    1. After a 148-day strike, Hollywood screenwriters secured significant guardrails against the use of artificial intelligence in one of the first major labor battles over generative AI in the workplace.

This is the first time I've heard about this and I do have to say that after reading articles like, AI has really started to bec0me an issue for lots of people even though it should be used in a way to help society but also kept under control as AI can also be very problematic to society.

    1. On Monday, however, he officially joined a growing chorus of critics who say those companies are racing toward danger with their aggressive campaign to create products based on generative artificial intelligence, the technology that powers popular chatbots like ChatGPT.

It's really interesting to hear that now companies are starting to make products to support AI and the technology it empowers as technology advances. While they are doing this, I think they should also create preventive strategies as well to ensure the safety of AI and the products they’re developing, in order to prevent any technological issues from arising and affecting their customers as well.

    1. The lawsuit is the latest volley in the ongoing legal struggle between the creators of AI art generators and rights-holders.

This is very interesting to read about, mainly because nowadays people can't really tell what AI generated or someone's actual work. Reading about AI related lawsuits is pretty intriguing as technology is becoming smarter each year to the point where it can do human tasks without any issues.

    1. But it is an example of just how good this technology is becoming, to the point that it can even trick people who are usually more discerning about spreading misinformation online.

I believe that the more technology advances, then the easier the spread of misinformation can become. Especially, when AI is becoming more and more powerful. I have tried making some images with AI generated softwares and not gonna lie its very interesting to play around with.

    1. Disabled people are very intelligent and provide lots of bright ideas that impact to our society. Everyday they face battles in regards to their own life and find ways to help themselves to get through times. Our society should heavily focus on curing disability and help those in need. As technology is advancing, this should be a priority as there could be possible ways to find a cure.

    1. The New York Times demonstrated this in 2019, when they tweeted “Remember Google Glass? Stanford University researchers are exploring whether it can help teach autistic children to make eye contact and recognize emotions.”[1]

This is something I'm interested in learning more about. Its good to hear that latest inventions are being further researched and see the possibilities of helping autistic children to become more socially present, along with emotionally aware. Lots of companies are now coming out with technological glasses and should further experiment how it can help disable people and make a tremendous change in our society.

    1. Biocitizenship is part of a family of concepts that sets out to understand the rights and responsibilities that accompany enhanced techniques for intervening in life itself

This is actually the first time I have heard of the word "Biocitizenship" and gave me a clear understanding of what the word is. In response to informed consent, it is very important to get consent and letting other be informed as it gives them the right to decide whether they want their data being collected or not. Almost everywhere we go whether thats searching online, going to the doctors office, etc. people are informed about their data collection and are given the consent to share it or not.

    1. We refuse to be disciplined by data, devices, and practices that seek to shape and normalize racialized, gendered, and differently-abled bodies in ways that make us available to be tracked, monitored, and surveilled. We commit to taking back control over the ways we behave, live, and engage with data and its technologies.

It's interesting to think about how one day data collection can takeover the world by AI and cause a great threat to our society. The government should start finding ways to keep data collection and privacy under control before it gets to a point where it's uncontrollable and change ways on how we engage with technology.

    1. Surveillance capitalism is what happened when US democracy stood down. Two decades later, it fails any reasonable test of responsible global stewardship of digital information and communications.

Just reading the first part of the abstract gave me a clear understanding about what this article would be about and how surveillance capitalism can be a big threat to our nation. As data collection is becoming bigger and bigger, it is also becoming more dangerous and not regulating privacy for people when using various social media platforms.

    1. The past 3 years of work in NLP have been characterized by the development and deployment of ever larger language models, especially for English.

After reading the first line, I'm not surprised at all regarding the development and deployment of larger language models. I assume that there will be even more larger models that will be used as AI advances more and more each year to break language barriers and be able to provide efficiency for languages like English. Off course, there will be risks towards developing bigger models, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons overall.

    1. In the wake of newly released models such as Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT, generative AI has become a 'hot topic' for technologists, investors, policymakers and for society at large.

This is very true as lately, platforms as stable diffusion and chatGPT have been the hot topic along with the advancement of AI itself. Overtime, I believe there will be more AI generated platforms that will that will be useful for data scientists along with society as a whole. AI sooner rather than later, will be used to carry out tasks replacing humans as it will become more powerful and dependent upon.

    1. In an online world, that story about you lives forever. The tipsy photograph of you at the college football game?

This article is a great example of how technology can hold many sensitive informations about people that shouldn't be up there if people were to find about about it. Personally, I wouldn't like if there were sensitive information about me on the web with any consent. Journalists should do a better job on removing unwanted content and information thats is very personal and can potentially affect someone's life.

    1. The red-headed man wearing what looks like the ultimate Christmas sweater walks up to the camera. A yellow quadrant surrounds him. Facial recognition software immediately identifies the man as … a giraffe?

After reading the first part of this article, it was quite funny to hear about how facial recognition has identify the red-headed man wearing a red sweater and is identified as a giraffe. This tells you that even facial recognitions can not be trustworthy all the time and can lead to providing false information. The creators of facial recognition devices definitely need to work on making it more accurate and preventing it from providing false information.

