    1. It is about what we believe and what we stand for as Americans. There is a religious war going on in this country

I feel like everything this guy is saying is exaggerated. Shouldn't religion be a personal belief? Not forced upon you from the government? If America is the home of the free, shouldn't there be freedom to choose your religion?

    2. we stand against putting our wives and daughters and sisters into combat units of the United States Army.

What about the women that WANT to join? I understand the point of view but shouldn't it be a choice whether or not they can join rather than flat out denying them from joining?

    3. amoral idea that gay and lesbian couples should have the same standing in law as married men and women.

so are lesbian and gay men not men and women? are they not a part of the human race? are they completely separate from men and women?

    4. At its top is unrestricted abortion on demand.

When people are against abortion I do not think they take everything into consideration. When people make statements like this "unrestricted abortion" it leads me to believe that they think women go ad get an abortion every month. What about the cases of unplanned and teenage pregnancy, what about rape? I think people care too much about pushing their religion and their views on other people than taking care of themselves.

    5. It’s not the kind of change America wants

is he stating this on his behalf or Americas? How can he speak for the majority. I think it is super frustrating knowing that people do not want to give the lgbtq community rights when just because they do not agree who they are attracted to.

    1. In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.

This is in response to the New Deal. The government had too much control over the citizens. The people wanted their freedom back

    1. But after listening to the American people I have been reminded again that all the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America.

I know this speech is relating to confidence, but could this quote be applied to todays society? all the legislation cant fix American unless we fix our point of view and hate first? We cant have confidence until we feel secure with one other first and that cannot be achieved unless the hate for one another is gone.

    1. And to this day I haven’t forgotten.

This war was traumatic for these people at war, I couldn't imagine what it was like for the innocent people who were affected by it living in Vietnam at this time.

    2. there’s no luck in war at all. I don’t believe there’s luck, you know. Just God’s grace and those men that were — those men that we lost, I understand it now — I didn’t understand then — because I even pleaded with God during my time that I was there — somewhere down the road I did — I yelled out to God

I could not imagine what they went through in Vietnam. The amount of bombs and bloodshed these people had to endure. After learning about the reason behind why the war started defiantly makes you wonder why we were there to begin with.

    1. There is no civil rights movement to speak for women, as there has been for Negroes and other victims of discrimination. The National Organization for Women must therefore begin to speak.

This is a very powerful statement for that time. This observation is absolutely true and we know that women have been oppressed for a vey long time, it makes me happy to know that in todays society we have organizations and young generations to fight for not only women but also other oppressed groups such as the lgbt community.

    2. believe that the time has come for a new movement toward true equality for all women in America

We wanted equality for women then and we are still fighting for equality now. It is interesting to learn over the years the progress we have made and to see today what more we can do to be equal.

    1. Open your polling places to all your people. Allow men and women to register and vote whatever the color of their skin. Extend the rights of citizenship to every citizen of this land.

it is hard to believe that this wasn't already a given to the people. The fact that women and people of color had to fight for their rights to vote is disheartening. In todays when we think of voting rights we think that everyone can vote and express their opinion. I couldn't imagine living at a time where that wasn't a given right. I defiantly am grateful for the women and other people of the past who have fought for the future.

    2. They never seemed to know why people disliked them

I couldn't even imagine as a child growing up at a time like this. The racial tension that was there at the time that was placed upon these children who did not have another option rather than just accept the fact that they were being discriminated against without any answers to why.

    1. The State of Texas would have us hold that there are only two classes–white and Negro–within the contemplation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

does this mean that any other race that is not white would fall under negro? or just not even be recognized in the state of Texas at that time?

    1. Today, education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments. Compulsory school attendance laws and the great expenditures for education both demonstrate our recognition of the importance of education to our democratic society. It is required in the performance of our most basic public responsibilities, even service in the armed forces. It is the very foundation of good citizenship.

i completely agree with this statement. I think education is the most important thing a person can have. Things can be taken away from you in life but your education and what you have learned can never be taken away from you.

    2. Plessy v. Ferguson that the doctrine of “separate but equal” was constitutional

separate but equal is not equal. Having to be put separated in the first place shows that the the groups are not on the same level.

