exclude all people who cannot use a mouse

This made me start thinking about how these features are somewhat "hidden" to those who do not rely on these features, which makes me think how do we advertise it.

    1. You don’t make a prototype in the hopes that you’ll turn it into the final implemented solution

This is a very interesting take and very insightful to my thought process which opens up a lot of avenues of fixing my process of doing things in the design process by implementing this.

    1. Even small wording differences can substantially affect the answers people provide.

It is useful to be very careful in your wording and trying to use the most abstract or general or fact based language (even though sometimes being fact based can be biased) Even slight tonal undertones can affect answers.

    1. Why did they fail?

Sometimes this is harder to infer when searching, therefore it is better to have personal experiences such as before delving into the problem design aspect which is where passion comes into play.

    1. It’s also key to surfacing who precisely is benefiting from design

It is a sort of grounding of who this design is for i.e. you may like flashy lights but if you are trying to make an inclusive website that would be an infringement on the idea of inclusivity.

    2. Scenarios are closely related to the idea of use cases,

They are quite different n that, scenarios is the existence of a problem whereas use cases is an existence of a solution, relative to each other perhaps but not related I believe.

    1. Glass argues that you also need to develop taste.

I personally feel that taste is more in the realm of appreciation for arts rather than, what you cook? but thats just my thinking process.

    2. However, most societies do not value creative thinking and so our skills in generating ideas rapidly atrophies, as we do not practice it, and instead actively learn to suppress it1

its true that many creatives are often starving artists or of that trope in their lifetime but after revered because they were apart of the culture and for the people, so it must always be about doing what you think is right but often times that is not supported.

    1. not urban technophiles who want a faster ride to work).

I love this distinction made by the author because you truly do have to pick who to support and it should be the most marginalized, the ideology is leaning towards communism, in the sense that there are not exceedingly rich folk rather everyone is supported and i love that.

    2. problem is never “solved”.

I think thats why wording is especially important I believe we can not name things problems and "solve" them because they truly do not get solved the symptoms are reduced but is the problem gone? no.

    1. identifying potential terrorists

I really like this analogy that the author uses however, she barely skimpers on the surface, giving an example and really nailing on it would be more beneficial, for people that do not have lived experience of what this means they would not get it. Maintaining political power in times of turmoil is benefiting off the political climate to screen and subjugate those that look like the "Other" (Edward Said Orientalism) to harsh practices, such as muslims, brown people, POC.

    2. person’s needs

Whilst I agree I also think we should think about technology in a holistic point of view, where this data can be recorded and sold to corporations to make more money based off your usage.

    1. Designers must be able to justify a choice

Most of the time, nowadays the justification is profit, often played off as changing accessibility, making the iphone not have a headphone jack making people buy new headphones and chargers.

    1. If you could magically change anything about how people behave on social media, what would it be?

I would eliminate the profit companies get from social medias, because capitalism shapes everything into being less creative and more like clones of apps that are popular such as reels and shorts being copies of tik tok scroll methos

    2. How have your views on social media changed (or been reinforced)?

The critical consumption of media has been reinforced and been given better grounds to be more critical , such as parasocial relationships and their effects.

    1. Finally, colonialism is justified by belief in the inferiority of the subjugated people (e.g., barbaric, savage, godless, backwards), and the superiority of the group doing the subjugation (e.g., civilized, advanced). So how do we see this here?

This idea is propagated by the propaganda of the social medias created by the Other (Said, orientalism) that it is inferior because of the inferirorty of the Other in itself.

    1. In what ways do you see capitalism, socialism, and other funding models show up in the country you are from or are living in?

capitalism is all around in america because of consumerism, the marketing and social construction of the ideas of consumerism garner responses to inevitably boost uptake of production.

    1. What do you consider to be the most important factors in making an instance of public shaming bad?

While having its upsides it also has its downsides in that the people shaming could have ulterior motives or bigoted motives in that they dislike something for the wrong reasons and hide it under the guise of their displeasure.

    2. What do you consider to be the most important factors in making an instance of public shaming good (if you think that is possible)?

I think of public shaming as tool by the "people" as a collective against politicians and people in power, it is an effective tool especially if your mass shaming and or bring the shaming to them in real life.

