    1. When the school introduces and trains each child of society into membership within such a little community, saturating him with the spirit of service, and providing him with the instruments of effective self-direction, we shall have the deepest and best guarantee of a larger society which is worthy, lovely, and harmonious

I can't help but think that while every student deserves the best education possible and opportunities to explore their interests and develop their passions, that there are some people who are ok with just enough school to earn enough for bread and butter. Isn't this part of what makes society harmonious? If everyone were to aspire to be doctors or lawyers, who would occupy the cashier and waste management jobs that create a functioning society?

    2. this is somewhat remote and shadowy compared with the training of attention and of judgment that is acquired in having to do things with a real motive behind and a real outcome ahead

creating a "why" for students is so important in creating engagement and a purpose for the lesson and work ahead of them

    3. n all this there was continual training of observation, of ingenuity, constructive imagination, of logical thought, and of the sense of reality acquired through first-hand contact with actualities.

While the context around continual training may have shifted from participating in the process of making clothing, these processes have not changed. When students are hands-on in their learning, they are more engaged, creating a learning that will continue to develop and one that they will remember. I did an activity with my students at the beginning of the year where using only string and a rubber band, they had to take a stack of cups that were upside down and unstack them into a tower. Whenever we collaborate, many students bring this experience into our conversations in order to connect the work that we are doing.

    4. effort to meet the needs of the new society that is forming

This is such a powerful statement written in the past, that I don't always feel is being addressed in education or that support is not provided for teachers to be able to address the changes that are occurring in society.

    5. Only by being true to the full growth of all the individuals who make it up, can society by any chance be true to itself

This reminds me of when getting ready for take-off, they always say to put your oxygen mask on first. If you are out of air then you are not able to help others. If each individual is not supported in their growth, how can they support the rest of their community to be its best?

    6. his growth in the knowledge of geography and history

I find this interesting as growth in geography and history don't seem as big of an interest for teachers. These contents are often pushed to the side in order to carve more time for reading, writing, and mathematics.
