    1. When college leaders, in any region, decide they’re no longer willing to accept subpar graduation rates, they can usually do something about it.

I think this is very important. Houston's dropout rate would have never gotten better if they hadn't sat down and decided it was time to do something about it. All schools that are struggling to meet their expected graduation rate should make increasing it a "no-excuse priority"

    2. Research has repeatedly found that financial aid tends to lift graduation rates, said Ben Castleman, an education professor at the University of Virginia. Affordability is “probably the biggest factor” prompting dropouts, he said.

This is probably due to the fact that a majority of the people who have the right knowledge and will graduate can't afford the colleges they deserve to attend. Financial aid helps this just a little

    3. Many colleges also publish “degree road maps” that guide students through a course of study. And more colleges are pushing students to take enough classes to graduate in four years, instead of thinking of college as open-ended.

I really like the roadmaps and think it is very helpful when you're signing up for classes. I never took into consideration how colleges without them could potentially struggle.

    4. In response, Alliance has put together its own ranking, based on colleges’ graduation rates for students who are black or Latino (as most Alliance students are). It then encourages students to attend a college with a relatively high rate. “A bachelor’s degree,” Suitor said, “is the single most influential determinant in multigenerational change and ending the cycle of poverty.”

I think that this is an important factor to look into especially if you are part of a minority group and looking to apply to college. As sad as it is, the truth is that there are still schools and students who will discriminate against these groups, making it difficult for them to complete college.

    5. For too long, high-school students, parents and guidance counselors have hardly thought about graduation rates when choosing a college. And for a long time on many campuses, administrators and faculty members didn’t even know what their college’s graduation rate was.

This is interesting because I know that my high school and it's counselors stressed this kind of information and it was always seen as a big factor contributing to deciding where you want to apply

    6. Many lower-income and middle-class students excel in high school only to falter in college. They then struggle to get good jobs.

I feel like this is because high-achieving colleges are so expensive nowadays, that no matter how smart you are or how much you deserve it there is nothing you can do if you can't afford it

    1. Here is a fun exercise that allows you to see how well you have balanced your ideas and words with your textual evidence sandwich. You may use this as a revision strategy on your own or as a peer review and revision strategy with other writers.

This is a good idea for something I should do next time I finish a piece of writing. It would help me make sure that I have everything I need

    2. A short list of verbs to use in signal phrases

I can see myself coming back to this list often in the future. I usually struggle trying to find different words to lead into my quotes with.

    1. consider using different forms of evidence to inform your audience about the topic

I think this will be helpful to me since I usually just use a quote for my evidence. I never really thought of other ways to branch out but this gave me good suggestions

    1. 1. Standard English 2. Working class and slang English 3. Standard Spanish 4. Standard Mexican Spanish 5. North Mexican Spanish dialect 6. Chicano Spanish (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California have regional variations) 7. Tex-Mex 8. Pachuco (called cal6)

It baffles me that people would be discriminated against for speaking other languages. To me, speaking this variety of languages demonstrates intelligence and is necessary for certain oppurtunites.

    2. remember being caught speaking Spanish at recess -that was good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler. I remember being sent to the comer of the classroom for "talking back" to the Anglo teacher when all I was trying to do was tell her how to pronounce my name.

This is upsetting because these exact kind of actions have lead to many people "losing" their native language because they are conditioned not to speak it, sometimes even forgetting

    3. hen watching Mexican movies, I felt a sense of home-coming as well as alienation. People who were to amount to some-thing didn't go to Mexican movies, or bailes, or tune their radios to bolero, rm,cherita, and corrido music.

I feel like this is a reoccurring theme in all the texts and vides we are viewing. It's sad that some people excited to see their own culture portrayed in film and books just because it's not like the "normal" books they were exposed to.

    4. as long as I have to accommodate the English speakers rather than having them accommodate me, my tongue will be illegitimate.