    1. How do you think social media platforms should handle crowd harassment? Are there things they should do to reduce it?

It is very hard to do lower harassment on social media individually, maybe creator to audience but even then it’s hard to control people.

    2. How do social media platforms make harassment possible?

I believe the way social media is structured makes it so that harassment becomes hard NOT to do. Such as the way to comment and quote retweet on Twitter, or put someone’s post on insta stories. With larger audiences it becomes harder to not harass someone.

    1. What do you think a social media company’s responsibility is for the crowd actions taken by users on its platform?

i think for this they need moderators to moderate their changes and approve them, though a lot of costs overall it is beneficial. or they can crowdsource people to be their own moderators.

    2. In what ways do you think you’ve participated in any crowdsourcing online?

I've done crowdsourcing in the ad-hoc type of way, which for example i created an edit of characters from a show and then from that people started to watch the niche show i edited.

    1. What support should content moderators have from social media companies and from governments?

i think support in regards to anything concerning with health, as their job requires a lot of impending strain. This may affect their physical and/or mental health immensely.

    1. What would be considered bad actions that need to be moderated?

Taking pictures and videos that have strangers faces in them and posting them would be considered bad. An alternative is to be vigilant of NOT recording others and posting them without their consent if not possible then blurring out their faces.

    1. Are there ways social media sites can be designed to be better for the mental health of its users?

I feel like it can be designed to be better for mental health however, they would lse money in doing so, so i think that most companies wont.

    2. In what ways have you found social media bad for your mental health and good for your mental health?

finding a community was good for my mental health as it gave me a place of belonging with no strings attached, however the negatives that come with the reliance and over use of the internet were very apparent on my mental health

    1. Would you like something you do or say to go viral?

Not at all honestly, there are too many grievances with creating a meme or trend, such as people might start hating on you or you get unwanted fame, and or the complete opposite effect some people might even forget you started it, such as Black tik tokers creating dance trends and then being forgotten when a famous usually white tik toker steals uses their dance without credit and makes it their thing

    2. In what ways have you participated in helping content go viral?

I have participated in making things go viral, such as memes and even trends in the way that i might retweet or recreate something on stories little things i see i copy in my own way sometimes or sometimes if i like it enough i will fully copy it

    1. recommendation algorithm

a cataclysmic effect of recommendation algorithm is its ability to enclose one into an echo chamber, no new ideas same regurgitated thinking over and over again. it rots ones minds and it often leads to bigoted issues, such as white supremacy.

    1. Sometimes though, individuals are still blamed for systemic problems. For example, Elon Musk, who has the power to change Twitters recommendation algorithm, blames the users for the results:

However, he holds a racist system up, and his wealth came from a racist system so to say he has the ability to change that is true however he does not want to, it benefits him.

    1. We mentioned Design Justice earlier, but it is worth reiterating again here that design justice includes considering which groups get to be part of the design process itself.

Design justice should be an integral part of the designing process of any product function or service. Maybe even asynchronous design justice process, such as reviews and feedback.

    2. The following tweet has a video of a soap dispenser that apparently was only designed to work for people with light-colored skin.1

the idea itself is quite insane, because these devices require motion so setting an extra barrier for it to work making it only work on light colored motion is an extra step created and inefficient, which is the general consensus bigotry leads to inefficiency out of pure spite.

    1. What incentives to social media companies have to violate privacy?

A lot, this is because the incentives to take information is so beneficial for companies and the fact that it can be easily done under the table.

    2. at are your biggest concerns around privacy on social media?

Privacy is a fantasy sold to people social media sites will always take your information wether you consent or not. However they hide this fact under the guise of choice wether you want to share your information or not. This is not true because a lot of information can be taken from a simple picture you click

    1. Do you think there is information that could be discovered through data mining that social media companies should seek out (e.g., they can’t make their platform treat people fairly without knowing this)?

absolutely not, i believe that this would lead to more problems than anything. such as the outing of someones beliefs sexuality gender stances, etc. the drawbacks outweigh any advantages given to the people who's data is sought out.

    2. Are you surprised by any of the things that can be done with data mining?

what was surprising how much data can be assumed by the simple sliver hair strand of one single data piece, which is fascinating. However, i understood digital footprint to a eep extent because i am an avid user of a lot of social media websites

    1. Do not argue with trolls - it means that they win

i agree with this way of thinking because rhe more you engage with a troll the more angry you will get because the more they will respond in unserious trolling manner which will enrage the person even more.

