Starts with the demographic questions since they already previously stated they would ask them in the consent form. Typically demographic questions are last however since they already informed the reader about them, there will be no surprise to seeing them. Also, the demographic questions are very simple and broad. The researcher is only collecting the information needed and not asking in-depth questions. This is so they do not scare away the participant with too personal of questions.

    14. Given the above study description, do you agree to the terms of the survey and voluntarilyagree to perform this survey? *

Makes this question mandatory! Signing consent form is a must before doing survey

    15. For questions or comments about your rights as a participant in this study, please email the primaryinvestigator, Dr. Andrea Feldpausch-Parker at amparker@esf.edu. Alternatively, if you wish to contactanonymously, you can call the Syracuse University’s Institutional Review Board at (315. 443-3013.

Giving contact information, helps build bond with participant therefore they can ask any unsolved questions.

    16. Your participation in this research is voluntary, confidential, and you can choose to stop at any time. However unlikely, it is important to note that when submitting information over the internet, there isalways a risk of compromising privacy, confidentiality, and anonymity. Your confidentiality will bemaintained to the degree permitted by the technology being used. No guarantees can be maderegarding the potential for information entered online to be intercepted by third parties. All questionson the survey are optional, except your response to the following Informed Consent question. If youwish to participate and agree to the terms described here, select “Yes” to this question.

Gets into the legality of the survey. Sets a precedent that the survey is voluntary and participants do not have to answer every question. Also informs that the organization is not responsible if information gets stolen.

    17. You will be asked to provide your birth year, zip code of residence, and the first 4 letters of the name ofyour hometown to generate a unique user code associated with your responses. This information will beused to count the number of participants and to estimate the average number of surveys participantscomplete. Providing this information is completely voluntary and will not be available to anyone exceptthe primary investigators. Your name will not be associated with the responses you provide, or the datagenerated from them. You will also be asked to provide the coordinates of the location where youcompleted the survey. Coordinate information is important

This section relates to the demographic questions. Since people are hesitant to answer personal information, explaining why it is needed and that it is optional puts the participant at ease and makes them more likely to answer. Also allows the participant not to be surprised when asked about it in the survey.

    18. You may perform thissurvey as many times as you would like, but do not perform the survey more than once per day thesame location

Bolds this sentence because it is important information that a reader could easily miss.

    19. his research project asks you to complete an online survey using your personal smart phone or tabletat public-access streams or rivers in Central New York State. Participants have the freedom to choosewhere to perform the survey at any public stream or river location within the given study area. We askthat you do not complete the survey on private property, personally owned or otherwise, since theresearch team will perform follow-up water quality data collection at the locations of surveycompletion. It is expected that this survey will take 10-20 minutes to complete.

Explains the expectations and what to expect during the survey. Allows readers to understand what the survey entails and how to do it. (by stating online survey and do on public ground)

    20. Thank you again for your interest and participation.Welcome to the CREEQ Crew!

The purpose of these sentences was to reiterate the researchers appreciation but also to make the participant feel as though they are apart of the team. Being apart of something makes people feel helpful therefore they are more willing to complete the survey. "Welcome to the CREEQ Crew!" acts a little like persuasion.

    21. To participate you must be 18 years or older. You will be asked to verify this information on the survey.

This is stated for legality issues. Youth are considered a vulnerable group during studies and therefore need extra credentials when surveying with them. Stating that the participant should be 18 and that this information will be checked, allows age-appropriate participants to participate and non-age-appropriate participants to understand that this survey is not for them. (mostly likely because minors need parent consent and might not be the most knowledgeable on this topic)

    22. Your participation in this study is highly valuable, as your opinion of water quality andrecreational use is an important foundation for care of NY waterways. By participating you willbe part of a large network of volunteers, whose work can improve water quality monitoringefforts and mitigation responses. By simply having a better understanding of the waterconditions in streams across the state, the NYSDEC can better predict and manage potentialwater quality issues for connecting bodies of water and watersheds as a whole

It helps persuade the participant to take the survey by making their insight or information seem important and necessary. "making the audience feel wanted or helpful" The states the overall goal of what they hope to accomplish with the surveys. It makes the participant also feel a part of something and that are also helping make a change. Builds a good relationship with participants and sets a good precedent therefore in the future they will participate in more studies.

    23. , pronounced “creek” stands for “Citizen Recreational Evaluation of EnvironmentalQuality”. As this name suggests, this initiative asks waterway users, like you, to perform a visualevaluation of water quality and recreational usability of stream through a guided survey. Thepurpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using an online survey to obtain waterquality monitoring reports and by volunteer citizen scientists across Central New York State.During this study period, a team from ESF will follow-up on survey responses by collecting watersamples from the locations where they were submitted. These samples will be analyzed forwater quality-indicating parameters and will be compared to survey responses. The DEC aims touse these reports to inform water quality monitoring efforts beyond the DOW’s routinemonitoring network of rivers and streams.

This section is to explain to the reader what the survey is for, how it will be done, and what will happen when the results are conducted. This section is provided therefore the reader knows what the survey entails and why their information is needed. It helps to educate the reader but also builds a relationship with the reader of trust by keeping the reader involved and informed of the project. It also helps to persuade the reader to take the survey, or see it as less dangerous since it is showing the reader why they are conducting the survey.

    24. Thissurvey is part of a project conducted by the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry(ESF) in collaboration with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s(DEC) Division of Water (DOW

Informs readers on who is conducting the survey. It is important to inform the reader on everyone contributing to the study therefore there is no surprise on where the results are going.

    1. Thank you for taking interest in the CREEQ Citizen Science Initiative and research project.

First start by showing appreciation for participant because all surveys are volunteer based. Want to start with a warm feeling and show gratefulness because they are taking time to complete this. Also sets a good relationship between reader.
