      I would categorize Spent as a learning experience and a story, mostly because something so bleak is not a fun game to me, lol. It's an interactive branching story, and it's really well done! I ran out of money on day 6. Shouldn't have fixed my car.

      I have always heard similar things about the character-building aspects of sports, and I definitely agree that sports can teach participants a lot of valuable skills. But I haven't seen the same amount of respect paid to other sorts of "play" in general.

    2. Schools are currently still training autonomous problem-solvers, whereas as students enter the workplace, they are increasingly being asked to work inteams, drawing on different sets of expertise, and collaborating to solve problems.

      This means that the teachers themselves will also need to know how to not just be autonomous problem-solvers--I know that many teachers can feel siloed and alone in their content area.

      This is a fantastic (and lofty) goal

      This already seems like a complicated project to pull off, so I'm not sure how the facilitators would approach integrating more global engagement without getting overwhelmed.

      I so badly wanted to teach like this when I was a middle/high school English teacher, but I never saw anything similar in action and just didn't have the time and courage to figure out how to make happen. It sounds really cool.

      I feel like this will take a lot of effort and planning! We will have to make a lot of decisions up front so that each of us can work on our individual stories without stopping and asking questions constantly to stay on the same aesthetic thread

      This was an interesting read. I've never thought about learner agency being broken down into distinct parts like this. It's always encouraging to read things that make me feel more in control of my learning and life experience.

      Some learning can occur in the default learning state, though it's likely to be more superficial. I'm thinking of something that would require memorization or recall, like the Periodic Table. Though maybe that isn't learning, maybe it should just be its own category?

    1. By becoming effective storytellers themselves, they can learn to analyze the elements that compose a well-constructed persuasive story, and use it to derive their own meaning from media content.

      This is a great idea! It's much easier to see the "seams" on something when you have experience make something similar.

      I agree with many of the points in this section, but I also think about the fact that today we read many, many texts online without context. Perhaps we need practice reading something out of context and then diving deeper. Maybe an out of context close reading is just the jumping off point for something much more detailed.

      Jaws is fiction but sharks are real. Not as huge and vindictive as the Jaws shark, but still real animals that clearly exist. So watching a movie like Jaws before going to the ocean creates a more reasonable change in behavior than believing Slenderman exists because there is a website and other web stories, and then stabbing your friend to impress him.

      This speaks to why advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry. Create a story that transports people and makes them think they need your product.