    1. that they put the average man’s property and the average man’s life in pawn to the mercenaries of dynastic power; that they regimented the people.

aren't they still doing this with the government? What does it truly mean to be free? The government still takes control of the average mans property whether it be through taxes or another, they still take control of the average mans life and they regimented the lives of the people, although they label it as "democracy" saying we have a voice, but do we really?

    2. The age of machinery, of railroads; of steam and electricity; the telegraph and the radio; mass production, mass distribution—all of these combined to bring forward a new civilization and with it a new problem for those who sought to remain free.

this quote is a really good description of what it is like to feel trapped and suppressed by everyday society and the new technology. This could even be compared to today's society of what it is like to feel ball and chained to your phone or other new technology.

    1. and it is for this purpose, that we are asking you to join our land and to do the best you can to help us to bring about an emancipated race.

all they are asking for here is to be equal to the white man, they have the same bones and blood, they are all human, why be denied rights?

    2. If anything praiseworthy is to be done, it must be done through unity, and it is for that reason that the Universal Negro Improvement Association calls upon every Negro in the United States to rally to this standard. We want to unite the Negro race in this country.

I think uniting together is a great way to keep their hopes and spirits strong. Individually they may not seem as much as a threat, but an organized group would surely make the white people at that time very uncomfortable.

    1. That we believe the home is the foundation of the State; we believe in the sanctity of the marriage relation; and, furthermore, we believe that woman’s ballot will strengthen the power of the home,

She is making a fair argument that I think the men of the government did not want not believe. If the basis of the american dream is having a home and children, then having a mother to raise the home and children is also part of the dream. This means that the women are an equal part in America and should be treated as such.

    2. In most of our states, these classes are children, aliens, idiots, lunatics, criminals and women.

the rights for some of these groups may be more advantageous than another, never the less they are still being discriminated against. It is completely unfair to deny rights to others simple because they are not white

    3. t is fair and right that the people who must obey the laws should have a voice in choosing the law-makers,

this is right in every way. women should be able to have a say in the rules that are governing them, especially rules and laws that affect them directly such as birth rights. No man should be able to make a law that concerns the rights of women's freedom.

    1. that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died.

wow, the speak of the Philippines as a little kid. We didn't know what to do with them so i guess well just take over them entirely because they cant fend for themselves. It is such a burden being so great that we must make them civilized just like us instead of leaving them be. I cant imagine how different the Philippines would be if the US did end up giving the islands to the French or Spanish.

    1. A select committee of Congress, after investigating the question and taking testimony in California, reported in favor of Chinese exclusion, and that policy has been regarded ever since as a peaceful preventive of serious disorders affecting the body politic which would have inevitably ensued had the National Legislature failed to protect the white population of the country. …

this act is considered a peaceful preventive?? failed to protect the white population?? The ignorance back then of how offensive the things they were doing is quite astonishing. The fact that they created an act to exclude and not protect the Chinese, Literally called CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT, and they are offended because the majority of the population was not protected from jobs that the chinese were taking because white people didn't want to do them.

    2. Chinese exclusion has been regarded in diplomatic circles and elsewhere as the settled policy of the country.

what he's saying by this is that, this was it. This was the settled view on Chinese exclusion, no ifs, ands, or butts. This should stay the same way, its worked before why not keep it.

    1. As talked about in class, this political cartoon is a prime example of how the united states views "undeveloped" countries. They have moved past the black community and you can see him looking over trying to over hear as his is doing manual labor. The Chinese boy isn't even in the class room, thats how far out from getting civilized the US thinks of them. The natives are reading a book upside down, symbolizing as long as they are trying to become better and assimilate, they will never be white. The new countries are being taught how to be like the US and the mainly white US states/territories in the back are keeping their had down and not saying anything, minding their own business.

    1. Take up the White Man’s burden— Send forth the best ye breed— Go send your sons to exile To serve your captives’ need To wait in heavy harness On fluttered folk and wild— Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half devil and half child

So its the White mans burden, his responsibility, to take the half devil half child filipino people and make them civilized, just as they did with the native americans. This is great example of how the white people thought they were superior to other races just because they have different cultures.

    1. reign of the “unwritten law,” no colored man, no matter what his reputation, is safe from lynching if a white woman, no matter what her standing or motive, cares to charge him with insult or assault.

