    1. The portion of some is to have their afflictions by drops, now one drop and then another; but the dregs of the cup, the wine of astonishment, like a sweeping rain that leaveth no food, did the Lord prepare to be my portion.

thats really interesting! she sees life as a balance of happiness and afflictions (good and bad), if you don't get the bad in little pieces here and there in your life you're gonna get it in one big chunk sometime in your life.

    2. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every Son whom he receiveth”

she is a sinner like everyone else on earth, so in order for god to forgive her sins he has to put her though misery and pain and test her true faith, and she wanted that and got that, its messed up thinking

    3. Before I knew what affliction meant, I was ready sometimes to wish for it

When we have everything you could ask for, everything is "perfect" some want a little conflict a little bad to oppose to the good so that they can truly appreciate the good knowing the bad, perfection leads to boredom because when there is no drama or when there is only happiness and fun that can get tiring after a while, some people are drama seekers such as those on facebook, they need a little (or a lot) distraction from life

    4. love

"love" a word used to describe the actions of the people of Boston that welcomed her and her husband into their homes, but to describe the native americans who did the same thing just kind, because the the english were christians and because they shared her religion they automatically get a higher tier up in regards

    1. a pancake, about as big as two fingers

that's a small pancake, I'm used to making pancakes bigger than a person's face, this narrative really makes you realize what you have is actually over the top rather than "not enough" like man americans believe

    2. It seems to be a bait the devil lays to make men lose their precious time.

Addiction to an object or action that isn't for the good of the soul and body is that of the devil, addiction in general is bad because too much is a bad thing, it's interesting how she reasons that smoking tobacco is a bad thing

    1. they set their wigwams on fire, and away they went

the native americans set fire to their own wigwams and then moved on? what is the purpose behind doing this?

    1. I was glad of it

When you have nothing, passion (a distraction from the negative emotions and conditions) is a good things to have; something to believe in to obsess over, something that gives you purpose, like revenge when your loved one dies and all you feel is pain you live through the purpose of avenging them (maybe not the best distraction but one nonetheless)

    2. I went to see my daughter Mary, who was at this same Indian town, at a wigwam not very far off, though we had little liberty or opportunity to see one another.

I wish I could see more of what the customs were like with whites living in an Indian village and being prisoners, their culture seems fascinating to me, but there isn't much on this information besides these captivity narratives... is there?

    3. that it was easy for me to see how righteous it was with God to cut off the thread of my life and cast me out of His presence forever.

Even when you are suffering and dying you must take time to pray. This passage reminds me of Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, God can "cutt off the thread of my life" just as he can drop you into the flames of Hell.

    1. Oh, I may see the wonderful power of God, that my Spirit did not utterly sink under my affliction: still the Lord upheld me with His gracious and merciful spirit, and we were both alive to see the light of the next morning.

When you have nothing left or you might die call upon the Lord to help you. Why is it when you are in a situation where you have lost everything or youre suffering or about to die, you look to God for help, but other times when you have plenty and you are happy and healthy you dont pray or put your faith in God as much?

    1. your country

Interesting how he says "your" country when he just got done saying how it was Spain's (or did he mean the country from where they came from that is not the one they are in at the moment?)

    2. belief

I think its interesting that he is trying to convince a bunch of non-english speaking natives of this using proof from the Bible which they probably don't believe in... every culture has different religious beliefs, but Spain believes that they are the big shots that their religion is the one and only and everyone else regardless of their beliefs are going to listen because of their God (it all comes down to power in the end, and not that of religion, that of militia)

    3. St. Peter

why don't I remember any of this being suggested in the Bible? Does he mean the old testament? maybe they interpreted the Bible really strangely...

    4. n the five thousand years since the world was created, it was necessary that some men should go one way and some another, and that they should be divided into many kingdoms and provinces, for in one alone they could not be sustained.

Where in the Bible does it offer this idea?

    1. At the Havanna I lived with the Governor in the Castle

Where is the Havanna and what is the Castle (capital C)?

    2. I immediately jump’d overboard, chusing rather to be drowned, than to be kill’d by those barbarous and inhuman Savages

First off, he's smart, secondly, i find it interesting that he calls native americans barbarous and inhuman savages just as white people think of NA as such, look at that they can be united by this hatred towards the NA, just like friends bond over their passions of something

    3. our sad Condition

What was this sad condition? Ship problems, sickness, or poverty? ...

    4. May

I thought the dates weren't matching up but then realized that he spent a long time at the Bay, I wonder why he didn't talk about his time sailing or in Jamaica or the Bay?

