    1. and 42 percent of young brown brothers and sisters live in poverty, and 51 percent of young black brothers and sisters live in poverty in the richest nation in the history of the world.

much higher for people of color

    2. Problem people become indistinguishable and interchangeable, which means that only one of them has to be asked to find out what all the rest of them think.

such an inaccurate way of thinking, I would hope education can change this but it seems like there is always someone who thinks this way

    1. can pile up

when the pandemic first started, I was new to online learning so unfortunately I ended up doing this and was left feeling very overwhelmed on sunday night when everything is due

    2. on top of their existing responsibilities

it's challenging to navigate such an unprecedented change in learning, and sometimes it just felt like instructors were piling on busy work to make up for the lack of class time together

    3. unequal playing field

I have wondered myself if testing is really as beneficial in an online setting. there are always ways to cheat, even in person, but online this is even easier. and for those of us who don't cheat, we are left with lower test scores than those who do, even though we may have actually learned more of the material

    4. side conversations.

although we shouldn't be doing this while the instructors are talking, it inevitably happens and this is how friendships can be formed. Being able to sit next to the same person, make jokes with them, and actually see them in person is the way we make social connections

    5. while it is easy to meet peers, sustained relationships have been harder to come by

I understand the intentions of responding to our peers on discussion posts, joining breakout rooms, etc. but I have not made any lasting relationships this way like I did just from talking to people while walking back from class to the dining hall.

    6. a lot to expect from anybody

a student has to be extremely motivated and self-disciplined to make this work, and it is a lot to expect from anybody. we are all human and we all struggle with this

    7. In the absence of a standard classroom, I’ve had to set more and more rules for myself. No attending lecture from bed or in pajamas. No eating while on a Zoom call, even if my camera’s off. No waking up at 8:59 a.m. for a lecture at 9:00 a.m.

these rules are easy to create, but for someone like me it is so difficult to enforce them from the comfort of home. in high school I would go to a library to do my homework for this exact reason, but there weren't any open at the beginning of the pandemic so this became impossible

    8. I didn’t even see the point of going to lectures

if all the reading is done outside of class, it can be difficult to see the point of going to a lecture just for a review of the material

    9. it wasn’t that easy

at one point in the semester I was looking for a new job so I kept my phone on and near me in case I got a call for an interview, but this added temptation to look on social media or play a game on my phone during class

    1. will be able to learn remotely

before COVID class participation was mandatory and a lot was missed out on if you couldn't attend, so the adaptations to a virtual setting make an education more accessible to those with other challenges or commitments

    2. what it means to be a person

by seeing the instructor in their home environment, possibly seeing kids or pets, we can think of them more as people instead of someone intimidating

    3. all we are seeing is each other's faces

no body language, no physical cues, a lot of what we know about our peers is learned this way or through things like their sense of fashion, which we can't see over zoom

    4. 300 students in her ECON 001 lectures, she got to know about 50 students very well and another 50 or so a little bit

that's not even half of her students, I know it's difficult to get to know everyone in large lectures but it would probably at least be easier in person

    5. bonded over having never been to Penn's campus or having a “normal” college experience.

nobody felt like they were alone in their experience, it created a sense of community

    1. Confirmation bias

this is a very damaging way of thinking even though we have all been guilty of it at some point. we can never learn if we only seek out information that we already think is true

    2. saving is like a choice between spending money today or giving it to a stranger years from now.

I really like how he phrases it because it demonstrates how difficult saving money can be. I don't know what I can use this money for in the future, but I do know what I can spend it on in the present
