Cambridge's "Dictionary of Alchemical Imagery" asserts that Argent vivre is synonymous with mercury and must be combined with Sulfur to produce the philoshopher's stone. Interestingly, Sulfur is a popular snake repellent, so perhaps there is something about these two metals being oppositional that makes them more powerful together.