This is taking away the rights that the Black community has earned (also deserves) since the emancipation. It is unjust to not give them a trial, it goes against the constitution and basic human rights. The fact that one white woman can charge a man for a crime he might not have committed it could get a black man lynched is messed up because if a black women were to accuse a white man, the black women would probably be the one to get in trouble or killed.

    1. to secure the future of our children, to maintain and develop our racial heritage in our own, white, Protestant, American way, without interference. . . .

Their ideology is not only within their generation but they want to pass it down to their children and teach their children to be racist and believe white is the only way to be American. It makes me wonder if it s the education levels that are nit high enough for these people to see this is wring or just a lack of morals or sense of compassion. Not only a sense of compassion for the community that are attacking but for the poor children that will have to be raised by such hateful people.

    2. The races and stocks of men are as distinct as breeds of animals, and every boy knows that if one tries to train a bulldog to herd sheep, he has in the end neither a good bulldog nor a good collie.

So now theres no longer a human race, but rather they see different races as completely other species?? It is disturbing to know that is was a part of our history and ideas behind this klan still exist today. The fact the science has no role in this, ya know with the human body, the skeletal system or anything that proves we are one race is taken into consideration. This just demonstrates how the racial division causes them to have the feeling of superiority.

    1. using the remnants of intelligence that remained, and helped by a wise friend, I cast the noted specialist’s advice to the winds and went to work again–work, the normal life of every human being; work, in which is joy and growth and service,

I kind of think her writing is humorous. It seems like she is joking about having left over intelligence, and then she caste the doctors orders to the win clearly shows that she doesn't care for his authority. She is saying that being a woman and working is apart of everyday normal life and she should be treated as such rather than being forced into domestic work which drove more crazy than what she was already feeling.

    2. to which a still-good physique responded so promptly that he concluded there was nothing much the matter with me, and sent me home with solemn advice to “live as domestic a life as far as possible,” to “have but two hours’ intellectual life a day,” and “never to touch pen, brush, or pencil again” as long as I lived. This was in 1887.

to compare modern medicine back then to what is it today is such a drastic difference. It is clear she is probably just suffering from stress, stress can still cause harm to her body. But the fact that the doctor told her to live a domestic life and not be creative shows what the male dominant society thought of women at that time.

    1. and if the nation has expanded, it has met other growing peoples whom it has conquered.

I think they need to exaggerate the word conquered. There was not a a fair fight between them, the natives could have lived in peace with the settlers, the settlers are the ones who forcefully through them out by using methods of weapons, starvation, and much more.

    2. Up to and including 1880 the country had a frontier of settlement, but at present the unsettled area has been so broken into by isolated bodies of settlement that there can hardly be said to be a frontier line.

Is he saying that the native americans were isolated bodies? He cant even say they they were humans??? Just bodies as if referred to as animals.

    1. I know that my race must change. We cannot hold our own with the white men as we are. We only ask an even chance to live as other men live. We ask to be recognized as men

Wow, the fact they cant even accept themselves and see the need change to adapt to the environment is shocking. They ask for the same rights and punishments but as we know that is not the case. In our history books growing up, they never taught us the real story of how the natives were moved, how they were treated, how they were assimilated. Only that the white settlers came in and took over.

    2. Treat all men alike

The need for equality back then is just as dire as it is today. it is crazy to see some of these events in history and be able to compare them today. Because of their color and their culture they are seen as less, they white men believe they can just take over because they fell entitled to the land even thought the natives were there first. I think the miscommunication between them as well makes the white men feel as if they can take advantage more because they do not speak english.

    3. Words do not pay for my dead people.

I think this is a very strong quote. I think this is true and still relevant to today. The government went back on their word but is that even a surprise compared to all the other things they went back on their word on before? It is so sad that because of the government and the general that was sent out after them, a majority of his tribe have died, and for what? So the new settlers could take their land.

    1. The great desire of my life now is to give my children an education, and have them form virtuous habits.

I think quote is not only describing his wishes but wishes of most of the former slaves. An education for their family and them selves. The best investment you can make is in yourself. They can take away property and rights but they cannot take away your intelligence. I think all former slaves want to start off right in the "new world" and create a better life for their families and have them grow up in a way that is completely different from their past lives. More and more opportunities are opening up for them, so why would they want to go back to the place that enslaved them to begin with?