    1. he spied the head of Faith, with the pink ribbons, gazing anxiously forth, and bursting into such joy at sight of him, that she skipt along the street, and almost kissed her husband before the whole village. But Goodman Brown looked sternly and sadly into her face, and passed on without a greeting

why do his stories always have heartbreak, it makes me sad :(

    2. all through the haunted forest, there could be nothing more frightful than the figure of Goodman Brown. On he flew, among the black pines, brandishing his staff with frenzied gestures

he has become the devil himself!!

i think its ironic how his wife is named Faith (symbolizing faith in God) and he is following the devil into the forest towards an evil act away from Faith, and then the devil gives him his staff (symbolizing sin) he contemplates whether to use the staff (commit sin) and when he does use the staff he looks ad acts like the devil , laughing and screaming glide a mad man and running through a dark forest not fearing anything becoming the the feared one in turn

    6. catechism

a way of teaching that requires memorization and punishment, introduced by John Calvin, calvinists and puritans

    7. But the only thing about him, that could be fixed upon as remarkable, was his staff, which bore the likeness of a great black snake, so curiously wrought, that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself like a living serpent.

is this a symbol of the devil? his adventure is “evil” and he talks about a devil following him and now theres this guy with serpent staff…

    8. she’s a blessed angel on earth; and after this one night, I’ll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven.

his imagery is amusing, do you think someone could really get to heaven after sinning by clinging to the “good” and devoting himself to her?

    1. In early life he had accidentally killed a beloved friend; and from that day till the hour of his own death, he hid his face from men

maybe he killed that woman whose funeral he went to earlier… thats ridiculous that the police couldn't even come to ask him whats going on and have him take the veil off because its scaring the towns people why did he put the veil on in the first place???

    2. the corpse had slightly shuddered

      It’s alive!!! …. ??

    3. Could Mr. Hooper be fearful of her glance, that he so hastily caught back the black veil?

he doesn't want the dead woman to see his face, why? because perhaps he is not saddened by her death? why else would he not want her to see his face? why would he wear a black veil for her? who is she? a loved one; wife daughter?

    4. Strange and bewildered looks repaid him for his courtesy.

this is a good representation of how an idea from a sense leads to emotion, that leads to reaction that leads to action. the people begin to react differently to him just because of the veil, and then they act differently, not wanting to walk with him, a perfectly desired thing to do without the presence of the veil, the veil has so much power in this story, it’s crazy…

    5. At the close of the services, the people hurried out with indecorous confusion, eager to communicate their pent-up amazement, and conscious of lighter spirits the moment they lost sight of the black veil.

imagine if one day the professor decided to come to class wearing a black veil or mask on their face and wouldn't allow questions and acted like nothing was wrong, how strange and creepy that would be, its fascinating how just one black veil can open up a new realm of fear and confusion and discomfort to the point where people want to escape and do so hurrying when they get the chance, as if they feel trapped by this…

    6. Yet perhaps the pale-faced congregation was almost as fearful a sight to the minister, as his black veil to them.

great, now the hullabaloo around the mask has permeated to the rest of the church and people… it has created a whole new entity of fear that lives and breaths on its own…

    7. Such was the effect of this simple piece of crape, that more than one woman of delicate nerves was forced to leave the meeting-house.

certainly, the face behind this ghastly, scary mask cannot be worse than the mask? can it? (intrigue: we wanna know!!)

    8. Did he seek to hide it from the dread Being whom he was addressing?

if he wanted to hide his face from God, it must be something evil, unholy…

    9. That mysterious emblem was never once withdrawn.

its like what do you got to hide, man?

    10. “He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his f

a man without a face is unrecognizable to others, a man without a face is no man, as humans we try to see human form and faces in those not human, when we see something that resembles us we show a liking to it, but when we don't see something that resembles us its foreign, and we don't understand, its scary/unknown, it isn't human…

    1. It will be found, in fact, that the ingenious are always fanciful, and the truly imaginative never otherwise than analytic.

smart people are fanciful, and the imaginative people can analyze, so is he saying that it doesn't matter whether your smart or dumb as long as you have imagination you can analyze. It’s funny how writers from the history have such a long and wordy process of telling the reader what he means, while we can just explain it using a sentence or two…

    2. The analytical power should not be confounded with ample ingenuity

just because you're smart doesn’t mean you're naturally great at analyzing things

    3. recherché

      what does this mean?

    1. When I had finished, I felt satisfied that all was right.

i think the fact that we don't see enough into his emotions in this scene makes it that more sickening and gruesome, and then the one emotion we get after this scene is “satisfaction”???? this characterization hits home in the creepy department, and then the fact that he states that “all is right” shows that he’s even more messed up, because no, everything is wrong!!

