    1. Beneficial to students, academic staff and professors alike, academic freedom has special application to the classroom and has been described by U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan as "...of transcendent value to all of us and not merely to the teachers concerned. That freedom is therefore a special concern of the First Amendment, which does not tolerate laws that cast a pall of orthodoxy over the classroom....The classroom is peculiarly the marketplace of ideas."

    1. Mark Twain was American literature’s first critical race theorist

I suppose I never really thought about him through that lens before... given that critical race theory wasn't really a thing until later...

    2. Twain’s covert and disruptive meanings were as submerged as the wrecked steamboat Walter Scott, and his audience both then and now was inclined not to look beneath the surface of the muddy Mississippi

    1. meritocracy

yeah no, as long as there's access problems in tech, it's not a meritocracy. Institutional forms of oppression/privilege permeate all aspects of culture, including tech and open-source communities. I think it's undeniably the case that open-source practices are more equitable, however saying those practices enable a meritocracy is probably "a bad."