    2. If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past, we can have little faith in your promises in the future. We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense.

I love how now that they are free they have the courage to stand up to the people who once abused them. They ability to defended their dignity against one who didn't even seen them as a person. I think it is also interesting to see how much religion is tied in at this time. Using the Lord as almost a guilt for the old slave owner really ties at the pathos of the reader. It is only fair to get reimbursed for the time they put in. I also agree with Amaya that it is smart of him to negotiate his wages and demands with the master in order to not be taken advantage of again.

    3. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin’s to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living

This quote shows how dedicated the Master was to the confederate side as he killed a union member because he disagreed with their views. I think its shocking the Master had the audacity to ask him to com back after wanting to shoot him as well. I personally would not feel comfortable going back to a person who once raised a gun at me. At the end when he says i'm glad you're still alive shows how Jourdan has been able to forgive and move on. I am sure many owners have done much worse to their former slaves and probably still asked them to com back. What I want to know is why the old masters want their old slaves back? Is it the quality of work they put in or the fact they the wont find anyone else? Or maybe they miss the company? I have no idea.

    1. to pay the fine and costs imposed, such person shall be hired out by the sheriff or other officer, at public outcry, to any white person who will pay said fine and all costs and take such convict for the shortest time.

This quote is basically saying that if someone were unable to pay their fines for a conviction, they could be "hired out" to any white person to work for them to pay off the fines. This sounds to me like another way for the government to sneak slavery back into society in a legal way. I guess this is almost like community service today. After being convicted of a crime sometimes you are order to do so many hours of community service as well as a fine. Today community service isn't seen as a form of slavery but if you really think about it, it could have been derived from this.

    2. required all freedmen to carry papers proving they had means of employment. If they had no proof, they could be arrested, fined, or even re-enslaved and leased out to their former master.

It is shocking that even after all they have been through to be free, they could still be arrested and ENSLAVED?? if they didn't have a job. That is ridiculous that its what it takes to set them back from what they were fighting for. It can be compared to todays immigration system, that if undocumented people are arrested or caught without papers they can be sent back to their home country. Different penalties, however, the same concept of a necessity for documentation.

    1. Now, they are universally acknowledged. May we not therefore look with confidence to the ultimate universal acknowledgment of the truths upon which our system rests?

It seems as if they are comparing their want of Africans being enslaved to a universal truth in science? Are they comparing science which is a matter of experiments and evidence to a belief or moral issue? I don't see how these two could be compared.

    2. The prevailing ideas entertained by him and most of the leading statesmen at the time of the formation of the old Constitution were, that the enslavement of the African was in violation of the laws of nature; that it was wrong in principle, socially, morally and politically

He's acknowledging that these ideas are wrong stated by the Union but he continues throughout this article that they believe they have not violated the law of nature by having africans enslaved, instead this is what the government wanted originally so thats the way it should stay.

    3. They assume that the negro is equal, and hence conclude that he is entitled to equal privileges and rights, with the white man….

Its crazy to see that these hateful words being documented. If a politician or military person were to say something like this today, there would be an uproar. It is shocking to me that so many people were fine with statements like this of their era. It really shows how we have progressed since this time.

    4. agitating questions relating to our peculiar institutions-African slavery as it exists among us-the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.

So are they stating that African slavery is the cause for the revolution? If so, then we can argue that the Civil War was primarily about slavery rather than freedom and rights being taken away. The confederates wanted slaves and they were going to do anything it takes to keep them, including war.

    5. Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and moral condition. [Applause.]

This quote is stating the main point of the argument. As slavery was not necessarily the main reason for the civil war, it was a major part of it. This quote depicts their viewpoint on the subject. They clearly state that they believe that black people were not equal to the whites. They believe that their foundation is based upon being superior and almost having it as a class issue. They believe they are entitled to their property which is why they are leaving the Union.

    6. This quote is depicting the main argument for the confederate side. It basically is describing their viewpoint on slavery and they see them as property that they are entailed to rather than people. This is one of the reasons why the confederate states wanted to separate from the union. Their "cornerstones" were that of almost a class status. If you owned slaves it showed that you had money and property and they didn't want that right being taken away from them.