    1. Trolling is sometimes done in order to advance an argument or make a point. For example, proving that supposedly reliable news sources are gullible by getting them to repeat an absurd gross story.

This was recently done but slightly different where a satirist bassam was brought for an interview on live with piers morgan, and where he repeats the opposition claims but in simpler terms to therefore genuinely make their claims sound even more absurd than it already is.

    1. When someone presents themselves as open and as sharing their vulnerabilities with us, it makes the connection feel authentic.

i feel as though this is a tactic deployed by influencers or anyone honestly to garner sympathy. pathological liars on the internet often use this tactic to cover up for their mistakes. And this tactic can increase the parasocialism felt by the influenced.

    2. Many users were upset that what they had been watching wasn’t authentic.

Personally i wouldn't care, if i was entertained, i would rather be infatuated with the reason of why she lied. It is interesting to see people lie for the online community to make a life story up just to entertain en masse.

    1. Some social media sites offer one-way connections, like following someone on Twitter or subscribing to a YouTube channel.

Theres a term for that called parasocial relationship, it is where one party is say an influencer and the other is the influenced or follower. Its sort of like a parasitic relationship where the influencer survives based on the delusions of the follower. And the follower survives and lives based on the perceived actions and personality of the infuencer.

    1. 4Chan

4chan was a very off brand website where everyone there was very edgy. Quite a few murder cases were solved with the help of 4chan users so it had its pros and cons.

    1. interest it would generate for us

This reminds me of. a case that interests me, a white photographer found a beautiful girl in Afghanistan while she was in school. He asked for her and in private took photos of her eyes and face, they blew up and got on the cover of vogue. However, the girl, shamima begam, had not given consent for that with the fact that in afghan culture it is impermissible to be with a man outside of the family alone. The man became renowned for the picture and shamima received no compensation, in fact since her face was so popular she was deported from Pakistan where she took refuge. Any sense of ethics would deplore this act by the man but alas, it was a terrible situation for shamima. I feel as though with ethics, there lies many factors and factors of balance that are missing. The man and shamima were not on equal footing at all, he was a white man with power, and she was a "subaltern".

    1. Now it’s your turn, choose some data that you might want to store on a social media type, and think through the storage types and constraints you might want to use:

I feel as though besides the automated data types it is very easy to manipulate the constraints for example a few examples of this would be age. I've seen people who are thirteen and under on twitter its very precarious to enforce too because how do we decide if this person is actually under 13 or not.

    1. How are people’s expectations different for a bot and a “normal” user?

I personally believe its a learned trait of differentiating bots from "normal" users. It is accomplished by extensive use of the internet and social media platforms, one deciphers actions of users and may be able to differentiate bot from user. Such as maybe a normal user may not post regularly on the same time, and about the same topic. Normal users may forget to post or may not want to post a day or time

    1. example

Theres also bots that keyword search on sites and reply to them, as the example of twitter bots replying to random tweets that include keywords. There are different types of keywords and bots, for example "essay bots" are bots that find tweets that say "My essay is due" and reply to them saying they can help. Another example are "insta bots" on twitter that search for tweets containing words such as "my insta/instagram account was banned" and they reply with malicious links under the guise of trying to help you.

    1. You don’t know what to do, so you sit down and work through your options with a list of ethical frameworks.

through the deontology method you can perceive the situation through, you not caring about what your parent would think of you. Rather you want them to be taken care of. Or you ignore the consequences of not giving them a caretaker, in hopes to respect their wishes.

    1. In that tweet, Nate Silver seems to be saying that conversations and views represented on Twitter are not representative of most people, thus devaluing the conversations and views expressed on Twitter.

However true, a good chunk of conversations happening on twitter would usually not happen in real life. It is worth pointing out that twitter gives an even playing ground for opinions, such as regressed minorities having little repercussions for speaking their truth. Which in real life it is harder to do, maybe because of the other plethora of issues or lack of "importance" in debating a minuscule topic of issue.

    1. What financial motivations does Twitter have? How does that influence Twitter’s design?

It's not about any financial gain it's more-so of a vigilante way of thinking. As more things were uncovered (Her job, Other racist tweets.) at the time, the situation got more inflamed.
