. And indeed nothing is easier for a man who has, as the phrase goes, “followed the sea” with reverence and affection, than to evoke the great spirit of the past upon the lower reaches of the Thames. The tidal current runs to and fro in its unceasing service, crowded with memories of men and ships it had borne to the rest of home or to the battles of the sea.
These men have an underlying motivation for why they went out to sea. We have yet to find out what that motivation is, but they have a strong desire to rise to the challenge and achieve their goal.

We felt meditative, and fit for nothing but placid staring.
This made me laugh, I'm unsure why. I think the wording may have been an amusing way to explain how these group of men spent so much time together that they have become used to each other's company.
