    1. Connected learning is realized when a young person is able to pursue a personal interest or passion with the support of friends and caring adults, and is in turn able to link this learning and interest to academic achievement, career success or civic engagement.

As teachers we aren't just responsible for relaying information to students. Teaching is so much more than sharing old, outdated textbook information, it is about engaging students and encouraging them to do well. We should be using every resource we have to ensure that they love what they are learning. It's only when they have a passion for what they are learning that they want to continue progressing and make a difference. When one student is showing their love for a subject, that passion is seen by all of the other students. Seeing love and encouragement from peers and teachers is what will keep them striving to learn.

    1. In their everyday exchanges with peers and friends, young people fluidly contribute, share and give feedback. Powered with possibilities made available by today’s social media, this peer culture can produce learning that’s engaging and powerful.

Through social media apps like Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram, teenagers today are more connected than ever before. Today's youth have the ability to stay in contact and become close to other people all over the world who are apart of different cultures, religions, and backgrounds. Now that students are able to know more about the places and people they are learning about, it has never been easier to keep them engaged.

    2. Connected Camps is a benefit corporation that offers virtual summer camps and afterschool programs in the game of Minecraft. High school and college Minecraft experts are trained to teach younger kids coding, engineering, game design, and digital citizenship. The programs mine the enthusiasm that kids have for the most popular game of all time, by building connections with mentors who share their interest and help them level up in high-tech skills.

Using games as popular as Minecraft to teach students is brilliant! Most of them would much rather be playing this game than doing their homework so finding a way to teach them important skills while playing will help them so much in the future.

    3. Traditional education is failing to engage many students as they enter their middle school, high school, and college years.

With traditional learning it is hard to become invested and understand different cultures from their perspective. Classes today can easily set up a video call to another country or a survivor of a historical moment in time. This way students can ask direct questions about the person's experience instead of reading from a boring, old textbook.

    4. Connected learning applies the best of the learning sciences to cutting-edge technologies in a networked world.

Connected learning is a way for students to help each other through the use of any resources they have. More and more ways are being developed for students to use to their advantage. Years ago students wouldn't have been able to share information through Google Docs which is a huge part of connected learning for current college and high school students.

    1. Knowing how to read, write, and participate in the digital world has become the 4th basic foundational skill next to the three Rs—reading, writing, and arithmetic—in a rapidly evolving, networked world.

The internet has become so powerful that we basically have to learn digital skills starting at a very young age or else we will be left behind.

    1. it’s easy to forget that laws, morals and rights still apply online.

Many people appear much braver behind their computer screens and forget that the people they are talking about and commenting on can have serious affects on the people who they are directed towards.

    2. Given how quickly and frequently our media world is evolving, developing and maintaining one’s digital literacy is a lifelong process.

Due to the internet constantly changing and millions of new people coming on everyday, we have to be aware of how we appear online. 10 years ago most companies didn't want their employees to have public social media accounts but now you practically have to have an online presence for an interviewer to see. For this reason we have to carefully remain conscious about what we are posting.

    3. “Digital literacy is as much a key part of learning about history and learning how to study history, and learning about science and learning how to study science, as it is about learning about ICT and learning the skills of using ICT. Indeed, possessing digital literacy is an important set of life skills to complement and extend the skills and knowledge already taught in school.”

Digital literacy has become so important to us as a society that now it is considered as an essential set of life skills. Just as the quote says, we use digital literacy to study everything in school because there is so much information on the internet. Even apart from history and science, anyone can practically learn about anything they want thanks to digital literacy.

    4. Globally, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) frames its benchmarks for digital literacy around six standards: creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration; research and information fluency; critical thinking, problem solving and decision making; digital citizenship; and technology operations and concepts.

The six standards that the ISTE uses to define digital literacy are great because it shows us that it is built on social and ethical reasoning and not just for technical skills. Digital literacy should also be about learning how to to effectively use our communication skills and even how to engage in political and societal issues in a considerate way when online.