This is an important idea that still needs more attention to this day. Our countries population is so diverse, there is no need for people to accommodate for english speakers when they don't have to.

    5. If a person, Chicana or Latina, has a low estimation of my 25 native tongue, she also has a low estimation of me.

I really respect how she identifies herself with her culture and language. It is clear that she is very passionate about this.

    6. When I first moved to San Francisco, I'd rattle off something in Spanish, unintentionally embarrassing them.

This stood out to me because she used the word "embarrassing". It upsets me that someone would feel embarrassed to speak their native language.

    1. pg. 263 "Book after book showed me how the white man had brought upon the worlds black, brown, red, yellow peoples every variety of the sufferings of exploitations" In this quote, Malcom X is conveying how its not just one race that faces discrimination and how its a ongoing problem for everybody.

    2. pg 262 "I never will forget how shocked when I was when I began reading about slavery's total horror. It made such an impact upon me that it later became one of my favorite subjects.." This reminds me of the TED talk we watched. The fact that he didn't know about slavery in books until he read about it. Similar to how she didn't know about Africans in books until later on

    3. Pg. 259 "In fact, up to then, I never had been so truly free in my life." This shows the true power reading has, especially to people who don't have many resources available

    4. top paragraph pg.261 This quote stuck out to me because this is an issue thats still very prevalent today. People are learning more about black history from social media and their peers than they were ever taught in school, myself included.

    5. last paragraph of pg. 258 This paragraph was really wholesome to read. I don't think people realize that not everyone is fortunate enough to learn how to read and write at a young age.

    1. My mother has long realized the limitations ofher English as well

Her english is not limited, but SHE has limitations due to the way she speaks it. It's upsetting to see how some one could have so little options and opportunities just because its take a bit more effort to understand them.

    2. I've heard other termsused, "limited English," for example. But they seem just as bad, as ifeverything is limited, includingpeople's perceptions of

I don't think I would even consider her english limited. She knows how to speak english, its not limited. Her pronunciation may be limited but that doesn't mean she doesn't know the language.

    3. She reads the Forbes report, listens toWall Street Week, converses daily withher stockbroker, reads ShirleyMacLaine's books with ease—allkinds of things I can't begin to under-stand. Yet some of my friends tell methey u

This just demonstrates how you really can't judge a book by its cover. Your ability to pronounce english words does not define your intelligence

It astonishes me how someone could be treated so differently just because their english is bad. I was aware of the criticism but it disgusts me that information like this could be withheld from somebody.

This was interesting to me because I have found its the same with me and my family. There are definitely different versions of english being used when I talk to my mother's side of my family vs my father's side.

    1. Kohn argues that questioning is how students learn best, and challenges the old school learning model, where “Students are expected to do whatever they’re told, to accommodate themselves to a curriculum that was created by adults who never met them” (3).

I strongly agree with this. Asking questions allows us to expand our knowledge and grow off on another. Although it has great benefits, many students still fear speaking out.

    2. where learning is not just about reading information and memorizing it, but where what you get out of this text largely depends on the energy you put back into it through our Discussion Forums, annotation prompts and further conversations ‘in the margins’ using hypothes.is.

I like how we are being provided with other resources and activities to engage in to keep us focused and provide more information.

    1. Like all trips, this book will have a beginning and an end, with a middle that will provide many insights and stories from our teaching that are hopefully memorable because they relate to your own experience. In fact, one premise of this book is that all meaningful reading and writing is personally motivated in some way: motivated by your connections, motivated by your passions and interests as students.

This tells students that teachers understand and helps hold their attention by empathizing.

    1. Openness, Flexibility: Prepare your mindset to be flexible and open to new reading and writing situations in college; reinforce the growth mindset model and prepare students with strategies to control their reading and writing growth

This tells us that we will be learning in different ways from before and how to expand on our own knowledge

This quote shows how you as a teacher can empathize with a student's schedule by accepting late work, while also valuing accountability and honesty by emailing and owning up to it.
