    1. he engineers obviously weren’t going into the homes very much to see how these robots were used in practice, as you describe, they were quite detached from the realities of working in or living in a care home.

So how would they be able to truly come up with an effective solution to the problem that they have not seen themselves?

    2. ifting devices, mobility maids, monitoring systems, communication robots, and also toilet and bathing aides

Which one is the most beneficial for the elderly?

    3. I got a sense of how they were approaching care as a engineering problem

I think that for this issue specifically, a more personable and empathetic approach is necessary.

    1. “On the side of those who receive care, of course initially there will be psychological resistance.”

Why do we think older people will especially resist care from robots?

    2. Japan’s elderly

Japan has a very large elderly population and a smaller population of young people, which is what makes it so difficult to find enough people to take care of the elderly.

    3. include robots that can predict when patients might need to use the toilet.

This would be very helpful for older people who cannot control their bladder. When people have memory loss, they can forget that they have to use the bathroom, so maybe by having a robot remind them, it can help them slightly with their memory.

    1. "No. There wasn't any reason to. I don't think there's anything wrong with them. Even the diaphragm is in reasonable order. They might talk."

This response shows how unprepared they were for a situation like this. They didn't have a backup plan or any solutions in their minds, so now they are in a predicament.

    2. It was criminal, sending us out here with only one robot.

They are realizing that it was not a smart plan to rely on this robot alone.

    3. The photo-cell banks that alone stood between the full power of Mercury's monstrous sun and themselves were shot to hell. The only thing that could save them was selenium. The only thing that could get the selenium was Speedy. If Speedy didn't come back, no selenium. No selenium, no photo-cell banks. No photo-banks - well, death by slow broiling is one of the more unpleasant ways of being done in.

The lives of these people solely depended on this robot. This doesn't seem like a smart plan because they put everything on this one robot, and if the robot is malfunctioning, everything they are depending on goes down the drain.

    4. Mercury had long been the jinx world of the System, but this was drawing it rather strong-even for a jinx.

This blurb has a lot of jargon that is a little bit confusing. As readers, we aren't sure of what any of this means yet.

    1. I suppose they’re to vote. To drink beer. To order us about?

I feel like this section truly shows the control that these people have over the robots as well as the strength that these robots have. Hallemeier is clearly apprehensive about the idea of these robots being liberated because he doesn't know what they would be capable of with such powers.

    2. Another of them here has caught it. He began to smash up the statues and pictures in the drawing room; gnashed his teeth; foamed at the mouth. Worse than an animal.

This almost sounds like these robots are imitating rabid animals. Their knowledge allows them to recreate these actions that they have learned to absorb and understand.
