    1. it, he built a strong relationship with his daughter — noticing not just her grades but also accepting her as someone with full potential. So when Linet was accepted in one of the top national high schools after eighth grade, Momposhi was bursting with pride and went around the village telling everyone how proud and how smart his daughter was.

I find it amazing that the education of women has not just benefits for women but the entire community. Education builds stronger relationships, with this achievement Linet's dad finally realized the potential in his daughter. Linet's father was able to see that women can strive at anything men can and with that comes progress. If more and more people realize the potential in women than the world will be a much better place. The education of women provides a richer community full of intelligence and innovation.

    2. Girls were still going through FGM, still leaving school, still getting married to men older than their fathers and still having children when they’re teenagers. I did not want to see any more girls go through that. That’s when I knew what I needed to do to give back to my community.

This section made me a bit emotional, the fact that women are going through genital manipulation makes my stomach turn. This should never be normalized, these actions cause trauma and abuse in girls who are so young. Women deserve to make their own choices. I feel great sadness for the girls who have to marry at such a young age to someone they don't even know. In order to have a marriage and children a woman must be ready and prepared these girls are expected to raise children when they are still children themselves.

    3. To empower girls, you need to educate them. That was my dream. And so I built a school, and in the process, I learned something much bigger. When you empower a girl, you transform a community. School is just a start.

I also believe that education is the first step to empower women. Education allows people to understand their full potential and widens the range of opportunities. In her village women went through female genital mutilation and are married at very young ages. These actions take away girl's childhoods and choices in life, with education women get knowledge and with knowledge comes confidence and involvement. Education is the first step to empowerment and equality, the young girls were also provided a safe place with food and water. These are the next steps in empowering a woman, in order for someone to grow they must feel safe and energized.

    1. This is the result of my hobby, which is unofficial bin inspections. (Laughter) Strange you might think, but if we could rely on corporations to tell us what they were doing in the back of their stores, we wouldn’t need to go sneaking around the back, opening up bins and having a look at what’s inside.

I don't blame him for inspecting the grocery waste because big corporations tend to hide a lot from the public eye. Corporations try to appear consumer friendly and declare their love for nutritional value while many continue to particapate in extreme animal cruelty and food waste. Big corporations basically design the American diet, these rich infrastructures decide what majority of the public consumes. A few years ago in school I watched a documentary about food corporations and from a grocery standpoint corporations make it seem like we have plenty of options regarding food but majority of the food we consume are run by the same major companies like nestle and coca cola.

    2. But what we have to recognize now is that we are reaching the ecological limits that our planet can bear, and when we chop down forests, as we are every day, to grow more and more food, when we extract water from depleting water reserves, when we emit fossil fuel emissions in the quest to grow more and more food, and then we throw away so much of it, we have to think about what we can start saving

I often think about this, the ecological limits of our planet. We have grown so much adapted new technology and business but with that comes its defects. As a society, more as a country really resources have been taken advantage of. Food is sold to make the most money possible rather than thought of how it values the consumer. Everything is viewed from an infrastructure standpoint and we don't often think about how food is produced. We see extremely accessible items yet the production of these items causes extreme damage to our planet. Forests are continued to be chopped down for unnecessary benefit, while enough food already exists. Eventually we'll reach a point where we'll have nothing to take from if we don’t change dramatically.

    3. So a country like America has twice as much food on its shop shelves and in its restaurants than is actually required to feed the American people.

I find this discouraging and unsurprising. We have so many people without access to food yet an abundance of food. There is an easy solution to our issues but a continuation of waste. America has plenty of food and a food insecurity problem. 42 million people in America may experience food insecurity - source from feeding America. It sounds like the problem here is distribution or lack of effort. Food is often tossed away because it doesn't appeal to the eye or is seen unconventional. The appearance of food determines its usefulness yet it could be of nutritional value? It is hard to find the logic in this explanation. The competition of food suppliers is extremely high so many different options are presented to the public so a plumper tomato may catch the eye better than one that is smaller which leads farmers to sell only the best of the crop.

