Every teacher has an approach to teaching, whether or not they are aware of it. Approaches fall along a continuum from traditional, teacher-centered instruction to more progressive, student-centered instruction.
I like this sentence because it reminds me how cool it is that every teacher is different and with that comes different approaches to teaching. I believe the more teachers a student has, the more they learn because they are constantly doing and thinking about things in different ways. It excited me to know that by the end of college I will take everything I have learned and construct it in a way that fits my own teaching philosophy directly influencing the way I teach. I hope to be a teacher who approaches education as less “traditional” and more “progressive: meaning drawing on the arts and my students' own interests to cultivate lessons they love, inspiring them to be lifelong learners.

Students meet dual learning objectives when they engage in the creative process to explore connections between an art form and another subject area to gain greater understanding in both. For example, students meet objectives in theater (characterization, stage composition, action, expression) and in social studies.
My dad was a theater teacher for elementary school and every year he put on a play called "The Decade Show." All third grade classes participated in the play. The play went over United States history from wars to rock n' roll and everything in between from the 50s to the present day. During this experience, students were able to meet learning standards in theater including characterization, action, expression, stage composition, etc. while also learning about events in U.S. history that have had a significant impact on our country. I was lucky enough to be in third grade while he was a theater teacher, so I have definitely experienced an Arts-Integrated Curriculum. Still to this day, I am still reminded of this play when a song that was in the play comes on the radio or history from a few decades ago is being explained. This shows that arts integration keeps a child engaged in the moment, but also helps their memory as they are more likely to remember the information being taught through something more fun such as the art form theater.
