This quote stood out to me because I think that it gives a good example on how to understand the difference between evidence and claims and how they correlate when you are writing an essay. The author used a real world situation where you can apply this concept to, which from my perspective was very insightful and overall helpful. Thinking back to the previous essays that I have written, I know there are many times where I just add evidence, without properly explaining how I got there. By using evidence to explain a claim then also explaining how that evidence led to that said claim will clear up any confusion or other questions someone might have while reading an essay. I think that using this concept would make my essays flow more efficiently and overall make me a better writer.

In general I struggle to write essays for many reasons, however one of the main reason is that I don't know where to start and it usually takes me a while to figure out where I do want to start and how I want my essay to structured. Before I can even start writing I always have to make sure that I know exactly what I am writing about in each paragraph and throughout the essay. I feel like writing multiple free writes with all my ideas will be a better way to efficiently get my essays done without taking more time than needed.

    1. The fact that these women were collectively forgotten is also related to the mis-representation of critical organizations with which they were actively involved. As the dominant institution in the early development of American sociology, the University of Chicago’s influence has extended over the organization and location itself.

This passage I think really puts things into perspective from my point of view to how little women are represented when learning about the history of sociology as a social science. Looking back on who I learned about in my contemporary and classical theory class last semester, I realize that most of the sociologists that we had discussed and learned about were male. Although there were some female sociologist that were discussed but we didn’t start learning about them until we got to postmodernism and queer theory, which were one of the last chapters of our text book. I specifically remember learning about the University of Chicago and the importance it had on the development of sociology. However, I do not remember learning about any female sociologists that were involved with the school. It is very surprising to me to read this article and find out that there were female sociologists that were actively involved and affiliated with the institution.

In this passage I found this example of social life as theater very interesting and well said. The way we participate in social life is based on the action of our behavior and how we use it to interact with each other. Although our actions may differ based on the social system that we are in or the people we are interacting with, the way an individual acts still represents who they are as a person because they are choosing to act that way on their own. They are choosing to act that way because that's how they want other people to view them as. However, I do think that this concept can also be a little confusing to people. This is because in specific environments where individuals are pretending to act in a certain way because of different circumstances, may argue against that concept and say that they had a reason to act like that. Whether it was to get out of that situation or because they were uncomfortable or simply because they wanted to fit in. Ultimately, I think that it is still associated with who you are as a person.

I thought the thought processes of induction and deduction were interesting for me and a very helpful tool I could use in my writing. I think that for my self I struggle with gathering too much evidence and spending too much time seeing if I can use it in my writing. I think that these thought processes would steer my writing in a better direction, one that is overall more efficient.

    1. As some like Afsaneh Naj-mabadi are now arguing, not only is it wrong to see his-tory simplistically in terms of a putative opposition be-tween Islam and the West (as is happening in the UnitedStates now and has happened in parallel in the Muslimworld), but it is also strategically dangerous to accept thiscultural opposition between Islam and the West, betweenfundamentalism and feminism, because those many peo-ple within Muslim countries who are trying to find alter-natives to present injustices, those who might want to re-fuse the divide and take from different histories andcultures, who do not accept that being feminist means be-ing Western, will be under pressure to choose, just as weare:

This passage stood out to be because I think that it is important that she is challenging the view of muslim women in islam. She says that feminism shoudn’t only be seen a western concept. Muslim women shouldn’t have to choose bewteen there gender or there culture. She comments on how the west has normalized women being a victim of oppression by men and that being the only factor. Abu-Lughod’s point is that there needs to be awareness of differences in cultures and recognition of non western women for who they really are. For many women in these countries, religious values are equally important to feminist values, so they have to find a balance between the two that is allowed in their own cultures. Western feminism needs to respect and accept how these women want to achieve social change to better their lives.