    1. What if every country in the world chose to be like Costa Rica in prioritizing human well-being, using its wealth for the well-being of its citizens?

I think this would be extremely beneficial to our society. It makes sense to use wealth for the well-being of citizens, but this isn't always the case. Government officials are too proud to focus on basic needs. If we were to focus on education, shelter, and food for everyone there would be great prosperity. If more people receive education that will provide more innovation, we need to build the foundation rather than moving up while others are suffering.

    2. underperforming on social progress, relative to their wealth. Russia has lots of natural resource wealth, but lots of social problems. China has boomed economically, but hasn’t made much headway on human rights or environmental issues. India has a space program and millions of people without toilets. Now, on the other hand, we have countries that are over-performing on social progress relative to their GDP. Costa Rica has prioritized education, health and environmental sustainability, and as a result, it’s achieving a very high level of social progress, despite only having a rather modest GDP. And Costa Rica’s not alone. From poor countries like Rwanda to richer countries like New Zealand, we see that it’s possible to get lots of social progress, even if your GDP is not so great.

It is very hard to measure the success of a country and this quote proves such. There are countries that seem to do well economically but have a huge divide in social class, there are countries where there is little divide among social class but also little freedom. I think that a good balance among these factors measures success. I think we are spending money in ways that may make us look good but cause harm to the public, a country may appear to be wonderful to an elitist which causes them to make misinformed decisions.

    3. Did we hit this target? Well, no, we didn’t. We exceeded it. This year, global poverty is going to fall to 12 percent

I'm surprised I wasn't aware of this dramatic decrease, from 36% to 12% is a big deal. I feel like I wasn't aware of the decrease because it didn't affect me personally and it wasn't covered much in the media. The media often raises awareness to negative data /events because in order to change that ,there has to be coverage. We often don't notice things that run smoothly because we expect such. I think that the media has disrupted our perspective on life. If a person views nothing but negative events then they are going to experience negative emotions/expectations.

    1. We, therefore, pledge to do all that we can, knowing we’ll fail on occasion, to restore compassion to the center of our lives (at least in this course and during this semester) and attempt to engage with our colleagues in this course with compassion. This means we will work to think first of others, their benefit, their well-being, and their learning, knowing that others are compassionately working for our benefit. We will strive to see our interdependence and interconnectedness, and labor for one another.

I like the idea of being connected yet independent this semester because it fits in with our current situation. I believe that if we keep this intention in mind everyone would benefit. The theme of compassion is powerful yet simple. A compassionate act can change the life of someone else while taking little energy from the giving party. In this class, we should think of possible outcomes before writing or saying something. I don’t think this will be a hard task for our class.

    2. The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical, and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the center of our world and put another there, and to honor the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity, and respect.

Compassion is rooted in religion, the ability to see from another perspective and charter to their needs. Religion teaches to avoid the judgment of others as well as malicious acts. However, religion in some cases can serve as a cloak or excuse for mistreatment. The excuse of religious intention can cause great harm and great charity. Subsequently, the two differ based on how it is taught to teach with encouragement and love, a place without judgment or others' actions in mind or to teach with strict rules and punishment. One causes fear and avoidance while the other causes acceptance. The teachings of our religious leaders cause action and have a huge impact on society. We need to identify the reason for our religion rather than criticize those who don't follow.

    3. It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We in this class acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately to some degree.

I agree with this statement, if we were to live in a society where we took others perspectives into account the world would be without hate.We have failed to act compassionately towards others and to change that we need to think selflessly rather than selfishly. This statement to me appears pretty simple, treat others with basic decency. But in order to fix this issue we need to find out where hate stems from, could it be anger, a bad childhood, neglect, jealousy, i´m not sure however I don't think we will find one common answer.