    2. I thought of cutting the corpse into minute fragments, and destroying them by fire. At another, I resolved to dig a grave for it

    3. I started, hourly, from dreams of unutterable fear, to find the hot breath of the thing upon my face

i have had this happen to me before, its pretty scary even without the fear and hatred rising with you, just imagine being woken up every hour with a cat just sitting on you and staring at you when you open your eyes, or following you around and constantly getting under your feet, i mean that would annoy me too

    4. And then came, as if to my final and irrevocable overthrow, the spirit of PERVERSENESS. Of this spirit philosophy takes no account

acting upon “the strange,” the thoughts one has that are immoral or unacceptable in society, he actually acts upon these thoughts and impulses and the reality of his actions are too much for him to bare so the spirt of perverseness overcomes him, he feels as if he is meant to be “strange” because his sick fantasies have become reality so therefor that part of him is real, philosophy, with reason, hasn’t tried to explain this. he’s basically saying “if I've already started down this path i might as well follow it to the end”

    5. was happy to find in my wife a disposition not uncongenial with my own

an interesting way to talk about someone you love, characterization!

i feel like an author with great writing (and im not saying that she doesn't have have great writing, because she does) shouldnt need to insert small lessons here and there throughout the story, we would be able to gather the lesson through reading the story

    2. Earl of D——

      Earl of "D" hmm...?

    3. “Art, Sir!” cried Temple eagerly. “Lucy Eldridge is as free from art as she is from every other error: she is—” “Everything that is amiable and lovely,” said his father, interrupting him ironically:

Mr. Temple is all about being good, helping those in need because it would make them happy, and he gains happiness in the happiness of others, such a peaceful man, but his father is like "no youre not a good man, you just want the goods, don't lie" let's see what happens...

    4. made completely wretched by marrying a disagreeable woman

women are "supposed" to be agreeable and if they disagree on something with a man and they are actually right, the man is always right (how ironic that now the saying goes "women are always right") if the women continues to disagree with the man and becomes hard to manage the man looks bad for not being able to control his wife

    5. pleasure grounds

      huh..

    6. Charlotte had made too great an impression on his mind to be easily eradicated

Is he suggesting the theory of Pangea here..?

    3. their woman stronger than ours

showing the two extremes of cultures, today we would admire this, back then the colonials thought it a weak quality, considered the indians weak, therefor this created more of a motive/incentive to start wars with them, because they didn't understand them

    1. “THERE SHALL BE NO LAWS BUT SUCH AS I LIKE.”

Pain has got all the effective aspects of persuasion in this piece, no wonder the colonists revolted... (repetition)

    2. we should be at peace with France and Spain were they at war with Britain

why should we be enemies with your enemies when wer'e all the way over here not causing trouble, we don't want the war coming over to this country because your having problems, deal with them yourself, you get what you give, treat other the way you want to be treated

    3. But she has protected us, say some. That she has engrossed us is true, and defended the continent at our expense as well as her own is admitted

persuasion works best when you give both sides of the argument/controversy and still prove that its best your way; Yes Britain protected us and that was good but they wouldve done that for anyone with the right motivation, we are nothing special to them, its not true loyalty

    4. the first twenty years of our lives is to become a precedent for the next twenty.

Ugh, do they actually believe that God has emotions, that would make him more human-like, maybe they believe that because He made humans in His own image, so therefor He must be like us in someway besides just looks...

It's because there are more sinners in the world, that makes God more angry and makes more people suffer and send them to Hell.

    4. from thence he is

every unconverted man is from Hell? so basically it's saying that everyone is born evil, until they are converted to Christianity

(but what about babies who are born into Christianity?)

    5. he can most easily do it.

    2. but the eye of sovereign grace

Redemption is key to happiness, said Edwards.

    3. “Infinite upon infinite … Infinite upon infinite!”

this is a way to express what his sins appeared to be to him... what does this mean though? "infinite upon infinite" is he saying that his sins are countless, there is are too many to fathom? one sins everyday and there are so many and they haven't repented their sins... so they are building up inside you. Like Edwards said before, how he has a greater sense of the badness in his heart. Maybe this is what he meant when he said his heart is an "abyss infinitely deeper than hell"

    4. I have had a vastly greater sense of my own wickedness, and the badness of my heart, than ever I had before my conversion.

    1. It continued very bad for some dayes; and several times since, she has had a great pain in her breast; and been so siezed on her leggs, that she has hardly been able to go.

I feel that all the constrictions that the religious lifestyle puts on Puritans has finally led them to burst into insanity. Everything in moderation you crazy Puritans. Their belief that sickness and ill-fortune is caused by not pleasing God and following his Word has become overwhelming in the community. They believe that every little thing that happens is either Satan or God's doing.

    2. several of her own Children had frankly and fully confessed, not only that they were Witches themselves, but that this their Mother had made them so. This Confession they made with great Shews of Repentance, and with much Demonstration of Truth. They related Place, Time, Occasion; they gave an account of Journeys, Meetings and Mischiefs by them performed, and were very credible in what they said.

How much influence did community, dignity, and life have over them? Apparently a lot for children to sentence their own mother to death to save themselves. The values that these puritans are teaching the youth, so sad...

    3. Carrier, she replyed, Its no matter though their Necks had been twisted quite off.

I would be angry too! The extremitites that puritans will go to to kill their fellow neighbor, doesnt seem very puritan at all, maybe they were all possessed by the devil, everything is backwards!
