1. issue or concern

This is implying that written or email communication is for what might be considered negative communication. This form of communication could also be used to share a positive note or developmental milestone/growth as well.

    1. Introduction

The title uses the words respectful and reciprocal; to very important words. Possibly adding a bit in the introduction connecting those words with what is already there...they are not really used until the conclusion.
Yes the chapter is all about respectful and reciprocal relationships, but is that a clear connection for new learners?

    2. Paren

Wonder about using parent, this is saying the parent is the one the teacher is gathering information from and it may be a different adult. This could be titled Interviews.

    1. listening skills

Another listening strategy is reflective listening. "Reflective listening ensures for the accuracy of communication by reflecting back to the speaker what the listener has heard. Reflective listening includes not only restating, but also validating, the concerns or feelings of another person." (p. 154) Fields, M. V., Meritt, P. A., & Fields, D. M. (2018). Constructive guidance and discipline: Birth to age eight (7th ed.). Pearson.

    1. Reflect

Thought on a reflection activity and/or a resource to add. Thinking about reflecting on biases, stereotypes and discrimination; I engage in a practice with my students connected to mindfulness. Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as the awareness that arises by paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.
Having an awareness and not judging ourselves based on this awareness is important to move forward and learn. This chapter does a great job explaining why there may be differences and it seems that is connected. I provide a scenario for students to observe, documenting those observations and have a conversation about what they noticed. In the reflection process, I also share Elena Aguilar's definition of equitable education - Every student receives what he/she/they need to develop his/her/their full academic and social potential and thrive everyday. Thriving means they feel loved and cared for and feel like they belong to a community. Emotions and academics are equal. We live in a paradox, we are wired to be connected to others, we are wired to sort people into different categories, cling to our own groups and fear what is different; fear makes it difficult to see the complex humanity of others - we have a desire, but we have a fear. Reflection question - Where is your awareness coming from and what are you doing with that information? As an educator it is important to make intentional connections with all students, continually become aware and take ownership and build a foundation of equitable literacy. Foundation of Equity Literacy - Ability to recognize biases and inequities Ability to respond to biases and inequities in the immediate Ability to redress biases and inequities in the long Ability to create and sustain a bias free and equitable learning environment Resource - Gorski, P., & Pothini, S. G. (2018). Case studies on diversity and social justice education.