    1. Police have solved hundreds of cold cases using open-source DNA platforms. But at what cost?

This is the first time I have heard about how police are starting to use DNA platform to solve cases. Even though there could be pros to this, the cons can include revealing very sensitive information that can intrude privacy regarding information to their overall health. This is quite interesting to read about and curious on whether the police will start using similar platform to solve complex cases.

    1. In February, the city of Toronto announced plans for a new development along its waterfront. They read like a wish list for any passionate urbanist: 800 affordable apartments, a two-acre forest, a rooftop farm, a new arts venue focused on indigenous culture, and a pledge to be zero-carbon.

This would be an interesting initiative to take in order to pledge to be a zero carbon environment. As the advancement of technology continues, cities like Toronto are using technology to it's advantage in promoting a safer carbon free environment to prevent the consequences of pollution. Building more apartments and arts venue focused on indigenous culture would be a great initiative to take for the city of Toronto and am sure everyone would support that.

    1. Catlett dreamed of something bigger: a vast network of low-cost sensors that could measure everything from the urban heat island to noise pollution.

After reading about this, this a great idea to consider as building a vast network of low cost sensors that could measure pollution can be very beneficial, as it can help with addressing issues regarding pollution and coming up with solutions on how we can make our the environment around us less polluted.

    1. Apps like Nextdoor, Citizen, and Amazon Ring’s Neighbors — all of which allow users to view local crime in real time and discuss it with people nearby — are some of the most downloaded social and news apps in the US, according to rankings from the App Store and Google Play.

As technology is advancing overtime, apps like the ones mentioned will become very useful and allow residents to gain access to more apps that can help residents be safer and prevent crime from happening in their area. Using technology to take precautionary measures is a good thing to do in order to stay up to date and keeping their families secure and safe at all times.

    1. San Francisco is leading the pack, with an income gap of almost half a million dollars between the richest and the poorest twenty percent of residents.

This statement is very true as California, specifically San Francisco is one of the of the most expensive places to live in the United States. When I once went to San Fran, I could tell the income between the richest and poorest as some people aren't capable enough to settle down and live a wealthy lifestyle there. Prices for gas, food, etc. is above the average price compared to Maryland or any other state.

    1. After years of conducting ethnographic work in China from living with migrants to working as a street vendor and living in internet cafés, I saw lots of indicators that led me to conclude that low-income consumers were ready to pay for more expensive smartphones.

In the early 2000s, many low-income workers couldn't afford very expensive technologies as their wage wasn't able to fully cover it. I think during that time, it would've been better for Nokia to also consider selling to people with low income consumers so that they can build a better reputation for their company and not only focus on high income consumers. This would've lead to better reputation along with more sales and revenue if all was included and available.

    1. It collects news reports about events around the world and parses the news reports for actors, events, and geography with the aim of providing a comprehensive set of data for researchers, governments, and civil society..d-undefined, .lh-undefined { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2) !important; }1nyah bean

It's very interesting reading about GDELT as it is a project regarding how data is being collected and analyzed in order to parse them all together and build an overall report to be used for research purposes. Nowadays, there are many methods and ways where scientists gather all typed of data and be able to parse them into small bits instead of reading all the data individually which is very cool to know.

    1. Williams recognized as much when asked by Glamour magazine about the fact that she had to demand that her medical team perform additional tests in order to diagnose her own postnatal complications—and because she was Serena Williams, twenty-three-time grand slam champion, they complied.11 “If I wasn’t who I am, it could have been me,” she told Glamour, referring to the fact that the privilege she experienced as a tennis star intersected with the oppression she experienced as a Black woman, enabling her to avoid becoming a statistic herself.d-undefined, .lh-undefined { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2) !important; }. As Williams asserted, “that’s not fair.”.d-undefined, .lh-undefined { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2) !important; }2Sarah Wu, Julia Brous12

Serena Williams uses herself as an example of how life would be different for her if she wasn't a famous tennis players and how she would've been a victim of dealing with the unjust system.

    1. The disability justice movement expands on this groundwork, prioritizing the experiences, needs, and leadership of disabled people of color, queer, undocumented, and poor disabled people—many of whom have limited access to the legal resources and protections won by the rights movement.

This movement is great to be part of as it targets issues regarding people of color and the limited resources they have access to that can lead to their lives improving over time and making an impact in the community.

    1. But additional research by information studies scholar Rena Bivens has shown that below the surface, Facebook continues to resolve users’ genders into a binary: either “male” or “female.”15 Evidently, this decision was made so that Facebook could allow its primary clients—advertisers—to more easily market to one gender or the other.

This is a very interesting point to come across as facebook uses this strategy to make marketing easier for them and to only target two types of genders. Facebook is known for being involved in various recent issues that have been leading them in losing followers due not not targeting those issues.

    1. These modules will give you the readings and assignments for each week.

Will there be any extra credit opportunities?

Will any lowest grade of assignments be dropped?

Will the workload be a lot in this class?

    1. Consequently, big data continues to suffer from Bblind spots and problems of representativeness, precisely because [they] cannot account for those who participate in the social world in ways that do not register as `digital signals^

I found this quite interesting as in today's society, the data that are being used on a large scale is not always true as there can also be false data being claimed and are not accounted at for those who have spread this misleading information to the general public.
