It seem as if he was putting blessings on the plantation. I just wonder what it fully means.

    1. Here in America, in the few days since Emancipation, the black man's turning hither and thither in hesitant and doubtful striving has often made his very strength to lose effectiveness, to seem like absence of power, like weakness. And yet it is not weakness,--it is the contradiction of double aims. The double-aimed struggle of the black artisan--on the one hand to escape white contempt for a nation of mere hewers of wood and drawers

It seems as if he saying that other may not have faith or think the black man is weak minded. I think he's saying that the white man has so much control and power that it makes it hard to escape from this world.

    1. During the slave regime, the Southern white man owned the Negro body and soul

This is a powerful sentence so simple but complex. This is a very true statement. The whites have power and control over the blacks. They couldn't' do what they want unless the white man says so.

    1. You sang not deeds of heroes or of kings; No chant of bloody war, no exulting pean Of arms-won triumphs; but your humble strings

This poem is kind of all over the place. It seems as if he is saying that there music is humble not that war music or you know something bad it about to happen music.

    1. Of lesser souls, whose eyes have not seen Death, Nor learned to hold their lives but as a breath— But—I must sit and sew.

It's like she is saying that she is sewing her pain away. All this war and want the men go through, it seems as sewing takes her mind of things.

    1. And now—unwittingly, you've made me dreamOf violets, and my soul's forgotten gleam.

She seems to love violets and all the things it reminds her of. Saying how god created a beautiful flower.

    1. n writing as I have done, I am well aware that I have invited criticism; but before the critic judges harshly, let my explanation be carefully read and weighed

I like how she somewhat gives a heads up about her writing. She know her words may seem harsh, but she's saying let me explain it to you first.

    1. it would have been more pleasant to me to have been silent about my own history.

It seems as if she wants to keep her personal life to herself. The other woman we read about they talk about their life and the struggles they went to.

    1. So it should, but amidst the general clamor in the contest for ascendancy, may you not lose sight of this important point

I guess he is saying she must stay focus on the point and not to get distracted by the noise and others.

    1. I cannot say but I loved the julep as well as any of them, and during prayer was always careful to seat myself close to the table where it stood, so as to help myself when they were all busily engaged in their devotions. By the time prayer was over, I was about as happy as any of them.

The mint julep is an alcoholic drink. If he is turning to that drink to make him happy then he is not comfortable were he is at. It's like the mint julep is helping him forget about all his problems, and he says how gets as happy as them after he drinks it.

    1. A single word from Page 46 the white men was enough--against all our wishes, prayers, and entreaties--to sunder forever the dearest friends, dearest kindred, and strongest ties known to human beings.

This is horrific that he says that, like once the Master speaks thats what has to be done. It's like nothing can be done without the Masters approval or the the white man as he says.

    2. that slaveholders have ordained, and by law established, that the children of slave women shall in all cases follow the condition of their Page 4 mothers;

Is it saying that since the mother is a slave that the child wont have freedom? the child as well has to be a slave, just because there mother was.

    1.  I know of such cases; and it is worthy of remark that such slaves invariably suffer greater hardships, and have more to contend with, than others. They are, in the first place, a constant offence to their mistress

You can somewhat see his hatred towards slavery in this sentence. He know that slaves suffered and went through a lot. It also seem like he was saying they are a disappointment or disappointing their mistress.

    1. \\'ert' staked upon that Jt.·s1?eratc Slrl c. . , , \\'hich drcncht.·d this land tor sen~n lo~g) ears \,\.ith blood of men. and \\omen's tears~ \\'hen black and white fou~ht side by s1<.l

They fought for so long to have their land that it was hurting and tearing down others. Women where loosing their husbands, brothers, friends and etc. Also it seems like slavery was coming to and end, because he says during this time black and whites fought together.

    1. During the Civil War, despite advancing age and infirmities brought on by the rigors of slavery and the antislavery struggle, Truth worked tirelessly on several civil rights fronts.

It seem as if she fought for everything regardless of what condition she was in. She put herself in a position to help her people and she was going to make that happen.

    1. What mind is there that does not shrink from its direful effects?

I think he is trying to bash the word slavery or basically saying you think of that word just makes you feel some type of way. He compares it to being "direful" meaning extremely bad or dreadful.

    1. but there must be a willingness on our part, for GOD to do these things for us, for we may be assured that he will not take us by the hairs of our head against our will and desire, and drag us from our very, mean, low and abject condition.

It seems as if he was saying that if we do right by god he won't punish us. That we have to be willing to do those things in order to receive the things we want from god.

    1. the system of slavery, which the African American writer treats as the source of the depravity and misery that infect the minds and hearts of all,

He speaks on how slavery is depravity which means it is a wicked act that corrupts people feelings. I believe thats why he used misery as well in the sentence, saying that it has and effect on the mind and heart. In cases it does mess with people feelings and thoughts. Slavery had a big impact on people lives.

    1. hia. On the road he came into contact not only with Methodist preachers but also those belonging to Baptist and other sects, and he tucked away in his memory things that later would prove to be useful to him as an "African minister.

It was great to have some one in the community to keep the African Americans together. Allen changed people life and his life as well was changed. He found ways to make things better in there community. Him viewing other preachers gave him insight on what to do for his people.

    1. through media of print and performative transmission, Allen could take his place as an evangelical author valuable to the revival movements of the rural west even as he struggled to build his authority in the urban east.

I felt that he knew this would uplift African Americans with his different text. It seems that text, rituals, and other empowering affects help them come together as one.

    1. Famine which had usurped the place of plenty and happiness,

I know famine means scarcity of food or a shortage. I guess what was being said that "Famine" had took over the place and affected the people happiness.

    1. Pagan land

She talks about her land being a "Pagan Land". Africa did not practice Christianity. It was like she was saying it in a sarcastic way. Pagan means one who does not follow a religion, and much more.

    1. The Indians did in ambush lay, Some very valiant men to slay, The names of whom I'll not leave out.

I feel like this poem is talking about the significant people that died. I am guessing that is why the author stated this before he stated all the different people dying.

    1. My father had three wives. Polygamy was not uncommon in that country, especially among the rich, as every man was allowed to keep as many wives as he could maintain

Polygamy is the practice of maintaining more than one wife or husband. I wonder what was the need of having that many spouses back then or what did you gain from that? I know mainly the wealthy people practiced polygamy, because they had enough money to up keep their wife needs. Comparing it to this generation you would be looke at crazy if you had more than one wife.
